A Mixed-Method Study Of One-To-One Mobile Technology Implementation In Math In A Rural Middle School, Maxie Nathan Deaton Jr

Education Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to examine the extent of one-to-one mobile technology implementation on student math achievement as measured by standardized test scores. A second focus was on the extent one-to-one mobile technology implementation has influenced teacher practices in math instruction. A final focus was on the extent that teacher lesson plans support or fail to support technology implementation. The setting for the study was a small rural middle school in the Upstate of South Carolina. The participants consisted of males and females from several ethnicities and socioeconomic classes. A parallel/simultaneous method was used for the study. …

Bounded Low And High Sets, Bernard A. Anderson, Barbara F. Csima, Karen Lange Jan 2017

Bounded Low And High Sets, Bernard A. Anderson, Barbara F. Csima, Karen Lange

Faculty Research and Scholarship

Anderson and Csima (Notre Dame J Form Log 55(2):245–264, 2014) defined a jump operator, the bounded jump, with respect to bounded Turing (or weak truth table) reducibility. They showed that the bounded jump is closely related to the Ershov hierarchy and that it satisfies an analogue of Shoenfield jump inversion. We show that there are high bounded low sets and low bounded high sets. Thus, the information coded in the bounded jump is quite different from that of the standard jump. We also consider whether the analogue of the Jump Theorem holds for the bounded jump: do we have A …

Z2-Orbifolds Of Affine Vertex Algebras And W-Algebras, Masoumah Abdullah Al-Ali Jan 2017

Z2-Orbifolds Of Affine Vertex Algebras And W-Algebras, Masoumah Abdullah Al-Ali

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Vertex algebras arose in conformal field theory and were first defined axiomatically by Borcherds in his famous proof of the Moonshine Conjecture in 1986. The orbifold construction is a standard way to construct new vertex algebras from old ones. Starting with a vertex algebra V and a group G of automorphisms, one considers the invariant subalgebra VG (called G-orbifold of V), and its extensions. For example, the Moonshine vertex algebra arises as an extension of the Z2-orbifold of the lattice vertex algebra associated to the Leech lattice.

In this thesis we consider two problems. First, …

Personalised Learning Framework For Enhancing Mathematics Ability, John Butler, Orla Cahill, Basel Magableh, Siobhan O'Regan Jan 2017

Personalised Learning Framework For Enhancing Mathematics Ability, John Butler, Orla Cahill, Basel Magableh, Siobhan O'Regan

Practitioner Research Projects

Mathematics is the cornerstone of many disciplines, including computer science, accounting and the sciences. However, over the past two decades in higher education institutes, it has become increasingly apparent that there is a decline in the basic numeracy skills of first year students entering third level programs (Tariq, 2002). This has been observed in numerous Irish institutes whereby unfortunately it can also be a huge impediment in student progression into second year. Research has shown that students are under-prepared for the challenges posed by third level mathematics (Hourigan & O’Donoghue, 2007). In addition, as lecturers we are not as informed …

Education Publications

Integrating computational thinking (CT) in teaching specific K-12 school curricular is a more recent development than teaching CT in university and college courses. In this article, we share some insights on teaching practices that support integrating introductory computational thinking activities with school curricular activities for middle grades students. We specifically reflect on the tools and materials to use when integrating computational thinking concepts and mathematics curricular concepts in grade 4-8 classrooms. In this paper, we refer to integration of computational thinking concepts and mathematics curricular concepts as CT and mathematics.

Derivative-Free Kalman Filter-Based Control Of Nonlinear Systems With Application To Transfemoral Prostheses, S. Mahmoud Moosavi Jan 2017

Derivative-Free Kalman Filter-Based Control Of Nonlinear Systems With Application To Transfemoral Prostheses, S. Mahmoud Moosavi

ETD Archive

Derivative-free Kalman filtering (DKF) for estimation-based control of a special class of nonlinear systems is presented. The method includes a standard Kalman filter for the estimation of both states and unknown inputs, and a nonlinear system that is transformed to controllable canonical state space form through feedback linearization (FL). A direct current (DC) motor with an input torque that is a nonlinear function of the state is considered as a case study for a nonlinear single-input-single-output (SISO) system. A three degree-of-freedom (DOF) robot / prosthesis system, which includes a robot that emulates human hip and thigh motion and a powered …

Reframing Mathematical Futures Ii Project: Development Of A Draft Learning Progression For Algebraic Reasoning, L Day, M Horne, M Stephens Jan 2017

Reframing Mathematical Futures Ii Project: Development Of A Draft Learning Progression For Algebraic Reasoning, L Day, M Horne, M Stephens

Education Conference Papers

Curriculum documents make a clear distinction between algebraic skills and algebraic reasoning, where the development of the former is far more readily articulated than the latter. While there are many studies of algebraic reasoning, these are usually topic specific and/or highly contextual. What are the big ideas of algebraic reasoning and is it possible to map their learning trajectory? This paper reports on the preliminary phase of a large national study in Australia which is designed to move beyond the hypothetical and to provide an evidence-based foundation for a learning progression. Using rich assessment tasks designed for middle years students …

Exploring The Experiences Of Learning Mathematics For A Child With Cancer: A Case Study, Elizabeth M. Bello Jan 2017

Exploring The Experiences Of Learning Mathematics For A Child With Cancer: A Case Study, Elizabeth M. Bello

Honors Undergraduate Theses

In this research report, I utilize interpretative phenomenological analysis (Smith, Flowers, & Larkin, 2009) to examine the mathematics education experiences of a child with cancer. Two qualitative interviews with a 13-year-old male patient with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and his mother were analyzed. Findings revealed several storylines or themes: living with cancer, environmental barriers, and mathematics in virtual school. Grade level mathematics, content knowledge, and delivery during treatment in comparison to the child’s healthy peers are also discussed.

The Impact Of After School Tutoring On Math Achievement: Perceptions Of African American Males And Those Who Teach Them, Eric L. Brown Jan 2017

The Impact Of After School Tutoring On Math Achievement: Perceptions Of African American Males And Those Who Teach Them, Eric L. Brown

Dissertations

Despite increases in overall academic achievement, African American males continue to struggle in the area of mathematics. Data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) indicates that eighth grade African American males had the lowest levels of mathematics success of all subgroups in 2013, with only 13% performing at or above the proficient performance level in math. An approach to increasing the academic achievement of African American males has been to provide extended learning time beyond the typical secondary education experience. After school programs are one such example. Many studies indicate that after school programs have had some positive …

Spectrally Similar Incommensurable 3-Manifolds, David Futer, Christian Millichap Jan 2017

Spectrally Similar Incommensurable 3-Manifolds, David Futer, Christian Millichap

Faculty Publications

Reid has asked whether hyperbolic manifolds with the same geodesic length spectrum must be commensurable. Building toward a negative answer to this question, we construct examples of hyperbolic 3–manifolds that share an arbitrarily large portion of the length spectrum but are not commensurable. More precisely, for every n ≫ 0, we construct a pair of incommensurable hyperbolic 3–manifolds Nn and Nµn whose volume is approximately n and whose length spectra agree up to length n.

Both Nn and Nµn are built by gluing two standard submanifolds along a complicated pseudo-Anosov map, ensuring that …

Mutations And Short Geodesics In Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds, Christian Millichap Jan 2017

Mutations And Short Geodesics In Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds, Christian Millichap

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we explicitly construct large classes of incommensurable hyperbolic knot complements with the same volume and the same initial (complex) length spectrum. Furthermore, we show that these knot complements are the only knot complements in their respective commensurability classes by analyzing their cusp shapes.

The knot complements in each class differ by a topological cut-and-paste operation known as mutation. Ruberman has shown that mutations of hyperelliptic surfaces inside hyperbolic 3-manifolds preserve volume. Here, we provide geometric and topological conditions under which such mutations also preserve the initial (complex) length spectrum. This work requires us to analyze when least …

A Study Of Fourth-Grade Students' Perceptions On Homework Environment And Academic Motivation In Mathematics, Stefanie Harmon

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The problem at an elementary school is teachers' lack of knowledge and information on the perceptions and motivation of students to complete independent mathematics homework. The purpose of this study was to identify students' perceptions regarding their homework environment and academic motivation in mathematics. The study's conceptual framework, attribution theory, supported the examination of drivers of motivation for participants related to homework completion. Guiding research questions, supported by Keller's ARCS model, focused on the identification of students' perceptions of homework attention, relevance, curiosity, satisfaction, and their preferred homework environment. This qualitative research study obtained data from semistructured interviews with 44 …

USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications

Increasing students' academic success in postsecondary endeavors is an important goal for both high school and college institutions today. However, the standards for high school graduation and college readiness are not well aligned, and successful transition from high school to college is problematic for many students, particularly in math. This article describes a P-16 collaborative effort to examine high school math achievement in relation to college math placement and how the results informed policies and practices in both organizations.

Math And Physics Activities, Maureen Miller, Hope Bragg, Christy Keefer Jan 2017

Math And Physics Activities, Maureen Miller, Hope Bragg, Christy Keefer

Integrated Math & Social Studies Lessons

Mathematics is at the core of the Hidden Figures story. These women were united by their passion for the field of mathematics. Society often portrays that there are “bad” math students, those that struggle with calculations and applications. The structure of these activities, pairing of students, permits students to support each other in working through the problems. The video clip allows students to establish connections between mathematical calculations and scientific concepts. The physics problems that students complete are motion problems that beginning rocket engineers would have solved to determine how high their rocket flew.

Give Me A Formula Not The Concept! Student Preference To Mathematical Problem Solving, Manveer Mann, Mary C. Enderson

Department of Marketing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Purpose of Study: The purpose of this study was to assess student preference for procedural (formula-driven) versus conceptual (concept-driven) approaches to solve mathematical problems. Additionally, we evaluated differences in preferences among students who performed above average and those who performed at or below average on simple arithmetic problems. Methods/Design and Sample: We used a single-factor (Instructional Approach: conceptual vs. procedural) between-subjects experiment. Instructional approach was manipulated using short embedded instructional videos. Students evaluated each approach on a five-point scale. Results: We found that students (above-average and average/below-average) preferred the procedural approach to the conceptual approach. Interestingly, however, although students preferred …

Therapeutic Breathing Techniques And Disparity Across Student Performance In English And Mathematics, Abha Gupta, Shana Pribesh, Norou Diawara Jan 2017

Therapeutic Breathing Techniques And Disparity Across Student Performance In English And Mathematics, Abha Gupta, Shana Pribesh, Norou Diawara

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications

This paper explores possible correlation between Therapeutic Breathing Techniques (TBT) and improved academic performance of low achieving students in elementary school. The intervention consisted of daily breathing exercises combining two forms of TBT, namely, deep breathing and alternate nostril breathing. A semester-long quantitative study with 85 second graders was conducted to investigate the impact of above intervention on English and mathematics scores. Following one semester of intervention, the gaps between the low and high achievers had narrowed and small but significant gain-scores were found for the low achievers who had practiced TBT. In contrast, in first and third grades, where …

Using The Placebo Effect As A Potential Mediator For Stereotype Threat, Nicholas Denney Jan 2017

Using The Placebo Effect As A Potential Mediator For Stereotype Threat, Nicholas Denney

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Previous research suggests that the placebo effect — the tendency for people to improve following a sham treatment — is pervasive in many contexts: people who expect to get better typically do regardless of the malady. Similarly, stereotype threat — the tendency for members of minority groups to demonstrate performance impairment when confronted with the stereotype — is also pervasive. While both phenomena are well-established and robust, no previous research has examined whether placebo can be used to limit the effect of stereotype threat. The present study seeks to do just that. By priming women in a laboratory setting to …

The Relationships Between Parent Involvement And Reading And Mathematics Achievement For Students With Disabilities : An Analysis Of Ecls 1998-99 Data, Brian K. Bellair Jan 2017

The Relationships Between Parent Involvement And Reading And Mathematics Achievement For Students With Disabilities : An Analysis Of Ecls 1998-99 Data, Brian K. Bellair

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Parent involvement in education has long been viewed as a pathway to increased student achievement. Although much research exists with regard to this topic, little examines this relationship specifically for students with disabilities in grades 1-5 despite being required by both the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Representing nearly 13% of the school-age population demands a more in-depth examination of the potential for parent involvement to impact the achievement of an already disadvantaged subgroup. This study uses the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study 1998-99 (ECLS) publicly available data set to investigate the …

Mathematics Discourse And Its Relationship To The Development Of Collective And Individual Student Knowledge In The Context Of Limits, Patterson Rogers Jan 2017

Mathematics Discourse And Its Relationship To The Development Of Collective And Individual Student Knowledge In The Context Of Limits, Patterson Rogers

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Observing a group discussion, it is not possible to infer an individual student’s understanding from the dialogue. When students discuss, they share their individual ideas to develop a collective understanding which in turn informs students’ individual understanding. Clarifying the relationship between collective and individual understanding provides insight into how individuals construct mathematical thinking. This study presented an embedded case study to answer three questions regarding the role discourse plays in student development of mathematical knowledge: (1) how individual students construct mathematical knowledge through discourse, (2) the nature of discourse which supports the development of mathematical knowledge, and (3) the relationship …

A Beurling Theorem For Noncommutative Hardy Spaces Associated With A Semifinite Von Neumann Algebra With Various Norms, Lauren Beth Meitzler Sager Jan 2017

A Beurling Theorem For Noncommutative Hardy Spaces Associated With A Semifinite Von Neumann Algebra With Various Norms, Lauren Beth Meitzler Sager

Doctoral Dissertations

We prove Beurling-type theorems for H-invariant spaces in relation to a semifinite von Neu-mann algebra M with a semifinite, faithful, normal tracial weight τ, using an extension of Arveson’s non-commutative Hardy space H-. First we prove a Beurling-Blecher-Labuschagne theorem for H-invariant subspaces of L p (M,τ) when 0 < p ≤ -. We also prove a Beurling-Chen-Hadwin-Shen theorem for H -invariant subspaces of L a (M,τ) where a is a unitarily invariant, locally k 1 -dominating, mutually continuous norm with respect to &\tau;. For a crossed product of a von Neumann algebra M by an action β, M o β Z, we are able to completely characterize all H-invariant subspaces of L a (Mo β Z,t) using our results. As an example, we completely characterize all H-invariant subspaces of the Schatten p-class, S p (H) (0 < p ≤ -), where H - is the lower tri-angular subalgebra of B(H). We also characterize the non-commutative Hardy space H -invariant subspaces in a Banach function space I(τ) on a semifinite von Neumann algebra M.

A Dynamical-Systems Approach To Understanding Turbulence In Plane Couette Flow, Mimi Szeto Jan 2017

A Dynamical-Systems Approach To Understanding Turbulence In Plane Couette Flow, Mimi Szeto

Doctoral Dissertations

Dynamical systems theory is used to understand the dynamics of low-dimensional spatio-temporal chaos. Our research aimed to apply the theory to understanding turbulent fluid flows, which could be thought of as spatio-temporal chaos in a very-high dimensional space. The theory explains a system's dynamics in terms of the local dynamics of its periodic solutions; these are the periodic orbits in state space. We considered the development of a model for the dynamics of plane Couette flow based on the theory. The proposed model is essentially a set of low-dimensional models for the local dynamics of the periodic orbits of the …
