Quantifying Surface Morphology Of Manufactured Activated Carbon And The Waste Coffee Grounds Using The Getis-Ord-Gi* Statistic And Ripley’S K Function, Sanghoon Lee, Sukjoon Na, Olivia G. Rogers, Sungmin Youn
All Engineering Faculty Research
Activated carbon can be manufactured from waste coffee grounds via physical and/or chemical activation processes. However, challenges remain to quantify the differences in surface morphology between manufactured activated carbon granules and the waste coffee grounds. This paper presents a novel quantitative method to determine the quality of the physical and chemical activation processes performed in the presence of intensity inhomogeneity and identify surface characteristics of manufactured activated carbon granules and the waste coffee grounds. The spatial density was calculated by the Getis-Ord-Gi* statistic in scanning electron microscopy images. The spatial characteristics were determined by analyzing Ripley’s K function and complete …
The Relationship Between The Use Of Curriculum Materials And Inquiry-Based Pedagogy, Laura Jo Elzinga
The Relationship Between The Use Of Curriculum Materials And Inquiry-Based Pedagogy, Laura Jo Elzinga
Theses and Dissertations
Little change has resulted from decades of attempts at reforming the teaching of mathematics (Davis et al., 1990). This study involved approximately 43 teachers who had completed an inquiry-based professional development program prior to being provided with a new mathematics curriculum designed to support inquiry-based teaching. It analyzed the relationships between their implementation of the inquiry-based teaching and their use of the curriculum materials. A series of bivariate correlations were run to investigate the relationships between the professional development and aspects related to the implementation of the new curriculum. The factors being so inter-related, it was hypothesized that relationships would …
Metacognition In A Mathematics Classroom, Paige Murta
Metacognition In A Mathematics Classroom, Paige Murta
Honors Projects
The purpose of this action research study is to explore the connections between students’ ability to engage in metacognitive methods, their understanding of mathematical content, and their mathematical performance. By having a group of students engage in a lesson about metacognition and a mathematical modeling problem then comparing their test scores to that of a control group a correlation can be found to analyze the effects of metacognition methods in a mathematics classroom.

Notes On The Circulation Of Epistemic Images, Nina Samuel
Notes On The Circulation Of Epistemic Images, Nina Samuel
Artl@s Bulletin
Three cases of image circulation in the sciences, two from complex dynamics and one from microscopy, are discussed. The article deals with failed circulations, suspected errors, interdisciplinary communication, notebooks of scientists, the role of media shifts, mathematics and materiality, human perception, pictorial norms and conventions. It analyses how images circulate through different thought collectives and visual cultures. All three examples show different strategies of how images that break with visual traditions have been reintegrated into epistemic circulations and become “boundary objects” that are both robust and flexible.

Examining Middle School Students' Methods Of Justification, Leslie Reyes- Hernandez
Examining Middle School Students' Methods Of Justification, Leslie Reyes- Hernandez
Mathematics
Researching students’ thinking is imperative to improving the education system throughout the world. From extensive research, it is noted that students are unaccustomed and struggle with providing valid mathematical justifications (e.g. Inglis & Alcock 2012). The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM, 2000) and Common Core State Standards of Mathematics (CCSSM, 2010) suggest that students should have several opportunities to construct mathematical arguments across all grade levels. To take a closer look at this educational phenomenon, we prompt fifth to eighth-grade students with nine mathematical tasks. Within our research, we focus on tasks based on number properties, algebraic thinking, …
Well-Distributed Sequences: Number Theory, Optimal Transport, And Potential Theory, Louis Max Brown
Well-Distributed Sequences: Number Theory, Optimal Transport, And Potential Theory, Louis Max Brown
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation will be to examine various ways of measuring how uniformly distributed a sequence of points on compact manifolds and finite combinatorial graphs can be, providing bounds and novel explicit algorithms to pick extremely uniform points, as well as connecting disparate branches of mathematics such as Number Theory and Optimal Transport. Chapter 1 sets the stage by introducing some of the fundamental ideas and results that will be used consistently throughout the thesis: we develop and establish Weyl's Theorem, the definition of discrepancy, LeVeque's Inequality, the Erdős-Turán Inequality, Koksma-Hlawka Inequality, and Schmidt's Theorem about Irregularities of …
Construction Of The Universal Second Motivic Chern Class Using Cluster Varieties, Oleksii Kislinskyi
Construction Of The Universal Second Motivic Chern Class Using Cluster Varieties, Oleksii Kislinskyi
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Denote by $B\Gamma$ the classifying space of an algebraic group $\Gamma(\mathbb{C})$. In this thesis we will take Milnor's realization of it -- the classifying simplicial space $B_{\Gamma\bullet}$. Consider the weight two motivic complex $ \mathbb{Z}_{\mathcal{M}}(2)$ for a regular algebraic variety $X$, placed in degrees $[1,4]$: $$ B_2(\mathbb{C}(X)) \to \bigwedge^2 \mathbb{C}(X)^* \to \bigoplus\limits_{D\in div(X)}\mathbb{C}(D)^* \to \bigoplus\limits_{D\in cod_2( X)}\mathbb{Z}.$$ Let $G$ be a split semisimple simply connected algebraic group over $\mathbb{Q}$. Then the degree 4 cohomology $H^4(B_{G\bullet}, \mathbb{Z}_{\mathcal{M}}(2))$ is known to be isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}$. This can be deduced, for example, from the main result of Brylinski and Deligne \cite{BD}, although they …
Dynamics Of Unipotent Subgroups On Infinite Volume Space, Minju Lee
Dynamics Of Unipotent Subgroups On Infinite Volume Space, Minju Lee
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
This thesis consists of five separate projects. They are organized into the following sections: 1. Orbit closures of unipotent flows for hyperbolic manifolds with Fuchsian ends. In joint work with Oh, we establish an analogue of Ratner's orbit closure theorem for any connected closed subgroup generated by unipotent elements in $\mathrm{SO}(d, 1)$ acting on the space $\Gamma\backslash\mathrm{SO}(d, 1)$, assuming that the associated hyperbolic manifold $M=\Gamma\backslash\mathbb H^d$ is a convex cocompact manifold with Fuchsian ends. 2. Topological proof of Benoist-Quint. Let $G=\mathrm{SO}^\circ(d,1)$, $\Delta
Three Families Of Lie Algebras Of Exponential Growth From Vertex Operator Algebras, Gabriel Legros
Three Families Of Lie Algebras Of Exponential Growth From Vertex Operator Algebras, Gabriel Legros
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
We study three families of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras defined from Vertex Operator Algebras and their properties. For $N=0$ VOAs, we review the construction of the Fock space $V_L$ from an even lattice $L$ and provide an algebraic description of the Lie algebra $g_{II_{25,1}}$ from the perspective of $24$ different Niemeier lattices $N$ via the decomposition $II_{25,1} = N \oplus II_{1,1}$ using the no-ghost theorem. For $N=1$ SVOAs we review the construction of the Fock space $V_{NS}$ and provide an explicit basis for the spectrum-generating algebra of the Lie algebra $g_{NS}$. For $N=2$ SVOAs, we describe the structure of $g^{(2)}_{NS}$ explicitly …
On The Galois Action On Motivic Fundamental Groups Of Punctured Elliptic And Rational Curves, Nikolay Malkin
On The Galois Action On Motivic Fundamental Groups Of Punctured Elliptic And Rational Curves, Nikolay Malkin
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
The main motive of this thesis is to study the action of the motivic Galois group on the motivic fundamental group of an algebraic curve X punctured at a finite set of points. The algebraic, geometric, and analytic aspects of this action are examined in two cases: for X=P1 and for X an elliptic curve. To study this action, we rely on motivic correlators, canonical elements in the fundamental Lie coalgebra of the category of mixed motives over a number field. We trace three themes: (1) The Lie coalgebra structure on the motivic correlators. Using combinatorial arguments with an injection …

Quantifying Eco-Friendliness Of Plastic, Paper, And Reusable Bags, Leah Ryan
Honors Projects in Science and Technology
The plight of the consumer in regards to making eco-conscious decisions is growing as concerns regarding the environment increase. This study was conducted in an effort to give consumers a tool to combat some of this issue and compare the types of shopping bags they use in terms of eco-friendliness. Research conducted in this avenue thus far contains convoluted conclusions, all made with consideration of some variables, but not all. This purpose of this study therefore lay in trying to give consumers a standardized tool to compare bag types that considered variables across all stages of a bags’ life (pre-use, …

Millennials' Retirement Struggle: The Interaction Between Student Loans, Financial Decisions, And Financial Literacy., Rebecca Michaud
Honors Projects in Finance
As millennials grow older and begin their careers in the workforce, saving for retirement begins to become an important part of spending. This paper analyzes a variety of factors and challenges that impact an individual’s retirement savings. This thesis ultimately looks to determine whether the driving force for the general inadequacy of retirement savings is student loan debt, financial decision making, or both. Through both research and survey responses, this thesis will also look at whether a public policy that removes a certain percentage of student loan repayment obligations will have any impact on the amount that young workers are …

Biplanar Crossing Numbers Of Bipartite Graphs, Sydney Miyasaki
Biplanar Crossing Numbers Of Bipartite Graphs, Sydney Miyasaki
Senior Theses
The goal of this thesis is to compute upper and lower bounds on the biplanar crossing numbers of complete bipartite graphs. The concept of a biplanar crossing number was first introduced by Owens (Owens 1971) as an optimization problem in circuit design. To prove upper bounds, we follow a method used by Czabarka et. al. (Czabarka et. al. 2006), in which they start from an optimal drawing of a small bipartite graph and use it to generate drawings of larger bipartite graphs. We explore several possibilities for computing lower bounds. One is using Ramsey theory, via the Bipartite Ramsey Number …

A Mathematical Model Of Pancreatic Cancer Growth And Response To Treatment, Allison Cruikshank
A Mathematical Model Of Pancreatic Cancer Growth And Response To Treatment, Allison Cruikshank
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Pancreatic cancer is one of the leading causes of death due to cancer in the United States. Analyzing the effects of radiation is extremely valuable in determining when a patient is allowed surgical resection, which is, presently, the only potentially curative treatment for pancreatic cancer. This study examines pancreatic tumor growth and shrinkage to predict tumor response and change of resectability for pancreatic cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy. This is done using ordinary differential equations as a mathematical model. Mathematical models have increasingly been applied to various biological systems/processes to analyze the principles involved. In our project, a population dynamical …

Real-World Learning In Middle School Mathematics, Elizabeth Ackerson
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
My research question for my capstone project is: How does incorporating real-world word problems into weekly math curriculum in middle school affect students' learning, engagement, and understanding? I have created a math word problem curriculum, “Word Problem Wednesday”, to be used in my own math classroom to create real-world learning opportunities through problem-solving. I teach 5th-grade math, and I have noticed a lack of understanding of word problems related to problem-solving in the classroom. The curriculum I have developed is based on the need for a curriculum where word problems are purposefully incorporated weekly with meaning while creating understanding. Every …

Cognitively Guided Instruction Strategies For Strengthening Fifth-Grade Students Understanding Of Fraction Concepts, Hao Li
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
An area in mathematics critical for building mathematical knowledge and reasoning is developing children's foundational knowledge of fractions. Understanding fractions is also a building block for developing students' algebraic reasoning and sense-making (NMAP, 2008;) It is very common to see in fifth-grade math classroom there are students who think fraction concepts and procedures seem to have no link to one another and for whom meaning-making in fractions is a challenge (Pitsolantis & Osana, 2013). Therefore, how to design math activities that will increase fifth-grade students' understanding of fraction concepts emerged as research question for this capstone project. History of learning …
Raising The Awareness Of Somali Families: The Positive Impact Of Dual Language Education On Student Success, Khaleef Warsame
Raising The Awareness Of Somali Families: The Positive Impact Of Dual Language Education On Student Success, Khaleef Warsame
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Studies have found that dual language education is powerful for all learners and particularly essential for the success of first- and second-generation immigrant learners in the United States. The learning model enhances students’ academic achievement, school participation, and healthy identity development. Students proficient in both their heritage language and culture and their new homeland’s dominant culture and language are also more likely to gain higher upward mobility and enjoy advanced cognitive development. While the benefits of dual language education (DLE) are explicitly illustrated in the literature, there are currently no Somali dual language programs found to be existing in Minnesota …
Toxic Math-Masculinity: Changing Harmful Lay Theories Of Mathematics To Improve Student Achievement, Zac Kamm
Toxic Math-Masculinity: Changing Harmful Lay Theories Of Mathematics To Improve Student Achievement, Zac Kamm
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Students often come into the secondary math classroom with an implicit understanding of mathematics that negatively affects their performance in the classroom. These lay theories often reinforce an entity theory of mathematical ability that views ability as fixed and unchangeable. In turn, this view of mathematical ability influences students’ goal orientations. Research shows the positive benefits of an incremental theory of mathematical ability and a mastery goal orientation on mathematics student achievement. Much of the research literature focuses on describing or quantifying the connection between incremental theories of mathematical ability and student achievement rather than describing effective strategies for changing …
Increase Enrollment Of Underrepresented Students In Advanced Mathematics Classes: A School Improvement Plan, Sarah Dougherty
Increase Enrollment Of Underrepresented Students In Advanced Mathematics Classes: A School Improvement Plan, Sarah Dougherty
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Providing minority students with the opportunity to engage in advanced mathematics courses affords them access to more engaging learning opportunities, increased motivational beliefs towards mathematics, and potentially higher future earnings dependent on the career they pursue. Examining the present enrollment statistics in math courses at the research site, the need to transform the enrollment in advanced math courses to represent the school population demographics is revealed. In response, a school improvement plan was developed using research-based initiatives. This plan includes teaching a mixture of advanced and non-advanced math courses, teachers advising non-AP and non-IB students to enroll in advanced math …
Squigonometry, Andrew Hatfield, Riley Klette, Christopher Moore, Beth Warden
Squigonometry, Andrew Hatfield, Riley Klette, Christopher Moore, Beth Warden
Mathematics
Trigonometry is the study of circular functions - functions defined on the unit circle where distances are measured with respect to the Euclidean norm. In our research, we develop a parallel theory of trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions for the p-norm. This is called squigonometry because the resulting functions are defined on a squircle. This approach leads to new transcendental periods, formulas, and identities. It also extends to exponential, hyperbolic, and logarithmic functions in the p-norm.
Developing Motivation Of Adolescent Mathematics Students Through Instructional Choice, Todd K. Hunter
Developing Motivation Of Adolescent Mathematics Students Through Instructional Choice, Todd K. Hunter
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Maintaining student motivation in mathematics increases the likelihood of long-term academic success. A key component to building motivation is having perceived control over a task. Students who maintain perceived control exhibit greater task engagement, motivation, and exhibit lower levels of stress and anxiety in that task (Bandura, 1989; Schunk, 2012; Skinner, 1990). This six-week study investigated the relationship between student choice and motivation in mathematics instruction, by affording students an individual choice of their instructor in their mathematics course. A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest two group design was implemented using a sample of Integrated Mathematics II high school students. Student motivation to …
