Development Of A Participative Approach To Guide Organizational Change: Reviewing The Sawtooth Technique, Port Robert Martin Edd

Dissertations

The public sector, too, has found itself under significant pressure to provide needed services but with significantly reduced resources. In each individual case leaders have been seeking new solutions to both old and new problems, and organizations have been faced with change and its impacts. The purpose of this study was to design a methodology that could be used to structure organizational changes in such …

Perceived Communication During Organizational Change, Paula Blunck May 1994

Perceived Communication During Organizational Change, Paula Blunck

Dissertations and Theses

Organizational change often involves the creation of work teams. This research examines how the creation of self-managed work teams within a particular organization affects perceived communication. Previous research suggests that self-managed teams would socially construct a different view of the organization especially as it relates to power than would those in traditional organizational departments. Attitudes about communication and power within the organization are analyzed in nine self-managed teams and five traditional departments. This analysis is conducted through both qualitative and quantitative means. Group comments and discussions are used in a qualitative analysis. Multidimensional scaling is used to reveal underlying attitudinal …

Differentiated Supervision As A Means Of School Improvement, Donald D. Gainey

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This report describes the effort for reducing the discrepancy between the perceived effectiveness of the clinical-supervision process and the teacher-evaluation process. The problem was originally noted when teachers rated the teacher-evaluation process substantially higher than the clinical-supervision process on separate school involvement needs assessments. A survey of students also indicated that there was a substantial difference between teachers they regarded as the “best” and those they regarded as “average.”

Analysis of the problem symptoms revealed that adopted teacher-evaluation policies and procedures were rated highly by teachers as a means of professional development. The lack of definitive policies and procedures for …

Development And Analysis Of A Model For Change In The Workplace, Using Quasi-Experimentation With Computer Professionals In Northwestern Investor Owned Utilities, John Ronald Thompson

Dissertations and Theses

Computer professionals have been agents of change in many organizations. In some cases the role inadvertently became theirs as they were the ones at the vanguard of implementing the new information processing technology in organizations. While in other cases they were the catalysts for change, to force new methods/procedures onto lethargic organizations. While introducing change on others in the organization and adapting to new technological changes themselves, the computer professionals have not really had to face a significant change in their status, power, or importance to the organization. The introduction of the personal computer has brought about significant change in …

The author examines the problems that a nonprofit agency encounters when expanding committees were not organized and utilized correctly. A step-by-step procedure was designed and implemented to develop and maintain a variety of standing committees. The procedures consisted of seven steps: defining the problem and …

Organization Design And Development, Chang-Wang Chen Sep 1989

Organization Design And Development, Chang-Wang Chen

Theses

As our knowledge of the behavioral science continues to increase, so also does our use of that knowledge. One of the most rapidly expanding fields in the development and application of behavioral science knowledge is organization development (OD). Not only are the behavioral sciences receiving more attention in all types of organizations, but many different countries are also becoming more involved in the human aspects of work. The innovations undertaken by McDonald's and Yamazaki Baking in the area of job enrichment is one indication of such interest.

Human needs are changing rapidly, as is the world itself. In terms of …

Organizational Change In Action: A Qualitative Case Study Of Usair's Acquisition Of Pacific Southwest Airlines, Joan A. Miszak Edd Jan 1989

Organizational Change In Action: A Qualitative Case Study Of Usair's Acquisition Of Pacific Southwest Airlines, Joan A. Miszak Edd

Dissertations

Five dominant theories of organizational change have emerged from the literature. Each of these models expressly expand on a singular and specific paradigm of how change can be viewed within organizations. The models of change are the micro-personal-therapeutic, meso-rational-managerial, meso-systems-organic, macro-cultural-symbolic and macro-political-economic. While the contemporary literature on organizational change has done much to further our understanding about the future of organizational change, very few works provide us with case study examples of organizational change in action. Missing is an understanding of what facilitators of change actually do in the process of change. The present study sought to provide a …

Re-Inventing The Corporation And Rediscovering The University, Robert O. Blanchard Oct 1987

Re-Inventing The Corporation And Rediscovering The University, Robert O. Blanchard

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article critiques the trend of universities adopting businesslike practices while corporations increasingly model themselves after universities. Drawing on themes from Re-Inventing the Corporation, it argues that higher education has been dismantling traditions of creativity, autonomy, and broad inquiry in favor of hierarchical management and narrow specialization. By contrast, innovative corporations such as Apple, IBM, and W.L. Gore emphasized vision, co-ownership, self-management, and creativity, cultivating environments that empower employees. The discussion contrasts corporate strategies for the Information Age—flexibility, decentralized communication, encouragement of innovation—with universities’ reliance on conformity, rigid structures, and centralized control. Insights from organizational studies suggest that universities have …

Key ideas include environmental scanning, “error-embracing” leadership, and the importance of marketing strategies for organizational survival. Middle managers are urged to redefine their roles by fostering self-motivating environments, networking, anticipating issues, and demonstrating unique contributions. The article also stresses the significance of social contracts, balancing responsibilities to employees, clients, communities, and funding agencies. Applying these concepts to …

Department Chair As Change Agent, John I. Sisco Apr 1987

Department Chair As Change Agent, John I. Sisco

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines the role of the department chair as a catalyst for change within academic institutions. It considers the origins of chairs—whether promoted internally, recruited from other institutions, or brought in with prior administrative experience—and how these backgrounds shape their effectiveness. The discussion distinguishes between changes typically sought by administration, such as reorganizing programs for efficiency or shifting institutional identity toward research, and those sought by faculty, including greater resources and improved recognition of departmental contributions. Emphasis is placed on setting realistic, short-term goals that engage all faculty members, thereby building momentum and visibility for the department. The article …
