Identifying Performance Regression From The Commit Phase Utilizing Machine Learning Techniques, Max Mendelson
Identifying Performance Regression From The Commit Phase Utilizing Machine Learning Techniques, Max Mendelson
Theses
Over the lifespan of a software application, it is inevitable that changes to the source code will be made that causes unintended slowdowns in functionality. These slowdowns are referred to as performance regression. Typically projects who are particularly concerned about performance have performance testing that are run to identify if a performance regression is introduced into the code. This is difficult however due to how time consuming and resource intensive running performance tests are when trying to simulate a realistic scenario.
The study of De Oliveira et. al. (Perphecy) [4] suggests a technique to predict the likelihood that a commit …
Behavioral Model Anomaly Detection In Automatic Identification Systems (Ais), Jacob Coleman
Behavioral Model Anomaly Detection In Automatic Identification Systems (Ais), Jacob Coleman
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Over 90% of all goods in the world, at some point in their life, are on a vessel at sea. Currently, the maritime industry relies on the Automatic Identification System (AIS) for collision avoidance and vessel tracking. AIS is an unencrypted, unauthenticated protocol that is vulnerable to various types of cyber attacks allowing malicious actors to alter the location of vessels. With the advent of the Ocean of Things (OoT), vessels are sharing more information than vessel location alone at sea. Increasingly, more information is becoming critical for safe and efficient operation at sea. This method is a novel approach …
Applications Of Machine Learning In High-Frequency Trade Direction Classification, Jared E. Hansen
Applications Of Machine Learning In High-Frequency Trade Direction Classification, Jared E. Hansen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The correct assignment of trades as buyer-initiated or seller-initiated is paramount in many quantitative finance studies. Simple decision rule methods have been used for signing trades since many data sets available to researchers do not include the sign of each trade executed. By utilizing these decision rule methods, as well as engineering new variables from available data, we have demonstrated that machine learning models outperform prior methods for accurately signing trades as buys and sells, achieving state-of-the-art results. The best model developed was 4.5 percentage points more accurate than older methods when predicting onto unseen data. Since finance and economics …

Software Composition Analysis (SCA) has gained traction in recent years with a number of commercial offerings from various companies. SCA involves vulnerability curation process where a group of security researchers, using various data sources, populate a database of open-source library vulnerabilities, which is used by a scanner to inform the end users of vulnerable libraries used by their applications. One of the data sources used is the National Vulnerability Database (NVD). The key challenge faced by the security researchers here is in figuring out which libraries are related to each of the reported vulnerability in NVD. In this article, we …

Meaning In The Noise: Neural Signal Variability In Major Depressive Disorder, Sally M. Pessin
Meaning In The Noise: Neural Signal Variability In Major Depressive Disorder, Sally M. Pessin
Theses
Clinical research has revealed aberrant activity and connectivity in default mode (DMN), frontoparietal (FPN), and salience (SN) network regions in major depressive disorder (MDD). Recent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies suggest that variability in brain activity, or blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signal variability, may be an important novel predictor of psychopathology. However, to our knowledge, no studies have yet determined the relationship between resting-state BOLD signal variability and MDD nor applied BOLD signal variability features to the classification of MDD history using machine learning (ML). Thus, the current study had three aims: (i) to investigate the differences …

Background: Classification algorithms assign observations to groups based on patterns in data. The machine-learning community have developed myriad classification algorithms, which are used in diverse life science research domains. Algorithm choice can affect classification accuracy dramatically, so it is crucial that researchers optimize the choice of which algorithm(s) to apply in a given research domain on the basis of empirical evidence. In benchmark studies, multiple algorithms are applied to multiple datasets, and the researcher examines overall trends. In addition, the researcher may evaluate multiple hyperparameter combinations for each algorithm and use feature selection to reduce data dimensionality. Although software implementations …
Allosteric Control Of Proteins: New Methods And Mechanisms, Nalvi Duro
Allosteric Control Of Proteins: New Methods And Mechanisms, Nalvi Duro
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Allostery describes the phenomenon where perturbations in one region of a protein affect protein behavior in another non-overlapping region. Considerable efforts made over decades to understand the molecular basis of allostery, yet an overarching theory that can predict signaling pathways and contributions from chemical components is still lacking. In fact, molecular details in even the most well-studied of model systems, PDZ domains and GPCRs, remain unclear. In this dissertation I use molecular simulation methods to understand the role of allostery in the regulated entry of paramyxovirus into host cells, and also develop a new method to determine time-dependent signaling pathways …

Aircraft contrail emission is widely believed to be a contributing factor to global climate change. We have used machine learning techniques on images containing contrails in hopes of being able to identify those which contain contrails and those that do not. The developed algorithm processes data on contrail characteristics as captured by long-term image records. Images collected by the United States Deparment of Energy’s Atmospheric Radiation Management user facility(ARM) were used to train a deep convolutional neural network for the purpose of this contrail classification. The neural network model was trained with 1600 images taken by the Total Sky Imager(TSI) …
Stretching Human Laws To Apply To Machines: The Dangers Of A "Colorblind" Computer, Zach Harned, Hanna Wallach
Stretching Human Laws To Apply To Machines: The Dangers Of A "Colorblind" Computer, Zach Harned, Hanna Wallach
Florida State University Law Review
Automated decision-making has become widespread in recent years, largely due to advances in machine learning. As a result of this trend, machine learning systems are increasingly used to make decisions in high-stakes domains, such as employment or university admissions. The weightiness of these decisions has prompted the realization that, like humans, machines must also comply with the law. But human decision- making processes are quite different from automated decisionmaking processes, which creates a mismatch between laws and the decision makers to which they are intended to apply. In turn, this mismatch can lead to counterproductive outcomes. We take antidiscrimination laws …

Truck Trailer Classification Using Side-Fire Light Detection And Ranging (Lidar) Data, Olcay Sahin
Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Classification of vehicles into distinct groups is critical for many applications, including freight and commodity flow modeling, pavement management and design, tolling, air quality monitoring, and intelligent transportation systems. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) developed a standardized 13-category vehicle classification ruleset, which meets the needs of many traffic data user applications. However, some applications need high-resolution data for modeling and analysis. For example, the type of commodity being carried must be known in the freight modeling framework. Unfortunately, this information is not available at the state or metropolitan level, or it is expensive to obtain from current resources.
Nevertheless, using …
The Effects Of Mixed-Initiative Visualization Systems On Exploratory Data Analysis, Adam Kern
The Effects Of Mixed-Initiative Visualization Systems On Exploratory Data Analysis, Adam Kern
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
The main purpose of information visualization is to act as a window between a user and data. Historically, this has been accomplished via a single-agent framework: the only decisionmaker in the relationship between visualization system and analyst is the analyst herself. Yet this framework arose not from first principles, but from necessity: prior to this decade, computers were limited in their decision-making capabilities, especially in the face of large, complex datasets and visualization systems. This thesis aims to present the design and evaluation of a mixed-initiative system that aids the user in handling large, complex datasets and dense visualization systems. …

Many recent developments in machine learning have come from the field of “deep learning,” or the use of advanced neural network architectures and techniques. While these methods have produced state-of-the-art results and dominated research focus in many fields, such as image classification and natural language processing, they have not gained as much ground over standard multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) techniques in the classification of electroencephalography (EEG) or other human neuroscience datasets. The high dimensionality and large amounts of noise present in EEG data, coupled with the relatively low number of examples (trials) that can be reasonably obtained from a sample …

Using a unique data set from Seeking Alpha, we compare the deep learning approach with traditional machine learning approaches in classifying financial text. We apply the long short-term memory (LSTM) as the deep learning method and Naive Bayes, SVM, Logistic Regression, XGBoost as the traditional machine learning approaches. The results suggest that the LSTM model outperforms the conventional machine learning methods on all metrics. Based on the tSNE graph, the success of the LSTM model is partially explained as the high-accuracy LSTM model distinguishes between positive and negative important sentiment words while those words are chosen based on SHAP values …

Theses and Dissertations
Event-based cameras are a novel type of visual sensor that operate under a unique paradigm, providing asynchronous data on the log-level changes in light intensity for individual pixels. This hardware-level approach to change detection allows these cameras to achieve ultra-wide dynamic range and high temporal resolution. Furthermore, the advent of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) has led to state-of-the-art navigation solutions that now rival or even surpass human engineered algorithms. The advantages offered by event cameras and CNNs make them excellent tools for visual odometry (VO). This document presents the implementation of a CNN trained to detect and describe features within …

In the graph classification problem, given is a family of graphs and a group of different categories, and we aim to classify all the graphs (of the family) into the given categories. Earlier approaches, such as graph kernels and graph embedding techniques have focused on extracting certain features by processing the entire graph. However, real world graphs are complex and noisy and these traditional approaches are computationally intensive. With the introduction of the deep learning framework, there have been numerous attempts to create more efficient classification approaches. We modify a kernel graph convolutional neural network approach, that extracts subgraphs (patches) …
Using Logical Specifications For Multi-Objective Reinforcement Learning, Kolby Nottingham
Using Logical Specifications For Multi-Objective Reinforcement Learning, Kolby Nottingham
Undergraduate Honors Theses
In the multi-objective reinforcement learning (MORL) paradigm, the relative importance of environment objectives is often unknown prior to training, so agents must learn to specialize their behavior to optimize different combinations of environment objectives that are specified post-training. These are typically linear combinations, so the agent is effectively parameterized by a weight vector that describes how to balance competing environment objectives. However, we show that behaviors can be successfully specified and learned by much more expressive non-linear logical specifications. We test our agent in several environments with various objectives and show that it can generalize to many never-before-seen specifications.

Undergraduate Honors Theses
Parkinson’s Disease is a degenerative neurological condition that affects approximately 10 million people globally. Because there is currently no cure, there is a strong motivation for research into improved and automated diagnostic procedures. Using Random Forests, a computer can effectively learn to diagnose Parkinson’s disease in a patient with high accuracy (94%), precision (95%), and recall (91%) across the data of over 2800 patients. Using similar techniques, I further determine that the most predictive medical tests relate to tremors observed in patients.

Machine Learning (ML) is rapidly becoming integrated in critical aspects of cybersecurity today, particularly in the area of network intrusion/anomaly detection. However, ML techniques require large volumes of data to be effective. The available data is a critical aspect of the ML process for training, classification, and testing purposes. One solution to the problem is to generate synthetic data that is realistic. With the application of ML to this area, one promising application is the use of ML to perform the data generation. With the ability to generate synthetic data comes the need to evaluate the “realness” of the generated …

Decisions made during the high-stress and fast-paced operations of the military are extremely prone to cognitive biases. A commonly known cognitive bias is a confirmation bias, or the inappropriate bolstering of an unknown hypothesis. One such critical military operation that can fall prey to a confirmation bias is a visual search. During a visual search, a military operator must perform a visual scan of an environment for a specific target. However, the visual search process can fall prey to the same confirmation bias which can cause inefficient searches. This study elicits inefficient visual search patterns and applies various mitigation techniques …
