Law Enforcement Perspectives Towards Mental Health Crisis Interventions, Anna P. Silva
Law Enforcement Perspectives Towards Mental Health Crisis Interventions, Anna P. Silva
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Mental health crisis calls create significant challenges for law enforcement officers, who often serve as the first responders to individuals experiencing psychological distress. Research indicates that 50% of fatal encounters with law enforcement involve individuals with a mental health disorder (Fuller et al., 2015; Kindy & Elliott, 2015). Although the increasing prevalence of mental health- related calls, law enforcement officers frequently lack the specialized training and resources necessary to effectively de-escalate these situations (Cohen & Bagwell, 2023). As a result, interactions between police officers and individuals with mental illness tend to lead to criminalization, unnecessary incarceration, and even fatal outcomes. …

Mental Illness Among The Homeless Communities, Tania Wilcox
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The goal of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of the perspectives of individuals with substance use and mental illness on their co-occurring conditions. Mental illness and substance use disorder are commonly known in homeless communities, especially those experiencing chronic homelessness. Other social factors like gentrification, displacement, systemic racism, and insufficient affordable housing also contribute to the problem by restricting the availability of shelter for vulnerable groups. Furthermore, the lack of stable, affordable housing in California is a significant problem, and having access to comprehensive healthcare services exacerbates these problems.

Emerging Black Male Adults' Lived Experiences With Racial Microaggressions And Social Media, Ian L. Griffin Sr.
Emerging Black Male Adults' Lived Experiences With Racial Microaggressions And Social Media, Ian L. Griffin Sr.
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Racial microaggressions on social media take a serious psychological toll on emerging Black male adults (EBMAs), leading to heightened stress, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. Despite increasing awareness of these issues, research has yet to fully examine how religious involvement buffers the mental health effects of digital racial adversity. This study examined how EBMAs experience social media racial microaggressions, the impact of these encounters on their mental health, and whether engagement in religious activities helps reduce psychological distress. This research adopted a qualitative phenomenological design, integrating interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) and thematic analysis to understand these experiences through microaggression theory …

The data collected from the interviews was analyzed using bracketing to …

The Relationships Between Behavioral And Sociocultural Constructs And Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (Ends) And Cannabis Patterns In Hispanic Young Adult University Students, Kevin Sandoval Medina
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The proliferation of both electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) and cannabis has contributed to a concerning trend of dual usage, posing a greater public health risk, particularly pronounced among at-risk populations of increased substance use, such as Hispanic young adult college students. This study utilized the socioecological framework and social cognitive theory to observe behavioral and sociocultural constructs associated with dual use and identify potential risk and protective factors. Four hundred and twenty-one Hispanic young adult university students completed a cross-sectional survey assessing sociodemographics, depression, anxiety, stress, familism, acculturation, self-efficacy, and past month dual use and dual use recency of …

Non-Suicidal Self-Injurious Behavior In Higher Education: Examining Its Prevalence And Correlates, Kacie N. Lancaster
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The prevalence of non-suicidal self-injurious behavior (NSSIB) among college students has notably escalated despite advancements in mental health treatment. NSSIB is defined as intentional destruction of body tissue without suicidal intent. There is a growing need to understand NSSIB in the context of college students who experience unique stressors that influence their mental health. This study (1) determined the prevalence of non-suicidal self-injurious behavior among an undergraduate college student sample, (2) examined the relationship between NSSIB and sociodemographic variables (age, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status), (3) examined the relationship between NSSIB and the variables of psychiatric comorbidity, history of trauma, and …
Teaching Anti-Bullyig Strategies To Elementary School Students, Mariah C. Montanez
Teaching Anti-Bullyig Strategies To Elementary School Students, Mariah C. Montanez
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Anti-bullying education is often absent from after-school programs. Children who are not exposed to anti-bullying education in their after-school programs might experience bullying that could be carried over from school, and could develop negative self-esteem, have academic difficulties, and experience feelings of depression. When elementary-school-aged children in after-school programs learn about anti-bullying skills, they are more likely to develop conflict resolution and management strategies and increase their respect and compassion for their peers. Therefore, I have created a two-day anti-bullying lesson for elementary-aged children in the Campus Kids Connection program at Soquel Elementary in Santa Cruz, California.
Increasing Awareness On Stressors Faced By Immigrants And Their Families In The United States, Jessica N. Guerrero
Increasing Awareness On Stressors Faced By Immigrants And Their Families In The United States, Jessica N. Guerrero
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This paper attempts to provide awareness of the multifaceted stressors that adversely affect the immigrant community, particularly immigrant high school students in the United States. Challenges such as language barriers, discrimination, acculturation, adaptation, and loss of identity contribute to risks of anxiety, depression, social isolation, and suicidal ideation among these students. Recognizing the pressing need to address this issue, this capstone project involves developing and implementing a one-day educational workshop for English Learner (EL) students at Alisal High School in Salinas, California. Grounded in Erikson’s psychosocial development theory, specifically the "identity vs. role confusion" stage, the workshop aimed to provide …

Effects Of Social Emotional Learning On The Mental Health Of Elementary School Students, Desirae Pineda
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The effects of social emotional learning (SEL) can positively affect the mental health of elementary school students.
