Leopoldo Lugones And Jorge Luis Borges On Science: The Garden Of Forking Opinions, John G. Zehnder Sep 2015

Leopoldo Lugones And Jorge Luis Borges On Science: The Garden Of Forking Opinions, John G. Zehnder

Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

This paper attempts to show how the fantastic authors Leopoldo Lugones and Jorge Luis Borges expressed different viewpoints about science and technology through their short stories. These Argentine authors are among Latin America’s most famous authors in the genre of the fantastic. However, these two literary luminaries diverged greatly with regard to their opinion about the role of science in society. While Lugones considered scientific progress to a grave threat to the moral fabric and well-being of society, Borges believed that scientific theories underpin and intersect with a variety of different experiences and thus can serve as tools to explore …

Effects Of Student Family Structure And Attendance On Academic Achievement In Middle Grades Mathematics, Bobby Sneed Sep 2015

Effects Of Student Family Structure And Attendance On Academic Achievement In Middle Grades Mathematics, Bobby Sneed

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this study was to explore the impact student attendance and family structure had on academic achievement as measured by the Georgia mandated criterion referenced competency test (CRCT) in middle grades mathematics. There were many factors that could have come into play regarding the level of academic achievement each child experiences. With federal, state and local entities placing increased pressure on schools and educators to be more accountable, specifically in the form of student test scores, it seemed imperative to understand the external variables that may negatively impact student learning potential. Utilizing the student’s family structure data reported …

Elementary Students’ Perceptions Of Gender Equity In Mathematics Classes, Debra Jacobson Sep 2015

Elementary Students’ Perceptions Of Gender Equity In Mathematics Classes, Debra Jacobson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

There have been various research studies stating that in elementary school, gender bias in all subjects is nonexistent. However, other researchers interested in gender equity in the mathematics classroom have recognized that gender bias does not occur in early elementary school grades but exists by middle school. Thus, research in this area is greatly needed. This study examined children in the third, fourth, and fifth grades to determine whether students’ perceptions of their own mathematical abilities relate to their perceptions of their teacher’s beliefs about gender bias in mathematics. Pearson Product-Moment correlation and Point-Biserial correlations were used to analyze data. …

Some Issues In Unsupervised Feature Selection Using Similarity., Partha Pratim Kundu Dr. Aug 2015

Some Issues In Unsupervised Feature Selection Using Similarity., Partha Pratim Kundu Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Pattern recognition is what humans do most of the time, without any conscious effort, and fortunately excel in. Information is received through various sensory organs, processed simultaneously in the brain, and its source is instantaneously identified without any perceptible effort. The interesting issue is that recognition occurs even under non-ideal conditions, i.e., when information is vague, imprecise or incomplete. In reality, most human activities depend on the success in performing various pattern recognition tasks. Let us consider an example. Before boarding a train or bus, we first select the appropriate one by identifying either the route number or its destination …

Using Graphic Organizers, Cooperative Learning, And Written Reflection To Improve Mathematics Problem Solving Skills, Kara Jean Odegaard

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

The research question addressed is, how can cooperative learning, graphic organizers, and writing improve eighth grade advanced geometry students’ problem solving skills? The motivating factor for this capstone was students being unsuccessful when trying to solve an assignment which required synthesizing information and problem solving. This capstone documents the process of having students complete problem solving assignments using a graphic organizer, cooperative learning, and reflecting on the assignment through writing. The researcher found success and struggles with the use of these tools and concludes that 1) students were more successful in the problem solving process when they used the graphic …

Mathematical Game Creation And Play Assists Students In Practicing Newly-Learned Challenging Concepts, Kalyn Jon Cody, Audrey C. Rule, Benjamin R. Forsyth

Curriculum & Instruction Faculty Publications

Twenty-four high-performing fifth grade students (aged 10 - 11 years) participated in a year-long study in which conditions alternated for six instructional units between lecture-based mathematics instruction and practice through solving additional problems in small groups versus practice through designing and playing mathematics games related to the topic. Students scored similarly on all units at the time of the posttest. Creating games allowed students to examine concepts on their own, making sense of them at a deeper level, avoiding confusion. Game-making may also have made the mathematics more personal, relevant, and interesting. The authors suggest that mathematics teachers consider adding …

What Concerns Are Secondary Mathematics Teachers Experiencing With The Implementation Of The Common Core State Standards For Mathematics And Is There A Relationship Between The Concerns And Professional Development Received?, Suzanne Therez Jennings

Dissertations

Using the Concerns Based Adoption Model (CBAM) as the theoretical framework, this mixed-methods study utilized three research methods, quantitative, profile interpretation, and qualitative to answer the research questions to investigate the concerns teachers were experiencing during the first year of implementing the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) and to determine if professional development affected those concerns. The Stage of Concern questionnaire which included two open-ended questions was employed to survey 88 secondary Mississippi mathematics teachers. MANOVA was used to investigate any differences in the means of the relative levels of intensity present within the subgroups which are inconclusive. …

Monetary Risk Measure With Applications In Portfolio Management-Partial Hedging, Angela Tsao Aug 2015

Monetary Risk Measure With Applications In Portfolio Management-Partial Hedging, Angela Tsao

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Quantifying the risk of the uncertainty in the future value of a portfolio is a key task in risk management. For decades many researchers have been trying to formalize sophisticated risk measures and apply them in the real financial world. In view of that this dissertation is dedicated to investigate the development of risk measures along with the applications in risk management, particularly in partial hedging under stochastic interest rate. In this dissertation we assess the partial hedging problems by formulating hedging strategies that minimize conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) of the portfolio loss under stochastic interest rate environment. The combination of …

Deformations Of Axially Symmetric Initial Data And The Angular Momentum-Mass Inequality, Ye Sle Cha Aug 2015

Deformations Of Axially Symmetric Initial Data And The Angular Momentum-Mass Inequality, Ye Sle Cha

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In this dissertation, we study geometric inequalities for black holes, mainly the angular momentum-mass inequality and the angular momentum-mass-charge inequality. Firstly, we show how to reduce the general formulation of the angular momentum-mass inequality, for (non-maximal) axially symmetric initial data of the Einstein equations, to the known maximal case. This procedure is based on a certain deformation of the initial data which preserves the relevant geometry, while achieving the maximal condition. More importantly, we compute the scalar curvature formula for the deformation of initial data, which shows that the dominant energy condition holds in a weak sense. Through this procedure, …

Attitudes And Experiences In Liberal Arts Mathematics, Jennifer Clinkenbeard Jul 2015

Attitudes And Experiences In Liberal Arts Mathematics, Jennifer Clinkenbeard

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

For many university students, the last formal experience in a mathematics classroom is a single semester “general education” mathematics class. Traditionally, students in this type of class often hold negative attitudes towards mathematics. Here I study a sample of students from this population (49 students at a large, urban, comprehensive public university enrolled in a “math for liberal arts majors” course) to research whether a positive experience in a freshman-level general education mathematics course correlates with a positive change in the students’ attitude towards mathematics in general. I also explore which specific aspects of such a course contribute most to …

Euler Class Groups Of Polynomial And Sub Integral Extensions Of A Noetherian Ring., Md. Ali Zinna Dr.

Doctoral Theses

ObjectiveThe main objectives of this thesis are the following:(i) To investigate the behaviour of the Euler class groups under integral and subintegral extensions. More precisely, given a subintegral (or integral) extension R+ S of Noetherian rings, we are interested in finding out the relationship between the Euler class group of R and the Euler class group of S.(ii) To develop a theory (namely, an extension of the theory of Euler class group to the Euler class group of R[T) relative to a projective R[T|-module L of rank 1) in order to detect the precise obstruction for a projective R[T]-module P …

Teacher Beliefs And The Common Core State Standards For Mathematics, Erin M. Smith Jul 2015

Teacher Beliefs And The Common Core State Standards For Mathematics, Erin M. Smith

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

Widespread adoption of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) marks an unprecedented event in American education: nearly all students have an opportunity to learn the same mathematics content at the same stage of their K-12 educational experience. One goal of the CCSSM is to promote mathematics educational equity and excellence through common, rigorous standards. However, common standards may not translate to a common learning experience for all students. Teachers’ mathematical beliefs act as filters through which new information is interpreted and dispositions toward actions taken in the classroom. This study examined this beliefspractice relationship by asking two questions: …

Course Proposal For A Mathematical Modeling Course In A High School Curriculum, Thomas P. Marlowe

Masters Essays

In the winter of 2015, I will be piloting a course on mathematical modeling at Hawken School, an independent high school in Gates Mills, OH. As I develop all elements of this course, such as lesson plans, assessments, and rubrics, I will be mindful of factors such as the newly adopted Common Core mathematics standards, the variety of student backgrounds in such a course, and how various mathematical societies and organizations such as SIAM, MAA, and COMAP can help in implementing it. However, there is one basic question driving my interest in and design of this course: “when am I …

Examining The Effects Of College Algebra On Students' Mathematical Dispositions, Kevin Lee Watson Jul 2015

Examining The Effects Of College Algebra On Students' Mathematical Dispositions, Kevin Lee Watson

Theses and Dissertations

As Mathematics Educators, we want to help our students not only develop a deep, conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts and processes, but also a positive disposition towards mathematics. Despite the importance of helping students develop a positive mathematical disposition, little research has been conducted examining how students' dispositions develop as they progress through their mathematical studies. In particular, the effects of college algebra on students' mathematical dispositions is not well understood. To examine the influence of college algebra on students' dispositions, students using two different college algebra curriculums were studied at Brigham Young University. Using a mathematical disposition survey, student …

Mathematics As A Gatekeeper To Engineering: Preliminary Findings From The Interview Data, Delean Tolbert, Monica Cardella

School of Engineering Education Graduate Student Series

Mathematics as a Gatekeeper to Engineering: Preliminary Findings from the Interview DataResearch suggests that students’ pre-college experience may support or hinder future success inengineering. The experiences that students have had with engineering may shape their perceptionof engineering curriculum at the college level. It may also cause cognitive and learningdissonance, when the ways that a student engaged with engineering activities at the pre-collegelevel do not align with the student’s experiences in the engineering classroom. At a largeMidwestern University with a unique first-year engineering program, first-year engineering andsenior mathematics, engineering, and design students were invited to participate in an openended design task. …
