Pre-Service And In-Service Teachers’ Rubric Assessments Of Mathematical Problem Solving, Grant Kuehl, Kimberly Sofronas, Abigail Lau
Pre-Service And In-Service Teachers’ Rubric Assessments Of Mathematical Problem Solving, Grant Kuehl, Kimberly Sofronas, Abigail Lau
NERA Conference Proceedings 2014
This paper will report findings from a study designed to explore pre-service and in-service teachers’ rubric assessments of 4th-grade student mathematics work samples. Pre-service and in-service elementary school teachers were recruited to participate in this survey-based research which included three hypotheses: (a) in-service teachers would report greater confidence levels using rubrics and exhibit better attitudes toward assessment than pre-service teachers, (b) in-service teachers would be more reliable in their rubric scores than pre-service teachers, and (c) in-service teachers would identify greater differences than pre-service teachers in their evaluations of the work samples. Descriptive statistics, t-tests, and qualitative methods …

Pre-Service Teachers' Self-Efficacy For Teaching Mathematics, Shannon Mccampbell
Pre-Service Teachers' Self-Efficacy For Teaching Mathematics, Shannon Mccampbell
Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs
Teachers self-efficacy beliefs start forming upon entering their teacher education programs and continue to develop throughout their first few years of teaching. They then remain relatively stable for the remainder of their teaching careers. Teachers' self-efficacy beliefs have been shown to influence teachers' job satisfaction, resilience, burnout rates, health, motivation, teaching behaviors, and students' academic achievement. It is important to understand how they form and what influences their development. The purpose of this study is to better understand the complex relationships involved during the formation PSTs' self-efficacy beliefs. The study examined the relationships between PSTs' self-efficacy beliefs for teaching and …

Performance Analysis And Optimization Of Hermite Methods On Nvidia Gpus Using Cuda, Evan T. Dye
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
In this thesis we present the first, to our knowledge, implementation and performance analysis of Hermite methods on GPU accelerated systems. We give analytic background for Hermite methods; give implementations of the Hermite methods on traditional CPU systems as well as on GPUs; give the reader background on basic CUDA programming for GPUs; discuss performance characteristics of GPUs; we give recommended design choices for GPU implementations of Hermite methods; and present and discuss examples which illustrate the effect these design choices have on performance. Lastly, we present areas of future research that may yield increased performance for Hermite methods on …

A Glimpse Into Secondary Students’ Understanding Of Functions, Jonathan L. Brendefur, Gwyneth Hughes, Robert Ely
A Glimpse Into Secondary Students’ Understanding Of Functions, Jonathan L. Brendefur, Gwyneth Hughes, Robert Ely
Curriculum, Instruction, and Foundational Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
In this article we examine how secondary school students think about functional relationships. More specifically, we examined seven students’ intuitive knowledge in regards to representing two real-world situations with functions. We found students do not tend to represent functional relationships with coordinate graphs even though they are able to do so. Instead, these students tend to represent the physical characteristics of the situation. In addition, we discovered that middleschool students had sophisticated ideas of dependency and covariance. All the students were able to use their models of the situation to generalize and make predictions. These findings suggest that secondary students …

Although mathematical and quantitative reasoning skills are an essential part of adult life in our society, many students arrive at post-secondary education without such skills. Taking a standard mathematics course such as calculus may do little to improve those skills. Using a modification of the Tapia & Marsh questionnaire, we surveyed 62 students taking a broad quantitative reasoning course designed to develop quantitative skills, with respect to two broad attitudinal areas: students’ perception of their own ability, confidence and anxiety, and their perception of the value of mathematics in their studies and their lives. Pre- to post-course comparisons were done …

Braid Computations For The Crossing Number Of Klein Links, Michael Bush, Danielle Shepherd, Joseph Smith, Sarah Smith-Polderman, Jennifer Bowen, John Ramsay

Klein links are a nonorientable counterpart to torus knots and links. It is shown that braids representing a subset of Klein links take on the form of a very positive braid after manipulation. Once the braid has reached this form, its number of crossings is the crossing number of the link it represents. Two formulas are proven to calculate the crossing number of K(m,n) Klein links, where m≥n≥1. In combination with previous results, these formulas can be used to calculate the crossing number for any Klein link with given values of m and n.

An Explanation For The Use Of Arrays To Promote The Understanding Of Mental Strategies For Multiplication, Lorraine Day, Derek Hurrell
Education Papers and Journal Articles
This article provides a convincing argument for using arrays to promote students’ understandings of mental computation strategies for multiplication. Also a range of different examples that illustrate the benefits of arrays in the primary classroom are provided.

Education Conference Papers
By identifying the learning experiences that need to be developed in the primary school, and how secondary teachers can build on these experiences, ensures solid algebraic understanding and a smooth transition between primary and secondary mathematics. Using concrete materials, within a concrete-representational-abstract pedagogical approach, may be seen as one among many methods that contribute to the overall process of developing algebraic skills. Linking an area-based model to previous understandings involving numbers should assist the conceptual understanding of algebraic expansion and factorisation to ensure that students are not just fluent in algebraic manipulation but also understand how the processes work.
Mathematics: A Good Predictor For Success In A Health Science Degree, G Hine, R Anderton, C Joyce
Mathematics: A Good Predictor For Success In A Health Science Degree, G Hine, R Anderton, C Joyce
Education Conference Papers
Research-based literature indicates that secondary school mathematics performance is highly predictive of university performance Moreover, scholars suggest that success in secondary mathematics courses translates into success in tertiary degrees where mathematics is required. This paper examines the extent to which the completion of secondary school mathematics courses is predictive of academic success for 57 first-year students enrolled in a Health Science degree at The University of Notre Dame Australia (UNDA) (Fremantle Campus). Using the University’s databases, the level of mathematics completed at secondary school was examined against gender, Tertiary Entrance Ranking (TER) and Grade Point Average (GPA). A statistical analysis …

Overcategories And Undercategories Of Model Categories, Philip S. Hirschhorn
Overcategories And Undercategories Of Model Categories, Philip S. Hirschhorn
Faculty Research and Scholarship
If M is a model category and Z is an object of M, then there are model category structures on the category of objects of M over Z and the category of objects of M under Z under which a map is a cofibration, fibration, or weak equivalence if and only if its image in M under the forgetful functor is, respectively, a cofibration, fibration, or weak equivalence. It is asserted without proof in "Model categories and their localizations" that if M is cofibrantly generated, cellular, or proper, then so is the category of objects of M over Z. The …
Functorial Cw-Approximation, Philip S. Hirschhorn
Functorial Cw-Approximation, Philip S. Hirschhorn
Faculty Research and Scholarship
The usual construction of a CW-approximation is functorial up to homotopy, but it is not functorial. In this note, we construct a functorial CW-approximation. Our construction takes inclusions of subspaces into inclusions of subcomplexes, and commutes with intersections of subspaces of a fixed space.
