Some Problems In Differential And Subdifferential Calculus Of Matrices., Priyanka Grover Dr. May 2015

Some Problems In Differential And Subdifferential Calculus Of Matrices., Priyanka Grover Dr.

Doctoral Theses

A central problem in many subjects like matrix analysis, perturbation theory, numerical analysis and physics is to study the effect of small changes in a matrix A on a function f(A). Among much studied functions on the space of matrices are trace, determinant, permanent, eigenvalues, norms. These are real or complex valued functions. In addition, there are some interesting functions that are matrix valued. For example, the (matrix) absolute value, tensor power, antisymmetric tensor power, symmetric tensor power. When a function is differentiable, one of the ways to study the above problem is by using the derivative of f at A, …

Some Studies On Selected Stream Ciphers Analysis Fault Attack & Related Results., Subhadeep Banik Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Stream Ciphers are important Symmetric Cryptological primitives, built for the purpose of providing secure message encryption. As no formal security proofs exist, our confidence in these algorithms is largely based on the fact that intense cryptanalysis has been carried out over several years without revealing any weakness. This thesis makes some independent contributions to the cryptanalysis of a selection of stream ciphers. In this thesis, we take a closer look at two stream ciphers viz. RC4+ designed by Maitra et al. at Indocrypt 2008 and GGHN designed by Gong et al. at CISC 2005. Both these ciphers were designed as viable …

1-Relaxed Edge-Sum Labeling Game, Hang Do, Timothy Singer, Brent Moran May 2015

1-Relaxed Edge-Sum Labeling Game, Hang Do, Timothy Singer, Brent Moran

Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement

We introduce a new graph labeling and derive a game on graphs called the 1-relaxed modular edge-sum labeling game. Given a graph G and a natural number n, we define a labeling by assigning to each edge a number from {1,..., n} and assign a corresponding label for each vertex u by the sum of the labels of the edges incident to u, computing this sum modulo n. Similar to the chromatic number, we define L(G) for a graph G as the smallest n such that G has a proper labeling. We provide bounds for L(G) for various …

Asymptotic Behavior Of Traveling Wave Solutions To Reaction-Diffusion Equations, Malley M. Nason May 2015

Asymptotic Behavior Of Traveling Wave Solutions To Reaction-Diffusion Equations, Malley M. Nason

Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement

We will discuss travelling wave solutions to reaction-diffusion equations of the form:

ut=uxx+ up (1-uq)

which can be used as a mathematical model for various biological phenomena, as well as to model problems in combustion theory. We identify conditions on the wave speed so that travelling wave solutions exist for the case p ≥1 and q ≥1. Moreover, we estimate the rate of decay of the travelling wave solutions. When p > 1 and q ≥1, this estimate requires center manifold theory because the typical linear methods fail to work. Through the mathematical analysis …

Searching For A Lost Plane, Yichen You, Yu Yan May 2015

Searching For A Lost Plane, Yichen You, Yu Yan

Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement

Malaysia plane MH370 disappeared en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on 8, March 2014. Besides considering the factors such as air piracy, weather, electromagnetic wave, and kinds of bugs of the airplane, in order to find the wreckage efficiently the growing concern is to confirm a limited area where the airplane probably fell, and then to find an optimum way to find the plane. It’s essential to build such a model involving both of the two layers mentioned above that can cover all the searching area by using the most efficient way.

The first layer is to confirm the …

Unit Interval Orders Of Open And Closed Intervals, Alan Shuchat, Randy Shull, Ann N. Trenk May 2015

Unit Interval Orders Of Open And Closed Intervals, Alan Shuchat, Randy Shull, Ann N. Trenk

Faculty Research and Scholarship

A poset P=(V,≺) is a unit OC interval order if there exists a representation that assigns an open or closed real interval I(x) of unit length to each x ∈ P so that x ≺ y in P precisely when each point of I(x) is less than each point in I(y). In this paper we give a forbidden poset characterization of the class of unit OC interval orders and an efficient algorithm for recognizing the class. The algorithm takes a poset P as input and either produces a representation or returns a forbidden poset induced in P.

Book Review: How To Bake Pi: An Edible Exploration Of The Mathematics Of Mathematics, Darren B. Glass May 2015

Book Review: How To Bake Pi: An Edible Exploration Of The Mathematics Of Mathematics, Darren B. Glass

Math Faculty Publications

If you think about it, mathematics is really just one big analogy. For one example, the very concept of the number three is an drawing an analogy between a pile with three rocks, a collection of three books, and a plate with three carrots on it. For another, the idea of a group is drawing an analogy between adding real numbers, multiplying matrices, and many other mathematical structures. So much of what we do as mathematicians involves abstracting concrete things, and what is abstraction other than a big analogy? [excerpt]

Self-driving cars, also known as autonomous vehicles, are being researched and tested by automakers, technology industry leaders, and other institutions. Lawmakers and politicians are discussing the legislation that will affect the fate of such technology. Primary benefits include safety, mobility, free time, less traffic, and green effects. However, there are also obstacles to the implementation of self-driving vehicles including consumer acceptance, legal liability, and cost. With the potential shift in responsibility from driver to automaker, rating factors for insurance may change, weighing more heavily on the model of the car as a factor. The fate of auto insurance is in …

Identifying Factors Common Among Students Who Do Not Fit The Typical Mathematics Self-Efficacy And Achievement Correlation, Jodi H. Mantilla May 2015

Identifying Factors Common Among Students Who Do Not Fit The Typical Mathematics Self-Efficacy And Achievement Correlation, Jodi H. Mantilla

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A student’s self-efficacy, or their belief in their ability to perform a specific behavior, has been shown to have a positive correlation with their academic achievement. In other words, if their self-efficacy is high, their academic achievement is high. If self-efficacy is low, likewise their achievement is low. Research has shown that this correlation is especially true when looking at the self-efficacy and academic achievement in a specific subject, such as mathematics. However, in a typical classroom, teachers experience students who have very high self-efficacy in their mathematics abilities yet perform mathematics tasks at a low level. They may also …
