The Impact Of Non-Band Music Participation On The Academic Achievement Of 6th Grade Mathematics Students, Sherica Denise Jones-Lewis May 2015

The Impact Of Non-Band Music Participation On The Academic Achievement Of 6th Grade Mathematics Students, Sherica Denise Jones-Lewis

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

It is hypothesized that participation in non-band music has a positive impact on mathematics achievement. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, the theory of self-determination, multiple intelligence theory, and brain research provide a theoretical foundation in support of this conjecture. This causal comparative study seeks to address three questions related to the hypothesis: a) is there a difference between the academic achievement of 6th grade mathematics students based on non-band music participation status; b) is there a difference between the academic achievement of 6th grade males based on non-band music participation; and c) is there a difference between the academic achievement of …

Lift Every Voice And Sing. A Response To "Mathematics For What? High School Students Reflect On Mathematics As A Tool For Social Inquiry", Anita Bright

Democracy & Education

In this response, I applaud the work initiated in this research and underscore some of the key reasons I find it so valuable. Building from this, I also issue a call to the greater mathematics education community—particularly the large mathematics professional organizations—to consider the ways their organizations have conceptualized and framed equity work, and invite them to entertain the idea of remapping their visions in ways that are more forward thinking and less traditionally safe.

A Framework For Evaluating Learning Progressions On Features Related To Their Intended Uses, Jennifer L. Kobrin, Sarah Larson, Ashley Cromwell, Patricia Garza

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

In recent years, learning progressions (LPs) have captured the interest of educators and policy makers. There have been numerous efforts to develop LPs aligned to college and career readiness standards, to unpack these standards, and to provide more clarity on the pathways students follow to reach them. There is great variation, however, in the structure, content, and features of LPs, and these have implications for the LP’s most appropriate use. The purpose of this research was to devise a framework to understand and evaluate key features of an LP, including its structure, content, usability, and validity evidence. We maintain that …

Simd Within A Register On Linear Feedback Shift Registers, Karl Ott Apr 2015

Simd Within A Register On Linear Feedback Shift Registers, Karl Ott

Computer Science

Linear feedback shift registers (LFSRs) are used throughout a subset of cryptography. They have long been deployed as a means to generate a pseudo-random number stream. The random number generation provided by the LFSRs has been utilized in stream ciphers ranging from consumer to military grade. For example GSM privacy relies on the A5/1 stream cipher which in turn relies on LFSRs to generate the keystream. They are deployed because they are easy to construct, yet still provide strong cryptographic properties. The scope of this project is to speed up the simulation of LFSRs. The method of speeding up LFSRs …

Chess Instruction In The Mathematics Classroom: Implications For Critical-Thinking And Academic Skills: A Meta-Synthesis, Russel L. Gates

Special Education Masters Program Theses

Chess instruction during the school day or in a club format has been shown to increase achievement in mathematics, science, and reading comprehension. Students of all achievement levels experience positive growth in achievement within a relatively short period of time. Critical thinking skills, perseverance, and motivation to learn are also increased with the implementation of chess instruction. This meta-analysis of the literature on chess instruction and critical thinking skills investigates the increasing mathematics, science, and reading comprehension for students, particularly those who experience learning disabilities.

Reflective journaling within a middle grades mathematics classroom offers great potential as a practice for both educators and students. This paper examines the previous work that has been completed while also exploring the effectiveness of the practice in a fifth grade math classroom. The research shows that while implementing reflective journaling in a math classroom is time consuming, the benefits of opening lines of communication between pupil and teacher and improving the student learning experience outweigh the negatives. This study focuses on a fifth grade math class composed of 26 students who wrote daily in their journals. The data discussed …

Courtship In The Borderlands: Hollistic Intimate Space Creation Within Courtship Ideaologies, Alejandro Sánchez Apr 2015

Courtship In The Borderlands: Hollistic Intimate Space Creation Within Courtship Ideaologies, Alejandro Sánchez

The Compass

While telling me the story of how she met her husband, Mrs. Aguilar told me “I really feel bad for your generation, they are missing out on falling in love.” She was referring to the courtship practices, or the social regulation and cultural markers between two individuals who create a social relation developing a “relationship.”1 She was comparingthe courtship practices of her generation to that of mine and her statement is reflective of the changes in the cultural environment. From courting, a “relationship” can develop. Its dimensions are defined by the mediation between cultural norms and the agent, and can …

Strategies For Leaders To Counter Social Loafing Through The Use Of Organizational Citizenship Behavior: A Literature Review, Richard Hildreth Apr 2015

Strategies For Leaders To Counter Social Loafing Through The Use Of Organizational Citizenship Behavior: A Literature Review, Richard Hildreth

The Compass

Social loafing (SL) is a counterintuitive phenomenon that describes a decrease of efficiency observed in both small groups and large organizations. Research over the past century has increased our understanding of SL and identified antecedent factors that appear to reduce or exacerbate its effect. Subsequent organizational models have beenconceived and evolved, starting with organizational citizenship behavior (OCB), which led toward contextualperformance (CP), and recently to contextual and citizenship performance (CCP). Each type of model can provide valuable insight explaining employee behavior and under which contexts SL occurs. Research shows that OCB has improves organizational productivity and competitiveness, due to organizational …

Oak Regeneration In An Eastern Pennsylvania Forest: Is Prescribed Fire Needed?, Samanatha M. Ebert Apr 2015

Oak Regeneration In An Eastern Pennsylvania Forest: Is Prescribed Fire Needed?, Samanatha M. Ebert

The Compass

Fire has shaped the American landscape as much as any other natural or anthropogenic disturbance such as flooding, glaciers, and tornadoes, or logging. Native Americans used fire for thousand of years to facilitate farming, travel, and hunting. Since the 1930s, the United States Forest Service has instituted and maintained a policy of firesuppression. This has changed the composition of American forests allowing shade- tolerant later successional species to thrive, but fire-adapted species are declining. This study establishes a baseline of tree composition of State Game Lands 210 in Dauphin County in Eastern Pennsylvania forest in preparation for the proposed controlled …

Bootstrapping Vs. Asymptotic Theory In Property And Casualty Loss Reserving, Andrew J. Difronzo Jr. Apr 2015

Bootstrapping Vs. Asymptotic Theory In Property And Casualty Loss Reserving, Andrew J. Difronzo Jr.

Honors Projects in Mathematics

One of the key functions of a property and casualty (P&C) insurance company is loss reserving, which calculates how much money the company should retain in order to pay out future claims. Most P&C insurance companies use non-stochastic (non-random) methods to estimate these future liabilities. However, future loss data can also be projected using generalized linear models (GLMs) and stochastic simulation. Two simulation methods that will be the focus of this project are: bootstrapping methodology, which resamples the original loss data (creating pseudo-data in the process) and fits the GLM parameters based on the new data to estimate the sampling …

Mathematical Modeling Of Trending Topics On Twitter, Jonathan S. Skaza

Honors Projects in Mathematics

Created in 2006, Twitter is an online social networking service in which users share and read 140-character messages called Tweets. The site has approximately 288 million monthly active users who produce about 500 million Tweets per day. This study applies dynamical and statistical modeling strategies to quantify the spread of information on Twitter. Parameter estimates for the rates of infection and recovery are obtained using Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods. The methodological strategy employed is an extension of techniques traditionally used in an epidemiological and biomedical context (particularly in the spread of infectious disease). This study, which addresses …

Inside Out: Properties Of The Klein Bottle, Andrew Pogg, Jennifer Daigle, Deirdra Brown Apr 2015

Inside Out: Properties Of The Klein Bottle, Andrew Pogg, Jennifer Daigle, Deirdra Brown

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

A Klein Bottle is a two-dimensional manifold in mathematics that, despite appearing like an ordinary bottle, is actually completely closed and completely open at the same time. The Klein Bottle, which can be represented in three dimensions with self-intersection, is a four dimensional object with no intersection of material. In this presentation we illustrate some topological properties of the Klein Bottle, use the Möbius Strip to help demonstrate the construction of the Klein Bottle, and use mathematical properties to show that the Klein Bottle intersection that appears in ℝ3 does not exist in ℝ4. Introduction: Topology

Researchers have been analyzing the difference in performance between female and male math students since it was first documented in the 1950s. The issue of male students disproportionately outperforming their female counterparts, also known as the math gender gap, has been studied extensively over the last few decades with researchers attempting to understand what contributes to math gender gaps and how they can be closed. This study examined the current state of the math gender gap, how teachers incorporate gender equity into their practices, and the attitudes and beliefs of students in relation to math by conducting a three-part classroom …

Mathematical Explorations Of Card Tricks, Timothy R. Weeks Apr 2015

Mathematical Explorations Of Card Tricks, Timothy R. Weeks

Senior Honors Projects

In this project, we explore various mathematical topics as they apply to an assortment of card tricks. We will focus on an examination of theorems applied to the manipulation of cards in an attempt to prove why certain card tricks work. These theorems utilize abstract algebra, probability, number theory, and combinatorics. Many tricks can be explained this way, instead of singularly by sleight of hand or other “magical” methods. We will rigorously prove the theorems and principles that explain these concepts, focusing primarily on the card tricks and examples presented in Mathematical Card Magic by Colm Mulcahy (2013).
