Interrelationship Of Nitrogen And Photo-Period On The Flowering, Growth, And Stem Anatomy Of Certain Long Day And Short Day Plants, Alice Phillips Withrow
Interrelationship Of Nitrogen And Photo-Period On The Flowering, Growth, And Stem Anatomy Of Certain Long Day And Short Day Plants, Alice Phillips Withrow
Butler University Botanical Studies
The relation of nitrogen to the flowering and fruitfulness of plants has been subject of extended investigation by many workers. That nitrogen nutrition is intimately related to flower and fruit formation is generally agreed upon, but the various experiments show that apparently the type of responses obtained are not entirely consistent.

Poultry Progress: How Long Should A Chicken Live?, F. E. Mussehl
Poultry Progress: How Long Should A Chicken Live?, F. E. Mussehl
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
Increased laying flock mortality has disturbed thoughtful hatcherymen, producers, processors, and research workers for several years, and very properly so, because hens which die before their time serve no useful purpose, except to raise in our minds the question, "Why?"
Vitamins D And A In Alfalfa Hay, G. C. Wallis
Vitamins D And A In Alfalfa Hay, G. C. Wallis
Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)
Every farmer knows that adequate amount of vitamin D and A are needed in order to maintain vigorous health, good growth, and efficient production in his livestock. This need has been well established by carefully controlled experimental work and by farm observations. It brings into sharp focus problem of finding the most economical means of providing these important nutrients.
Nutritional Status Of Some Utah Population Groups, Almeda Perry Brown
Nutritional Status Of Some Utah Population Groups, Almeda Perry Brown
Faculty Honor Lectures
The science of nutrition is the science of life. Though man is still ignorant of the true nature of that elusive force we call life, he has learned by means of the discovered laws of nutrition how to preserve and prolong life as well as how to add to the satisfactions of living.
The emergence of the sicence of nutrition from the maze of superstition which for centuries clouded man's thinking is a fascinating story. A story, however, that arouses a feeling of regret that for so long a time man was willing to attribute to supernatural forces all phenomena …

Leaflet No. 7 Food For Victory
Leaflet No. 7 Food For Victory
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
One of the most important things families can do in the present emergency is to keep physically fit. Nutrition is a fundamental factor in physical fitness. Those families who are making a conscientious effort to improve their food habits are lining up for the nation's defense and ultimate victory.
If you are enrolled in the Victory Home and Garden program you are helping to insure yourself and others of an adequate supply of home produced foods through careful planning of production and preservation.
This March 1942 publication discusses the concern about preserving enough food for good health during times of …
Opportunities For Better Family Living Through Conserving Your Health, Mary A. Covert
Opportunities For Better Family Living Through Conserving Your Health, Mary A. Covert
SDSU Extension Circulars
The ability of your family to be happy and successful depends largely upon the personal efficiency and cooperation of each member. Authorities place attitude and ideals as first requisites to efficiency, and health as a close second. Someone defined health as "that condition of the body that makes possible the highest enjoyment of life, and the greatest constructive work." Another adds that "positive health makes one welcome the new day and the new task with assurance." Health is possible for you but you cannot attain it 'by mere wishing. It is built up through knowledge and persistent following of a …
How Fine Should Grain Be Ground For Milk Cows?, G. C. Wallis, T. M. Olson
How Fine Should Grain Be Ground For Milk Cows?, G. C. Wallis, T. M. Olson
Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)
Introduction
The ground beef bin on the Jones farm was empty. Mr. Jones pulled the switch and soon the little mill was humming a song that scarcely changed a note as the first few shovels of grain disappeared down its mouth.
Mr. Jones noted that the grain was scarcely more than cracked. He readjusted the mill to grind it finer, and soon it was spewing out an entirely different product. Did Mr. Jones make a mistake when he readjusted his mill to grind the feed finer for his dairy cows?
Results of an experiment conducted at the South Dakota Agricultural …

Buying Canned Meats : Home Canned Meats, Susan Z. Wilder
Buying Canned Meats : Home Canned Meats, Susan Z. Wilder
SDSU Extension Circulars
Canned meat products are not used as extensively as the canned fruits and vegetables, according to grocerymen. The potted meats are used more in the Summer for picnic lunches and emergency meals. There are a number of reasons for this. Rural homemakers can meat so that they have a ready supply. The commercially canned meats are fairly expensive. Generally, they are not labeled according to U. S. meat grades. According to reports, low quality meat is used. The homemaker can obtain very little information on the quality of canned meat from the label. However, the products sold in interstate trade …

Inexpensive Salads From Home Produced Products, Susan Z. Wilder
Inexpensive Salads From Home Produced Products, Susan Z. Wilder
SDSU Extension Circulars
Salads of fruits and vegetables are a valuable addition to the dietary because they increase the use of "protective foods." "'The protective foods' are four types-milk, fruit, vegetables and eggs which enrich the dietary with calcium and vitamins A, C, and G. "Milk is a good source of calcium and vitamins A, C, and G and an outstanding source of vitamins A and G. "Prominence of these foods in the individual dietary and in the general food supply protects directly against dangers of nutritional deficiencies and helps also to afford the body a better measure of ability to protect itself …
Autobiography Of Proteins In Nutrients, Marguerite Jones
Autobiography Of Proteins In Nutrients, Marguerite Jones
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in 1933, surveys the chemical classification of proteins and their role in human nutrition, with the stated aim of preparing home economics students to understand protein's function in the diet. Jones organizes proteins into three major classes: simple proteins, including albumins, globulins, glutelins, protamins, and histones; conjugated proteins, including nucleo-proteins, glyco-proteins, phospho-proteins, and hemoglobins; and derived proteins, including albumoses, peptones, and peptids, describing the chemical composition, solubility properties, and sources of each.
The thesis then examines amino acids as the end products of protein digestion, identifying those essential for growth and maintenance, including tryptophane, …
Preliminary Report: Feeding Flax Straw To Cattle, J. W. Wilson, T. Wright, F. Fern
Preliminary Report: Feeding Flax Straw To Cattle, J. W. Wilson, T. Wright, F. Fern
Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)
Introduction: This circular gives the results of feeding flax straw to cattle. Reports show that flax was introduced into New England and Virginia, in the early colonial days, and grown chiefly for its fiber. Later its cultivation as a seed crop spread westward with the settlement of new lands. South Dakota ranks third among the states in the production of flax. In the statistical report, issued by the South Dakota Department of Agriculture, for 1930, we find that every county in the state is credited with growing flax. The largest acreage is reported from Perkins County in the West River …

Time Savers In Feeding The Family, Mary A. Dolve
Time Savers In Feeding The Family, Mary A. Dolve
SDSU Extension Circulars
Feeding the family, including the preparation of food, cleaning away and washing of dishes, consumes about 47 percent of the time spent on homemaking activities by the average South Dakota homemaker. This is nearly as much time as is spent on all other tasks and does not in7 elude time spent in planning, purchasing, butchering or other work which has been included under miscellaneous. The average working day is nine hours and twenty-seven minutes. Seven hours and twenty-five minutes are spent on homemaking activities, and one hour and forty-two minutes on outside work. The time spent on homemaking activities is …
Tooth Building Foods, Mary A. Dolve
Tooth Building Foods, Mary A. Dolve
SDSU Extension Circulars
What the family members are eating is largely a matter of habit formation and training. This fact was clearly brought out at 24 county food program determination meetings and the summary of the state homemakers survey. The homemakers survey included 1617 returned health questionnaires from 37 counties and 1242 returned food questionaires' from 24 counties.
Adequate And Economical Meals, Susan Z. Wilder
Adequate And Economical Meals, Susan Z. Wilder
SDSU Extension Circulars
At the county project determination meetings which were held during the early fall months in twenty-eight counties in the state the women discussed the summary of 1200 food questionnaires as well as the survey summary secured through the cooperation of doctors, dentists and grocery men. The survey showed that 15 percent of the children in the families reporting were fussy about their food, 16 percent of the mothers had difficulty in getting the children to drink milk, 15 percent of the children did not eat raw tomatoes and 20 percent did not eat cooked tomatoes. Twenty three percent did not …
Good Food Habits For The Family, Mary A. Dolve
Good Food Habits For The Family, Mary A. Dolve
SDSU Extension Circulars
How to get every member of the family to eat what is placed on the table," is the major food problem faced by the South Dakota Homemaker's according to the recent homemakers survey and the discussions at the county program determination meetings. The survey and discussions indicate that the Home Extension club members, having studied food and nutrition, know fairly well what foods constitute a balanced dietary. In spite of this knowledge however, a large percent are not eating an adequate diet.
