An Analysis Of The Effects Of The Carbohydrate Intake And Hydration On Feeling Of Exertion Throughout A Marathon, Kristine M. Baumann, Kaitlyn Proulx

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The popularity of marathon running has grown exponentially since the 1970s (Noakes, 2003). This major gain in popularity has led to an increased interest in hydration and nutrition for marathon runners (Tucker et al 2009). The effects of dietary factors such as carbohydrates (CHO) and water on endurance has been extensively studied related to performance, but few studies have examined nutrition’s effect on feelings of exertion. The current study aimed to determine how the in-race nutrition and hydration habits of marathon runners affect their feelings of exertion throughout a 26.2-mile race. Individuals running Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, MN on June …

Feasibility Of Using Biofuel By-Products As A Sustainable Nutritional Resource For Aquaculture Production Of Litopenaeus Vannamei, Erik David Demicco Jan 2015

Feasibility Of Using Biofuel By-Products As A Sustainable Nutritional Resource For Aquaculture Production Of Litopenaeus Vannamei, Erik David Demicco

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Many different algal species can provide an acceptable protein ingredient, with good digestibility, for shrimp feeds. Compared to fish meal, similar protein, carbohydrate, and lipid levels can be found in select algal species. Traditional shrimp diets in aquaculture rely on fish meal and fish oil from pelagic fish fisheries. A reduction or elimination of these ingredients would reduce the dependency of shrimp aquaculture on offshore fisheries and increase economic competiveness. Biofuel production produces algal by-products of potential use to aquaculturists that might reduce or eliminate the need for fisheries products in shrimp feed. Established uses for by-products from biofuel production …

Role Of Caveolin-1 And Nrf2 In Nutritional Modulation Of Pcb Toxicity, Michael C. Petriello

Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality in Western societies and is linked to multiple modifiable risk factors including lifestyle choices. Emerging evidence implicates exposure to persistent environmental pollutants, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), as a risk factor for the development or progression of cardiovascular disease. To reduce disease risks, it is critical to identify sensible means of biomedically reducing the toxicity of persistent organic pollutants and related environmental stressors.

First, we tested a hypothesis that endothelial cell inflammation and subsequent cardiovascular toxicity initiated by coplanar PCBs is modulated by the crosstalk between caveolae and Nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like …

Effect Of In Vivo Polybrominated Diphenyl Ether (Pbde) Treatment On Hepatic Glyceroneogenesis And Lipid Metabolism, Kylie Rose Cowens

Master's Theses and Capstones

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are flame-retardant chemicals that contaminate the environment. Through ingestion and inhalation, these chemicals get into the human body, where they affect the liver by suppressing the metabolic enzyme phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK), which is partially responsible for glyceride-glycerol production via glyceroneogenesis. This study investigated the effects of PBDE-induced hepatic PEPCK suppression on glyceroneogenesis, and the associated perturbations in liver lipid metabolism. Twenty-eight male, weanling Wistar rats were treated daily with 14 mg/kg body weight PBDE mixture, DE-71 (TRT, n=14) or corn oil vehicle (CON, n=14) for 28 days. After a 48-hour fast, rats were sacrificed and blood …
