How We Stopped Charging Students To Submit Etds: Case Study Of A Five-Year Odyssey, Gregory Wiedeman, Emily Kilcer
Journal of Graduate Librarianship
In 2019, the Graduate School at the University at Albany, State University of New York wrote to the University Libraries about the processing of archival copies of electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs), hoping to reduce or eliminate deposit fees for authors. Interested library faculty and staff self-assembled into a project team and found that the university’s switch in 2008 to a born-digital submission workflow provided by an external vendor was deeply flawed as a service, and unnecessarily costly to student authors. Later, in 2013, the Libraries established an open access institutional repository (IR), which had the potential to support a …
Using Institutional Habitus To Position Colleges And Universities As Social Actors, Derria Byrd
Using Institutional Habitus To Position Colleges And Universities As Social Actors, Derria Byrd
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
In this article, derria byrd contends that more robust interrogation of the organizational contribution to inequity in higher education would be aided by understanding higher education organizations as social actors. Organizational social actor theory demonstrates that colleges and universities are more than inert contexts in which marginalized students' experiences and outcomes play out. They are entities that possess unique dispositional orientations, motives, and inclinations toward action. This conceptual article argues that engagement with institutional habitus, grounded in Pierre Bourdieu's theory of practice, situates colleges and universities as social actors whose structural positions generate interests, beliefs, and behaviors that tend …

Journal of Fundamental & Applied Business Research
Factors such as organizational culture, unplanned change, and financial instability can negatively affect organizations’ bottom line and competitiveness. Also, it is important to understand how these factors affect non-profit organizations since they are usually relied upon to perform critical roles during periods of crises. The recent COVID-19 pandemic represented an important shock for most non-profit organizations in the Unites States. As non-profit organizations change to accommodate these new realities, it is important …

Organizational Cultural Entrenchment: Exploring Cultural Antecedents Of Actively Destructive Employee Behaviors As A Manifestation Of Voice In Mergers And Acquisitions, Keith Dellano Holloway
Theses and Dissertations
Mergers and acquisitions are frequently leveraged as a vehicle for company growth. However, many of these transactions fail to yield a positive result and often cause a net loss of shareholder value.
There are many interrelated factors at work within a merger or acquisition. Structure, leadership, finances, strategic fit, market, and price are just a few variables to consider. However, the factor of culture, and the failure of cultural integration, has surfaced in literature as a significant contributor to losses within mergers and acquisitions.
This study built on the work of Harris, Hirschman, Kotter, and Schlesinger and examined the deleterious …

Attracting and retaining talent was identified as the most critical growth driver for 77% of U.S. executives in 2022, and they plan to increase investment in talent attraction and retention in the coming years (PricewaterhouseCoopers, 2022). The problem in supporting and guiding leaders’ investments in retention through existing turnover research and findings is two-fold. First, past research has primarily used data collection with “leavers” who have already left the organization, sometimes long after the turnover was experienced. Secondly, studies have focused on attitudes, satisfaction levels, employee attributes, and job features, which have shown poor predictive ability for voluntary turnover (Hom …

Yet an organization’s identity, which provides coherence and stability, may constrain or enable an organization’s capacity for innovation, which at its core is about doing new or different things. This paper explores the dynamics of organizational identity and innovation through a qualitative study involving leaders from eleven U.S. and Canadian academic research libraries—organizations and a profession that are experiencing an abundance of change and identity threats. A major finding of this research is that the very process of scoping and defining innovation can enable …

The Foundation Review
Lessons from the events of this historic time — from a national reckoning with systemic racism to a global pandemic and its economic and social fallout — have deep implications for philanthropy that go beyond grantmaking and include fundamental questions about the sector’s role, power, and influence in advancing equity and social change. Confronting those questions requires a look inward at the practices, policies, structures, mindsets, and cultural norms that govern how foundations operate.
The experience of The California Endowment and The James Irvine Foundation shows what can be learned from this period of crisis and disruption. Through specific examples …
