From Mathmagicians To Mathematicians: Constructing Cognitive Understanding Over Trusting The Algorithm, Kathryn A. Gould Apr 2017

From Mathmagicians To Mathematicians: Constructing Cognitive Understanding Over Trusting The Algorithm, Kathryn A. Gould

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

This capstone posed the question: what theoretical basis and best practices should be used to guide instruction that develops fluency in conceptualizing and executing multiplication strategies over the arc of third grade? With its foundation in constructivist learning theory and steeped in the research of Thomas Carpenter et al.’s Cognitively Guided Instruction this curriculum design project guides educators towards instruction that puts the students’ experience with multiplication in the forefront. Leaving behind the method of direct instruction of multiplication facts and algorithms. Research presented will show the dangers of leaning too heavily on procedural fluency and will focus on what …

The Impact Of Math Talks On Student Achievement In Kindergarten, Emily Payan

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

The core goal of this study was to answer the question, How do daily math talks impact student achievement in kindergarten? Math talks were implemented daily in a Title I kindergarten classroom over a period of six weeks. The findings suggest that the use of math talks as an integral part of instruction positively impact student achievement. The average growth in the experimental group was an increase of 42% in the composite scores by the end of the study, compared to a 31% increase in the control group. The experimental group in this study started as a more emergent group …

A Rigorous Take On Randomness: Defining 1-Randomness Using Complexity, Measure Theory, And Martingales, Neil A. Dokurno Apr 2017

A Rigorous Take On Randomness: Defining 1-Randomness Using Complexity, Measure Theory, And Martingales, Neil A. Dokurno

Honors Scholar Theses

By flipping a coin repeatedly and recording the result, we can create a sequence that intuitively is random. This paper presents a formal definition of 1-randomness widely (but not universally) thought to capture this informal notion. The attempt builds on the success and spirit of work from the 20th century that formalized the notion of computability with Turing machines. We will begin by presenting some of the characteristics of Turing machines. With that background, we will first use universal prefix-free Kolmogorov complexity to characterize randomness. The exploration of complexity will involve a thorough proof of the KC Theorem and an …

Introduction: Gene-set analysis (GSA) is an approach using the results of single-marker genome-wide association studies when investigating pathways as a whole with respect to the genetic basis of a disease. Methods: We performed a meta-analysis of seven GSAs for lung cancer, applying the method META- GSA. Overall, the information taken from 11,365 cases and 22,505 controls from within the TRICL/ILCCO consortia was used to investigate a total of 234 pathways from the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) database. Results: META-GSA reveals the systemic lupus erythematosus KEGG pathway hsa05322 , driven by the gene region 6p21-22, as also …

Application Of Inverse Problems In Imaging, Xiaoyue Luo Mar 2017

Application Of Inverse Problems In Imaging, Xiaoyue Luo

Post-Grant Reports

In this project, we studied how to enhance image quality by denoising and deblurring a given image mathematically. We compared some existing state-of-the-art methods for image denoising and deblurring. We implemented the algorithms numerically using Matlab.

We studied the possibility of combining statistical analysis with the traditional image restoration methods including using wavelets and framelets and we derived some encouraging preliminary results.

My research student Alleta Maier gave a sequence of talks on the project including the Pacific Northwest Mathematical Association of America conference at Oregon State University in April, 2016; Linfield College Taylor Series in March, 2016, and Linfield …

Discourse-Based Instructional Strategies To Engage Middle School Students With Standards For Mathematical Practice, Sandra L. Cookson Mar 2017

Discourse-Based Instructional Strategies To Engage Middle School Students With Standards For Mathematical Practice, Sandra L. Cookson

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

Student achievement in mathematics is correlated with factors related to student engagement. Improving engagement has the potential to improve student achievement at the middle school level. The Common Core State Standards for Mathematics explicate eight specific Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMPs) that clarify the types of skills and learning dispositions associated with mathematical proficiency. The CCSS further urge teachers to engage students through pedagogical practices that provide opportunities to use the SMPs in increasingly complex ways. This study aims to identify how discourse is used as an instructional strategy to engage middle school mathematics students with the SMPs. Data was …

With over 400 units, between them covering almost 850 million acres of carefully preserved land, the National Park Service (NPS) acts as steward to the nation’s natural treasures. In the move to the Twenty-First century, the NPS faces numerous looming challenges, particularly those related to a rapidly changing climate. It was our task to strategize with the Service in addressing three such issues, leveraging our experience in mathematical modelling and data analysis to aid them in the quest to protect and to preserve.

The first problem under consideration was determining the risk associated with sea-level change for five different coastal …

There is a natural inclination for humanity to view the Earth as our steadfast, never-changing home. After all, it seems as permanent as the ground beneath our feet. However, nothing could be further from the truth, especially in today’s rapidly changing climes. Global temperatures are on the rise, and with them comes an increase in sea levels, wildfires, and hurricanes, three serious, expensive issues. Unfortunately for the National Park Service (NPS), who guard ninety-seven coastal units, coastlines are especially vulnerable to such problems. Thus, the NPS must take extra precautions and expenditures to maintain and protect them. With limited budget, …

Metaphors And Mathematical Identity: Math Is Like A Tornado In Kansas, Carmen M. Latterell, Janelle L. Wilson Feb 2017

Metaphors And Mathematical Identity: Math Is Like A Tornado In Kansas, Carmen M. Latterell, Janelle L. Wilson

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Mathematical identity is an individual’s concept of who he or she is mathematically. In this paper, metaphors for mathematics from elementary education majors are compared to metaphors created by secondary mathematics teaching majors. The analysis demonstrates a basic difference in the mathematical identity of the two groups, with the latter group having more holistic conceptions of mathematics than the first group. Elementary education majors describe mathematics as an ongoing struggle in which the mathematics is active, and they are the victims. The secondary teaching mathematics majors describe mathematics as an ongoing struggle in which they are active.

Developmental Markers Of Genetic Liability To Autism In Parents: A Longitudinal, Multigenerational Study, Molly Losh, Gary E. Martin, Michelle Lee, Jessica Klusek, John Sideris, Sheila Barron, Thomas Wassink

Faculty Publications

Genetic liability to autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be expressed in unaffected relatives through subclinical, genetically meaningful traits, or endophenotypes. This study aimed to identify developmental endophenotypes in parents of individuals with ASD by examining parents' childhood academic development over the school-age period. A cohort of 139 parents of individuals with ASD were studied, along with their children with ASD and 28 controls. Parents' childhood records in the domains of language, reading, and math were studied from grades K-12. Results indicated that relatively lower performance and slower development of skills (particularly language related skills), and an uneven rate of development …

Providing Open-Access Know How For Directors Of Quantitative And Mathematics Support Centers, Michael Schuckers, Mary B. O'Neill, Grace Coulombe

Numeracy

The purpose of this editorial is to introduce the quantitative literacy community to the newly published A Handbook for Directors of Quantitative and Mathematics Centers. QMaSCs (pronounced “Q-masks”) can be broadly defined as centers that have supporting students in quantitative fields of study as part of their mission. Some focus only on calculus or mathematics; others concentrate on numeracy or quantitative literacy, and some do all of that. A QMaSC may be embedded in a mathematics department, or part of a learning commons, or a stand-alone center. There are hundreds of these centers in the U.S. The new handbook, …

Classroom physical activity (PA) has been linked to a multitude of health andacademic benefits. However, due to barriers such as lack of time and resourcesmany teachers are not implementing classroom PA to the degree they would liketo. One innovative solution is to integrate classroom PA into academic concepts.Based on self-determination theory, this pilot study evaluated the effectivenessof a teacher-developed purposeful movement teaching strategy on PA, on-taskbehavior and academic achievement. Two third grade classrooms participated inthis pilot study, one acting as the comparison and the other working with theschool Physical Education teacher to develop the active lessons. The evaluationconsisted of accelerometers, …

Generalisation Through Noticing Structure In Algebraic Reasoning, L Day Jan 2017

Generalisation Through Noticing Structure In Algebraic Reasoning, L Day

Education Conference Papers

“Mathematicians see generalising as lying at the very heart of mathematics” (Mason, Graham & Johnston-Wilder, 2005, p.283). The Australian Curriculum: Mathematics develops number and algebra together as they complement each other. Developing number and algebra together provides opportunities for searching for patterns, conjecturing and generalising mathematical relationships. Further, it allows the focus to be on the process of mathematics and noticing the structure of arithmetic and our number system, rather than the product of arriving at a correct answer.

Founders, Feminists, And A Fascist -- Some Notable Women In The Missouri Section Of The Maa, Leon M. Hall

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the history of the Missouri Section of the MAA, some of the more interesting people who influenced the growth and development of the section through the years were and are women. In this chapter, we discuss the contributions of a few (certainly not all) of these women to the Missouri Section and mathematics as a whole, including Emily Kathryn Wyant (founder of KME), Margaret F. Willerding (who dealt with sexism in the 1940s), Maria Castellani (an official in Mussolini’s Italy before coming to America), and T. Christine Stevens (co-founder of Project NExT). Without them, and others like them, both …

Solitary Wave Solution Of Flat Surface Internal Geophysical Waves With Vorticity, Alan Compelli Jan 2017

Solitary Wave Solution Of Flat Surface Internal Geophysical Waves With Vorticity, Alan Compelli

Conference papers

A fluid system bounded by a flat bottom and a flat surface with an internal wave and depth-dependent current is con-sidered. The Hamiltonian of the system is presented and the dynamics of the system are discussed. A long-wave regime is then considered and extended to produce a KdV approximation. Finally, a solitary wave solution is obtained.
