Induction, Bounding, Weak Combinatorial Principles, And The Homogeneous Model Theorem, Denis R. Hirschfeldt, Karen Lange, Richard A. Shore Jan 2015

Induction, Bounding, Weak Combinatorial Principles, And The Homogeneous Model Theorem, Denis R. Hirschfeldt, Karen Lange, Richard A. Shore

Faculty Research and Scholarship

Goncharov and Peretyat'kin independently gave necessary and sufficient conditions for when a set of types of a complete theory T is the type spectrum of some homogeneous model of T. Their result can be stated as a principle of second order arithmetic, which we call the Homogeneous Model Theorem (HMT), and analyzed from the points of view of computability theory and reverse mathematics. Previous computability theoretic results by Lange suggested a close connection between HMT and the Atomic Model Theorem (AMT), which states that every complete atomic theory has an atomic model. We show that HMT and AMT are …

The Finite Embeddability Property For Some Noncommutative Knotted Varieties Of Rl And Drl, Riquelmi Salvador Cardona Fuentes Jan 2015

The Finite Embeddability Property For Some Noncommutative Knotted Varieties Of Rl And Drl, Riquelmi Salvador Cardona Fuentes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Residuated lattices, although originally considered in the realm of algebra providing a general setting for studying ideals in ring theory, were later shown to form algebraic models for substructural logics. The latter are non-classical logics that include intuitionistic, relevance, many-valued, and linear logic, among others. Most of the important examples of substructural logics are obtained by adding structural rules to the basic logical calculus FL. We denote by the varieties of knotted residuated lattices. Examples of these knotted rules include integrality and contraction. The extension of by the rules corresponding to these two equations is …

The Influences Of Mathematics Self-Efficacy, Identity, Interest, And Parental Involvement On Stem Achievement In Algebra For Female High School Students, Nicol R. Howard Jan 2015

The Influences Of Mathematics Self-Efficacy, Identity, Interest, And Parental Involvement On Stem Achievement In Algebra For Female High School Students, Nicol R. Howard

Educational Studies Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the predictability of STEM achievement in Algebra for female high school students utilizing mathematics self-efficacy, mathematics interest, mathematics identity, and parental involvement. This study employed data from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09/12) which consisted of 3,938 female eleventh-grade participants randomly selected from 944 public and private high schools during the fall 2009 academic year. The results of a hierarchical multiple regression indicated that mathematics identity was the strongest predictor of STEM achievement for female high school students, regardless of race. In spite of this significant relationship, STEM achievement outcomes …

Mathematics Teachers’ Use Of The Culturally Relevant Cognitively Demanding Mathematics Task Framework And Rubric In The Classroom, Shelly Jones Jan 2015

Mathematics Teachers’ Use Of The Culturally Relevant Cognitively Demanding Mathematics Task Framework And Rubric In The Classroom, Shelly Jones

NERA Conference Proceedings 2015

Because of the increasing diversity in many classrooms as well as the need to make mathematics relevant for all students, it is important for teachers to implement culturally relevant pedagogy, but also challenge students by maintaining the cognitive demand of mathematics tasks. The purpose of this study is to learn best practices for designing and implementing culturally relevant cognitively demanding (CRCD) mathematics tasks and using the CRCD Mathematics Task Rubric (Matthew, L., Jones, S., & Parker, Y.A., 2013) to examine teacher-created tasks. Teachers who chose to participate in the study took a first step in becoming culturally relevant educators.

Preparing Secondary Mathematics Teachers: A Review Of Research, Gregory Hine

Education Conference Papers

The international literature base concerning the preparation of pre-service secondary mathematics teachers has grown steadily over the past two decades, yet there appears to be no consensus on a best practice approach. A review of three research projects (2 American; 1 Australian) that focus on different aspects of secondary mathematics teacher preparation provides consideration for universities
wishing to strengthen existing programs.

From Stem To Mast: The Incorporation Of Science And Math Curriculum Into A Youth Sailing Program, Abigail Oakes Jan 2015

From Stem To Mast: The Incorporation Of Science And Math Curriculum Into A Youth Sailing Program, Abigail Oakes

Theses & ETDs

In the field of informal science education, there is little quantitative data to support the idea that sports and other outdoor recreational activities serve as effective platforms for science education. This study seeks to fill this gap by exploring the quantitative effects of incorporating a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) curriculum into a youth learn-to-sail program. The two research questions were: 1) Do students exhibit learning gains for the scientific concepts taught in a science-of-sailing curriculum? and, 2) Do students exhibit higher levels of proficiency in sailing when taught using a learn-to-sail curriculum that incorporates scientific concepts? A “science …

The Spectral Zeta Function For Surfaces Of Revolution, James R.F. O'Hagan Jan 2015

The Spectral Zeta Function For Surfaces Of Revolution, James R.F. O'Hagan

Theses & ETDs

Let M be a Riemannian manifold. A domain functional on M is a real valued function on the collection of smoothly bounded domains of M with compact closure. A domain functional is a geometric invariant if it is invariant under the action of the isometry group associated to M. We survey literature associated to two important sequences of geometric invariants, the Dirichlet spectrum and the Poisson spectrum, paying close attention to the principal Dirichlet eigenvalue and the torsional rigidity, or the first element of each sequence, respectively. We study domain functionals in the context of surfaces of revolution. Our main …

Two Compact Incremental Prime Sieves, Jonathan P. Sorenson Jan 2015

Two Compact Incremental Prime Sieves, Jonathan P. Sorenson

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

A prime sieve is an algorithm that finds the primes up to a bound n. We say that a prime sieve is incremental, if it can quickly determine if n+1 is prime after having found all primes up to n. We say a sieve is compact if it uses roughly √n space or less. In this paper, we present two new results.

  • We describe the rolling sieve, a practical, incremental prime sieve that takes O(n log log n) time and O(√n log n) bits of space.
  • We also …

Factorial Growth Rates For The Number Of Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds Of A Given Volume, Christian Millichap Jan 2015

Factorial Growth Rates For The Number Of Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds Of A Given Volume, Christian Millichap

Faculty Publications

The work of Jørgensen and Thurston shows that there is a finite number N(v) of orientable hyperbolic 3-manifolds with any given volume v. In this paper, we construct examples showing that the number of hyperbolic knot complements with a given volume v can grow at least factorially fast with v. A similar statement holds for closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds, obtained via Dehn surgery. Furthermore, we give explicit estimates for lower bounds of N(v) in terms of v for these examples. These results improve upon the work of Hodgson and Masai, which describes examples that grow exponentially fast with v …

The Effects Of Computer-Assisted Instruction On The Mathematics Achievement Of Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders, Kenya Williams Jan 2015

The Effects Of Computer-Assisted Instruction On The Mathematics Achievement Of Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders, Kenya Williams

Theses and Dissertations

Mathematics is essential in everyday life activities and most educational opportunities and careers require mathematical knowledge, thus it is vital that students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) receive sufficient instruction that leads to proficiency in the subject. Performing poorly in mathematics can result in dire future outcomes. This is particularly true for students with EBD, who already experience significant difficulties throughout and after their educational career. While studies have documented the academic and behavioral problems of students with EBD, not until recently have studies begun to concentrate on academic interventions that may aid in preventing some of the academic …

The Impact Of Math Anxiety In The Primary Grades, Amanda R. Anderson-Mix Jan 2015

The Impact Of Math Anxiety In The Primary Grades, Amanda R. Anderson-Mix

Mathematics Graduate Theses

Math anxiety is an increasingly common occurrence among individuals when working with mathematical concepts. While researching math anxiety the author came across common gender stereotypes implying: women do not perform as well as men in the field of mathematics, women experience a much higher level of math anxiety than men, and most women do not appreciate performing mathematical tasks. Although the concept of math anxiety is an interesting topic to the author, it's important to look deeper than simply the question, “What is math anxiety?” Seeing these stereotypical assumptions that women have higher math anxiety levels, it made this author …

Gender, Self-Efficacy, And Mathematics Achievement: An Analysis Of Fourth Grade And Eighth Grade Timss Data From The United States, Jennifer Anne Evans Jan 2015

Gender, Self-Efficacy, And Mathematics Achievement: An Analysis Of Fourth Grade And Eighth Grade Timss Data From The United States, Jennifer Anne Evans

Educational Studies Dissertations

It has been argued by some that boys are inherently better in mathematics than girls (Halpern, 2012; Summers, 2005). However, according to international assessments such as the Trends in Mathematics and Science Study’s (TIMSS) and Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), boys do not always outperform girls in mathematics (Mullis, Martin, Foy, & Arora, 2012; OECD, 2014). As such, something other than biology might better explain variations in mathematics performance. One explanation may be self-efficacy, a label used to describe judgments people make about themselves in terms of whether or not they have the capability of doing something (Bandura, 1995; …

Using Context-Aware Ubiquitous Learning To Support Students' Understanding Of Geometry, Helen Crompton Jan 2015

Using Context-Aware Ubiquitous Learning To Support Students' Understanding Of Geometry, Helen Crompton

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications

In this study, context-aware ubiquitous learning was used to support 4th grade students as they learn angle concepts. Context-aware ubiquitous learning was provided to students primarily through the use of iPads to access real-world connections and a Dynamic Geometry Environment. Gravemeijer and van Eerde’s (2009), design-based research (DBR) methodology was used in this study. As a systematic yet flexible methodology, DBR utilizes an iterative cyclical process of design, implementation, analysis, and revision. Using this particular DBR methodology, a local instruction theory was developed that includes a set of exemplar curriculum activities and design guidelines for the development of context-aware ubiquitous …

Explaining Participation : An Explanatory History Of Select Gender Patterns In Undergraduate Stem, Michael Pasquale Mastroianni

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This explanatory study examines three focal periods in undergraduate STEM as related to the gender gap. Social, economic, and more general historical data are used to develop a clear and powerful explanation of baccalaureate trends in biology and engineering. Specifically, historical accounts are offered for 1) a ten-year period in undergraduate biology in which the number of baccalaureates awarded to men decreased 44 percent, while the number of baccalaureates awarded to women decreased one percent; 2) the start of a twenty-year period in which the number of bachelor’s degrees awarded in the biological sciences increased 150 percent—from 36,068 degrees in …
