A Multi-Wavelength Determination Of The Total Luminosity And Star Formation Rate Of The Milky Way, Joshua L. Mascoop
A Multi-Wavelength Determination Of The Total Luminosity And Star Formation Rate Of The Milky Way, Joshua L. Mascoop
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The star formation rate (SFR) of the Milky Way is poorly understood in comparison to the SFR of other galaxies. In order to better find the Galaxy's place in the universe, it is imperative to understand the star formation activity occurring within it. We characterize the Galactic \hii\ region luminosity function (LF) at multiple infrared and radio wavelengths using a sample of 797 first Galactic quadrant \hii regions compiled from the WISE Catalog of Galactic \hii Regions. This sample is statistically complete for all regions powered by single stars of type O9.5V and earlier.
We find that neither a single …

Quantum Logic Control And Precision Measurements Of Molecular Ions In A Ring Trap: An Approach For Testing Fundamental Symmetries, Yan Zhou, Joshua O. Island, Matt Grau
Physics Faculty Publications
This paper presents an experimental platform designed to facilitate quantum logic control of polar molecular ions in a segmented ring ion trap, paving the way for precision measurements. This approach focuses on achieving near-unity state preparation and detection, as well as long spin-precession coherence. A distinctive aspect lies in separating state preparation and detection conducted in a static frame from parity-selective spin precession in a rotating frame. Moreover, the method is designed to support spatially and temporally coincident measurements on multiple ions prepared in states with different sensitivity to the new physics of interest. This provides powerful techniques to probe …

Generative artificial intelligence is a fast-growing area of research offering various avenues for exploration in high-energy nuclear physics. In this work, we explore the use of generative models for simulating electron-proton collisions relevant to experiments like the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility and the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). These experiments play a critical role in advancing our understanding of nucleons and nuclei in terms of quark and gluon degrees of freedom. The use of generative models for simulating collider events faces several challenges such as the sparsity of the data, the presence of global or eventwide constraints, and steeply falling …

The 1S hyperfine splitting in hydrogen is measured to an impressive ppt precision and will soon be measured to ppm precision in muonic hydrogen. The latter measurement will rely on theoretical predictions, which are limited by knowledge of the proton polarizability effect Δpol. Data-driven evaluations of Δpol have long been in significant tension with baryon chiral perturbation theory. Here we present improved results for Δpol driven by new spin structure data, reducing the long-standing tension between theory and experiment and halving the dominating uncertainty in hyperfine splitting calculations.

GaAs photocathodes in dc high-voltage photoguns are highly susceptible to ion back-bombardment, which reduces the photocathode quantum efficiency and limits the useful operating lifetime for producing polarized electron beams. This paper demonstrates that applying a small positive bias to the photogun anode can significantly suppress ion back-bombardment and increase charge lifetime. This technique was studied extensively using the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility photogun, where highly polarized electron beams created using a strained-superlattice GaAs/GaAsP photocathode were used and charge lifetimes improved by almost a factor of 2. A new simulation code ionator was developed to model ion production and tracking …

We provide an overview of the status of Monte-Carlo event generators for high-energy particle physics. Guided by the experimental needs and requirements, we highlight areas of active development, and opportunities for future improvements. Particular emphasis is given to physics models and algorithms that are employed across a variety of experiments. These common themes in event generator development lead to a more comprehensive understanding of physics at the highest energies and intensities, and allow models to be tested against a wealth of data that have been accumulated over the past decades. A cohesive approach to event generator development will allow these …

Tightening Qc Relaxations Of Ac Optimal Power Flow Through Improved Linear Convex Envelopes, Mohammad Rasoul Narimani, Daniel K. Molzahn, Katherine R. Davis, Mariesa L. Crow
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
AC optimal power flow (AC OPF) is a fundamental problem in power system operations. Accurately modeling the network physics via the AC power flow equations makes AC OPF a challenging nonconvex problem. To search for global optima, recent research has developed various convex relaxations that bound the optimal objective values of AC OPF problems. The QC relaxation convexifies the AC OPF problem by enclosing the non-convex terms within convex envelopes. The QC relaxation's accuracy strongly depends on the tightness of these envelopes. This paper proposes two improvements for tightening QC relaxations of OPF problems. We first consider a particular nonlinear …

Abstract
Abstract
Are there differences and similarities between the computer technology of today and yesterdays. Research had shown that there had been tremendous improvements from the computers of ages (traditional Computers) as we enter the 21st century. Both the physicality and the functionalities of computers have changed but some remain the same. The memory capacity and functions have changed, but all are still based on the old concepts of yesteryears.

Thermocatalytic Plasma-Assisted Dry Reforming Of Methane Over Ni/Al2o3 Catalyst, Tyler Wong
Thermocatalytic Plasma-Assisted Dry Reforming Of Methane Over Ni/Al2o3 Catalyst, Tyler Wong
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Plasma catalysis is an advantageous approach that combines the effects of plasma with the enhancements of a catalyst. By utilizing a nickel catalyst in the plasma discharge zone of a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD), it can give an enhancement to the electrical field, boost microdischarges, and increase conversion and selectivity rates of CH4 and CO2 in the dry reforming of methane (DRM) reaction.
Industrial application of nickel catalysts in DBD Plasma DRM process are limited by poor stability, which is caused by the sintering of active metal particles and coke deposition on the catalyst surface. In this work, …

Physics VIII 1 presents a multi-stage argument concluding that there was not, nor ever will be, a time when there was not nor will not be motion (Phys. VIII 1.252b5-6). In this paper I shall argue that chapter’s argument is dialectical in a precise way. My claim will be that Physics VIII 1 is apodeictically conditioned – its structure must be understood in terms of the theory of science in the Posterior Analytics and the methods for establishing principles in the Topics. Physics VIII 1 is not demonstrative in a straightforward deductive way, but is structured with …

Analysis Of The Crab Nebula And Pulsar, Alexander Bittle, Ian Kuhl, Jingze (Justin) Zhou, Avery Archer
Annual Student Research Poster Session
Although the Crab Nebula is well understood, the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) still regularly observes the Crab's highest energy emissions. These emissions are used to calibrate the telescopes, further, document the system, and investigate the validity of physical models. Our research this summer is geared to analyze data from 2018-2022 to add to an ongoing research project investigating the long term variability of the Crab Nebula’s emission.

\textit{Dark matter} is the name that we give to the 85\% of matter in the universe that interacts via gravity but negligibly with any of the other known forces. One compelling model for dark matter is the \textit{axion}, as it simultaneously solves the existence of dark matter and the strong CP problem in QCD. Axions can interact with a strong magnetic field through the \textit{Primakoff effect}, wherein the axion can spontaneously convert into a photon in the presence of a strong magnetic field. The traditional experiment used for this purpose is called a \textit{haloscope}, which consists of the aforementioned strong …
Nuclear Spectroscopy Of Heavy Nuclei In The Shell Model Monte Carlo Method, Sohan Vartak
Nuclear Spectroscopy Of Heavy Nuclei In The Shell Model Monte Carlo Method, Sohan Vartak
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
As a strongly interacting finite-size quantum many-body system, the atomic nucleus provides a captivating arena for studying a multitude of phenomena. This thesis explores applications of the shell model Monte Carlo (SMMC) method, a powerful approach to investigate heavy nuclei ($A \sim 150$), where direct diagonalization is infeasible due to the rapid growth of the model space. The SMMC enables the use of standard Monte Carlo techniques to calculate ground state, statistical, and collective properties of nuclei. In this work, we refine a recently developed method for estimating low-lying excitation energies. This method is based on the imaginary time correlation …

Acoustic reflections from a lakebed provide valuable information about the dynamic boundary between water and the lakebed, where sediments and biota in the water column eventually settle. In this study, we present a comprehensive analysis of reflected sound wave amplitudes to gain insights into the physical properties of a water-sediment boundary. We decided to carry out this analysis within the unique ecosystem of the Mono Lake basin due to the fact that the Mono Lake, a meromictic and hypersaline waterbody is situated within one of the most active yet understudied volcanic regions in the United States. The fact that the …
