Input Of Tritium To Intermediate Depth Water In The South Pacific, J. R. Harries, G. E. Calf
Input Of Tritium To Intermediate Depth Water In The South Pacific, J. R. Harries, G. E. Calf
Journal of Marine Research
Tritium concentrations have been determined for seawater samples collected near the western boundary of the South Pacific. The deepest penetration of tritium, in terms of either depth or isopycnal surface, occurs between latitudes 14 and 30S and the penetration is greater than that observed in the mid-South Pacific during the Geochemical Ocean Sections Study (GEOSECS) cruise....
Too Cold' Bottom Layers At The Base Of The Scotian Rise, Georges L. Weatherly, Edward A. Kelly Jr.
Too Cold' Bottom Layers At The Base Of The Scotian Rise, Georges L. Weatherly, Edward A. Kelly Jr.
Journal of Marine Research
CTD data indicate that the bottom boundary layer in a region of the western North Atlantic near 40N 62W is a distinct body of relatively cold (θ < 1.82°C), fresh (S < 34.894‰) water. This region is a strip ~ 100 km wide aligned approximately along isobaths centered near the 4900 m isobath on the continental margin near its base....
The Flow Of Equatorial Kelvin Waves And The Equatorial Undercurrent Around Islands, P. B. Rowlands
The Flow Of Equatorial Kelvin Waves And The Equatorial Undercurrent Around Islands, P. B. Rowlands
Journal of Marine Research
A linear theory is presented for the flow of equatorial Kelvin waves and of the equatorial undercurrent around islands situated on or near the equator. The island is modelled as an infinitesimally thin meridional barrier. It is shown that small islands affect the flow very little, while large islands effectively block the flow....
The Effect Of Islands On Low Frequency Equatorial Motions, Mark A. Cane, Yves Du Penhoat
The Effect Of Islands On Low Frequency Equatorial Motions, Mark A. Cane, Yves Du Penhoat
Journal of Marine Research
We develop a complete linear theory for the effects of islands on low frequency waves of the kind thought to be important in the seasonal and interannual variations of the equatorial ocean circulation….
A Topographically Controlled Upwelling Center Off Southern Vancouver Island, Howard J. Freeland, Kenneth L. Denman
A Topographically Controlled Upwelling Center Off Southern Vancouver Island, Howard J. Freeland, Kenneth L. Denman
Journal of Marine Research
From January 1979 to June 1981 an oceanographic experiment off the west coast of Canada provided a unique view of a large annual upwelling event. The upwelling is driven by an interaction between the large scale coastal current systems and a narrow canyon that cuts the continental shelf. This interaction allows water to be raised from depths much greater than those normally expected from the classical wind-driven upwelling mechanisms....

Large-Scale Interannual Physical And Biological Interaction In The California Current, Dudley B. Chelton, Patricio A. Bernal, John A. Mcgowan
Journal of Marine Research
Thirty years of temperature, salinity, steric height and zooplankton data are examined to explore the potential causes of large-scale biological variability in the California Current. The physical and biological properties are all found to be dominated by a pronounced interannual signal with very large spatial scale....

Enrichment And Association Of Lead And Bacteria At Particulate Surfaces In A Salt-Marsh Surface Layer, R. W. Harvey, L. W. Lion, L. Y. Young, J. O. Leckie
Journal of Marine Research
The particle-laden surface layer (~ 150-370 µm) and subsurface waters of a South San Francisco Bay salt marsh were sampled over two tidal cycles and analyzed for particle numbers and particulate-associated and total concentrations of lead and bacteria….
Manganese Cycling In Northeast Pacific Equatorial Waters, John H. Martin, George A. Knauer
Manganese Cycling In Northeast Pacific Equatorial Waters, John H. Martin, George A. Knauer
Journal of Marine Research
Sea water samples collected above, within and below a pronounced oxygen minimum (0-5 µmol liter-1) were analyzed for their Mn content. Amounts of dissolved Mn slowly decreased with depth and little, if any, relationship with oxygen was found. In contrast, suspended particulate Mn values increased markedly at the top of the oxygen minimum....
Plankton Species Assemblages Off Southern Vancouver Island: Geographic Pattern And Temporal Variability, David L. Mackas, Hugh A. Sefton
Plankton Species Assemblages Off Southern Vancouver Island: Geographic Pattern And Temporal Variability, David L. Mackas, Hugh A. Sefton
Journal of Marine Research
Multivariate classification and ordination methods are used to describe the patterns of zooplankton and phytoplankton community composition during four summer-period surveys of the continental shelf region off southern British Columbia….
Geostrophic Equatorial Deep Jets, Charles C. Eriksen
Geostrophic Equatorial Deep Jets, Charles C. Eriksen
Journal of Marine Research
Deep zonal jets in the western Pacific are geostrophic in character at latitudes of a fraction of a degree. This evidence corroborates the interpretation that deep jets very close to the equator take the form of Kelvin waves. Vertical displacements inferred from GEOSECS density profiles in the Pacific and Atlantic suggest deep jets are a general feature of equatorial oceans.
Cooling Processes In Deep, Temperate Lakes: A Review With Examples From Two Lakes In British Columbia, Eddy C. Carmack, David M. Farmer
Cooling Processes In Deep, Temperate Lakes: A Review With Examples From Two Lakes In British Columbia, Eddy C. Carmack, David M. Farmer
Journal of Marine Research
The cooling period in deep, temperate lakes includes the breakdown of the seasonal thermocline, isothermal overturn as the lake cools through 4°C, and winter restratification. The first part of this paper is taken up with a review of the relatively few studies on the seasonal cooling of lakes....
The Thermohaline Driving Mechanism Of Oceanic Jet Streams, G. T. Csanady
The Thermohaline Driving Mechanism Of Oceanic Jet Streams, G. T. Csanady
Journal of Marine Research
Worthington (1972a) advanced the hypothesis that winter cooling of the Gulf Stream south of New England is the cause of the Stream's winter intensification. That loss of buoyancy should result in increased velocity and transport in an oceanic jet stream seems at first paradoxical....
Weddell Deep Water Variability, Arnold L. Gordon
Weddell Deep Water Variability, Arnold L. Gordon
Journal of Marine Research
Temperature of the Weddell Deep Water west of the Greenwich Meridian in 1977 is dramatically lower than that observed in the same region in 1973. The most intense thermal alteration extends from approximately 200 m to 2700 m. Cooling, which averages 0.2°C, accompanies a nearly density compensating salinity decrease, averaging 0.02‰....
On The Determination Of Absolute Velocities In The Ocean, Manuel E. Fiadeiro, George Veronis
On The Determination Of Absolute Velocities In The Ocean, Manuel E. Fiadeiro, George Veronis
Journal of Marine Research
An empirical search procedure based only on hydrographic data and the use of the dynamical method provides a good estimate of the level of no motion. The criterion is to select the level that yields the minimum mean square transport imbalances for the set of carefully chosen independent layers....
A Comparison Of Geostrophic And Measured Velocities In The Equatorial Undercurrent, S. P. Hayes
A Comparison Of Geostrophic And Measured Velocities In The Equatorial Undercurrent, S. P. Hayes
Journal of Marine Research
Profiles of zonal velocity in the upper 500 m at the equator are computed from the differentiated form of the geostrophic relation…
On The Climate Of A Subtropical Ocean Gyre: Decade Timescale Variations In Water Mass Renewal In The Sargasso Sea, William J. Jenkins
On The Climate Of A Subtropical Ocean Gyre: Decade Timescale Variations In Water Mass Renewal In The Sargasso Sea, William J. Jenkins
Journal of Marine Research
A simple concept model of the climatology of a subtropical ocean gyre is developed on the basis of assumed isopycnal transport and latent heat flux. The 27 year record of annually averaged salinities on isopycnals near Bermuda shows clear and systematic variations, and significant (> 95% confidence) correlations with oxygen (positive) and vertical density gradient (negative) support the hypothesis....
Long Range Kelvin Wave Propagation Of Transport Variations In Pacific Ocean Equatorial Currents, R. A. Knox, David Halpern
Long Range Kelvin Wave Propagation Of Transport Variations In Pacific Ocean Equatorial Currents, R. A. Knox, David Halpern
Journal of Marine Research
Two 100 km scale arrays of moored upper ocean current meters, one near 0, 152W, the other near 0, 110W, were used to study the zonal transport of the strong equatorial currents in and above the thermocline. At long periods (several days), fluctuations· in the vertically integrated zonal velocity (transport per unit meridional distance) at a single equatorial mooring were highly correlated with fluctuations in the total transport across the section 0-250 m and 1N-1S, which includes most of the Equatorial Undercurrent....
Observations Of Near-Equatorial Flows In The Eastern Pacific, Ants Leetmaa
Observations Of Near-Equatorial Flows In The Eastern Pacific, Ants Leetmaa
Journal of Marine Research
Direct measurements were made in 1980 and 1981 of the near-equatorial flow field along sections at 110, 102.5, 95, and 85W. The Equatorial Undercurrent weakens as it approaches the Galapagos. Most of the transport is lost from the warmer, upper part of the current....
The Seasonal Hydrography And Circulation Over Nantucket Shoals, Richard Limeburner, Robert C. Beardsley
The Seasonal Hydrography And Circulation Over Nantucket Shoals, Richard Limeburner, Robert C. Beardsley
Journal of Marine Research
Bimonthly hydrographic surveys were begun in May, 1978 to measure the spatial structure and temporal variability of the temperature and salinity fields about Nantucket Shoals over one annual cycle. Moored current meters were also deployed in January, 1979 and in July, 1979 to directly measure the current field and examine low-frequency current variability over the shoals....
Recirculation Reconsidered, James Luyten, Henry Stommel
Recirculation Reconsidered, James Luyten, Henry Stommel
Journal of Marine Research
The Atlantis 50W IGY section is used to test ideas about the application of inverse methods to the determination of the absolute geostrophic circulation of the North Atlantic. We argue that the uncertainties in determining the imbalances of relative layer-transports in the deep layers are so great that the heavy weight given them in the Wunsch-Grant (1982) charts of absolute circulation yields results that are artificially dominated by qottom topography and are not realistic....
One Year Of Nutrient Distribution In The Georges Bank Region In Relation To Hydrography, 1975-1976, Marianna Pastuszak, W. Redwood Wright, Daniel Patanjo
One Year Of Nutrient Distribution In The Georges Bank Region In Relation To Hydrography, 1975-1976, Marianna Pastuszak, W. Redwood Wright, Daniel Patanjo
Journal of Marine Research
The distribution of major nutrients in the Georges Bank region was measured during nine cruises betweep July 1975 and August 1976. The sampling included measurement throughout the water column of nitrate, orthophosphate, silicate, temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen. The distributions of the variables and their annual cycles are described....
Moored Velocity Measurements On The Edge Of The Gulf-Stream Recirculation, W. Brechner Owens, James R. Luyten, Harry L. Bryden
Moored Velocity Measurements On The Edge Of The Gulf-Stream Recirculation, W. Brechner Owens, James R. Luyten, Harry L. Bryden
Journal of Marine Research
Mean velocities, eddy kinetic energies and time series of velocities at several depths are presented from moored current meters for the 15 month period May 1978 to July 1979 as part of the POLYMODE Local Dynamics Experiment, centered at 31N, 69°30'W. The mean velocities in the upper one kilometer are toward the southwest at 2.4 to 4.4 cm/s, consistent with Worthington's (1976) description of the mean circulation of the North Atlantic....
Circulation In The Eastern North Atlantic, Peter M. Saunders
Circulation In The Eastern North Atlantic, Peter M. Saunders
Journal of Marine Research
Basin-wide geostrophic shear profiles have been computed for several latitudes in the eastern Atlantic between 32 and 53N. The absolute velocity on each section has been chosen so that the transport satisfies the Sverdrup relation. It is concluded that the wind-driven currents are not confined to the upper thermocline but extend to great depth....
Temperature Transport And Motional Induction In The Florida Current, Thomas B. Sanford
Temperature Transport And Motional Induction In The Florida Current, Thomas B. Sanford
Journal of Marine Research
Differences of electrical potential across the Florida Current between Jupiter, Florida, and Settlement Point, GBI, are interpreted in terms of mean and seasonal temperature transports. The potential differences arise from the lateral transport of electrical conductivity through the vertical component of the earth's magnetic field. Using the temperature and conductivity relation in the Current, the conductivity transport can be converted to temperature transport....
On Combining Satellite Altimetry With Hydrographic Data, Dean Roemmich, Carl Wunsch
On Combining Satellite Altimetry With Hydrographic Data, Dean Roemmich, Carl Wunsch
Journal of Marine Research
It is shown, by random construction of many sea surfaces, each consistent with geostrophy and mass conservation in the underlying ocean, that absolute sea surface topography relative to a geopotential surface can be estimated to 10 cm accuracy from appropriate in situ measurements of density....
Historical Evidence For Two Gyres In The Somali Current, J. C. Swallow, M. Fieux
Historical Evidence For Two Gyres In The Somali Current, J. C. Swallow, M. Fieux
Journal of Marine Research
Surface currents and some surface temperatures in the Somali Basin have been plotted for May and June of each year from 1900 to 1973 when any data were available. A current pattern containing two clockwise gyres, one situated south of 5N, the other between 5N and 10N, was usually present in June. It is similar to the one observed in a detailed survey of the Somali Current in 1979. Some evidence is presented suggesting that the timing of the development of the gyres, in relation to changes in winds, was similar in other years to the sequence observed in May …
Low-Frequency Temperature Fluctuations Between Ocean Station Echo And Bermuda, W. Sturges, Alan Summy
Low-Frequency Temperature Fluctuations Between Ocean Station Echo And Bermuda, W. Sturges, Alan Summy
Journal of Marine Research
Hydrographic data at Ocean Station Echo (35N, 48W) form an almost continuous 6-year series ending in 1973. The temperature fluctu ations at periods longer than about 8 months appear to be largely from the first vertical mode, and at periods of about 7 to 4 months from the second. These fluctuations are found to be coherent with those seen in the Panulirus data, at Bermuda, if the travel time for group velocity is included....
Small-Scale Surface Stirring And Frontogenesis In The Subtropical Convergence Of The Western North Atlantic, Arthur D. Voorhis, John G. Bruce
Small-Scale Surface Stirring And Frontogenesis In The Subtropical Convergence Of The Western North Atlantic, Arthur D. Voorhis, John G. Bruce
Journal of Marine Research
Direct 9bservations of surface fronts in the subtropical convergence of the western North Atlantic have been made from rapid and densely sampled XBT surveys and by tracking surface drogues. Their rapid formati on (one or two days) and the temporal and spatial variation of frontal currents suggests that ageostrophic motions are crucial in the frontogenic process, in agreement with theoretical models....
On The Pacific Upper-Water Circulation, Mizuki Tsuchiya
On The Pacific Upper-Water Circulation, Mizuki Tsuchiya
Journal of Marine Research
By mapping the distributions of the geostrophic flow and various water properties on the surface where thermosteric anomaly equals 240 × 10-8 m3 kg-1 (σt 25.60 kg m-3), the circulation in the upper layer of the Pacific Ocean has been studied with emphasis on the subtropical anticyclonic gyres in both hemispheres. The North Pacific shows a double-cell subtropical circulation pattern with the poleward cell along about 30N and the equatorward cell along 20-25N, both extending eastward from the western boundary, where the two cells are joined together....
On The Currents And Water Masses North Of The Antilles/Bahamas Arc, John T. Gunn, D. Randolph Watts
On The Currents And Water Masses North Of The Antilles/Bahamas Arc, John T. Gunn, D. Randolph Watts
Journal of Marine Research
The Antilles Current, which is supposed to flow from the Atlantic North Equatorial Current along the Antilles and Bahamas island arc and contribute to the Gulf Stream, does not always exist. Data from the two most extensive grids of hydrographic surveys yet available in this region, one in summer and one in winter, show that mesoscale eddies dominate the baroclinic current field and the distribution of water properties....
