A Radial Basis Function Neural Network Algorithm For The Simultaneous Retrieval Of Two Meteorological Parameters From Solar Radiation, Nicholas W. Nzala, Nicolausi Ssebiyonga, Dennis Muyimbwa, Taddeo Ssenyonga

Tanzania Journal of Science

Local meteorological parameters are key in understanding the frequency of occurrence of extreme weather conditions such as floods, and droughts, among others. In this study, we present a method for simultaneous retrieval of two weather parameters. The method is based on already measured monthly average values of weather parameters from 2011 to 2016, which were used to train a Feed-forward radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) to obtain a fast and accurate method to compute global solar radiation for specified weather parameters pair. In inverse modelling, a multidimensional unconstrained non-linear optimization was employed to retrieve the weather parameters pair. The …

Enhancing Service Restoration In Tanzanian Power Grid Using Internet Of Things Sensors And Renewable Energy Sources, Rukia J. Mwifunyi, Daudi C. Mnyanghwalo, Shamte J. Kawambwa

Tanzania Journal of Science

The increased dependence on the electric power grid, coupled with the increasing number of new customers, motivates the need to improve the reliability and resilience of the electric distribution systems. Modern distribution systems are becoming more resilient against power outages due to the increasing integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and the availability of efficient mechanisms for load shedding. Several studies considered fault detection and Service Restoration (SR) as separate problems without considering the implementation feasibility of integrating both solutions. To ensure the resiliency in the power system, it is important to have proper mechanisms which integrate sensing, detection, and …

Identifying Factors Contributing To Under-Five Mortality In Nigeria, Olateju Alao Bamigbala, Ayodeji Oluwatobi * Ojetunde

Tanzania Journal of Science

The under-5 mortality rate (U5MR) is the probability that a child born in a specified year will die before turning 5 years of age. U5MR is still high in Nigeria. Therefore, this study aimed to identify factors contributing to under-5 mortality in Nigeria. The data used in this study were from the 2018 NDHS, encompassing 2013–2018. The methods of analysis used for this study were frequency, percentage, and Zero Inflated Negative Binomial (ZINB) regression. Data were analyzed using R programming v.4.1.2 and p < 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. The result showed 35.4% under-5 mortality out of the 33,924 infant mortality sample data that were collected. The findings revealed maternal age, regions (North East and North West), maternal education (no education), wealth index (poorest households), and size of child at birth (very small birth size) as significant factors associated with under-5 mortality in Nigeria. The results also showed that the odds of under-5 mortality increase as the age of the mother increases. Therefore, the Nigerian government should understand that poverty is not just an economic problem but also a significant factor in health; as a result, the battle against poverty needs to receive the necessary attention.  Keywords:    Under-5 mortality; World Health Organization; Zero inflated distribution; Risk factors; Nigeria.

A Cloud Based Model Symbiotic Organism Search Algorithm For Placement Of Distributed Energy Resources In The Electrical Secondary Distribution Networks, Shamte Kawambwa, Daudi Mnyanghwalo

Tanzania Journal of Science

Abstract The increased penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) technologies to residential users has fostered the need for DERs integration and control methods in the secondary distribution networks (SDN). In order to reap the potential advantages of DERs and achieve their inclusion in the electrical power system while avoiding their negative impacts, the DERs should be optimally placed and sized. Considering the nature of electrical networks and DER operations, the DERs placement is a nondeterministic polynomial hard (NP-hard) optimization problem. Metaheuristic algorithms are efficient for solving DER placement problems. Metaheuristic algorithms for DER placement in SDN involve high computational effort, …

Quantifying The Effects Of Guessing, Position Bias And Prior Knowledge In Multiple Choice Exams, Almasi S Maguya

Tanzania Journal of Science

“Can an examinee pass a multiple-choice (MC) exam by chance?” Many studies have tried to address this question. However, these studies ignore different types of position bias associated with picking an item from a list. Despite the presence of considerable evidence on the existence of position bias in guessing answers in MC exams, these studies assume an examinee chooses answers with equal probability. This paper seeks to fill this gap by quantifying the chance of success in MC exams due to guessing when different types of position bias and prior knowledge are taken into consideration. The paper proposes a probabilistic …

Tanzania Journal of Science

In this research paper, we depict an unprecedented four-dimensional ordinary differential equation modeling the dynamic transmission of the Lassa fever virus incorporating relapse and reinfection rate. Recent studies showed that the recovered individuals from Lassa fever can again be susceptible; which contradicted the common assumptions made by different researchers on modeling of Lassa fever. So, this article corrects and states the implications of the assumptions on the population density. The numerical simulations unveil the effect of relapse, reinfection, and treatment rate in the affected population. Performing sensitivity analysis suggests all new incorporated parameters can impact the infection dynamics substantially. The …

Modelling And Performance Analysis Of Hydrocyclones: The Case Of Buzwagi Gold Mine, Alphonce Wikedzi, Thomas Mütze

Tanzania Journal of Science

The performance of hydrocyclones at Buzwagi Gold Mine (BGM) was investigated in three full scale survey campaigns. Thereafter, several empirical and theoretical hydrocyclone models were used for prediction of hydrocyclone performance. The survey data revealed poor performance of the grinding circuit caused by a circulating load higher than the design. Further, the poor performance of the grinding circuit had consequences on hydrocyclones overflow particle size (i.e. a much coarser product, xP,80 > 200 µm) than target (125 µm). In addition, the operation indicates overloading of the hydrocyclones due to feed rates being 10–18% above the design capacity. Apart from their deficiencies, …

Investigation Of The Effects Of Some Statistical Data Components On The Selection Of Optimum Smoothing Constant, Musibaudeen O. Idris, Busayo S. Adeboye, Buliaminu Kareem, Godwin C. Enwerem, Selimot A. Adekanye Mar 2022

Investigation Of The Effects Of Some Statistical Data Components On The Selection Of Optimum Smoothing Constant, Musibaudeen O. Idris, Busayo S. Adeboye, Buliaminu Kareem, Godwin C. Enwerem, Selimot A. Adekanye

Tanzania Journal of Science

Simple exponential smoothing is one of the best forecast methods, especially for time series data. Its efficacy depends on a parameter called smoothing constant (α) which, if optimally determined, minimises the mean square error (MSE), the mean absolute error (MAE) and the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE). The widely used method for selecting the optimum smoothing constant is to conduct a grid search within a wide range of possible values of α using the trial-and-error method. Not only that this method involves the knowledge of advanced statistical processes, but it is also time-consuming, and its results are limited to the …
