Shifts In Narrative Voices In Four Novels Of Emilia Pardo Bazan., Kizzie Anita Gowin Jan 1981

Shifts In Narrative Voices In Four Novels Of Emilia Pardo Bazan., Kizzie Anita Gowin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The narrative voices in Los pazos de Ulloa (1886), La madre Naturaleza (1887), La Quimera (1905), and La sirena negra (1908) by Emilia Pardo Bazan were studied. The analysis revealed that the author primarily employed omniscient narration in Los pazos de Ulloa and La madre Naturaleza. She used the relatively new narrative techniques of free indirect style and interior monologue when she wished to present the innermost thoughts of the characters in these two naturalistic novels. Pardo Bazan continued using the narrative techniques of the two earlier novels in La Quimera. However, she employed first-person narration more frequently and extensively …

The Heroic Plot In Epic And Romance: A Study Of The Monster-Fight Motif From "Beowulf" To The "Faerie Queene", Feroza Rustom Vaghaiwalla Jan 1981

The Heroic Plot In Epic And Romance: A Study Of The Monster-Fight Motif From "Beowulf" To The "Faerie Queene", Feroza Rustom Vaghaiwalla

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on the Heroic Plot or the hero-monster conflict as it appears in five major works: Beowulf, Tristan, Yvain, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and Book One of The Faerie Queene. It traces the survival of this motif from its archetypal deployment in epic song through its various forms in the romance narratives to its ultimate metamorphosis in Christian allegory.

The Heroic Plot is central in Beowulf where heroism is defined in purely physical terms. The monsters are treated seriously as superhuman creatures which must be destroyed in physical combat, and the conflicts are described in vivid …

William Faulkner And Aviation: The Man And The Myth, Walter Ingersoll Bostwick Jan 1981

William Faulkner And Aviation: The Man And The Myth, Walter Ingersoll Bostwick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1980 - 1989

In the years following World War I, William Faulkner implied to his family and acquaintances that he had been a pilot in the RAF. Some people even thought that he had flown combat missions in France and had been wounded. He maintained this fictitious persona throughout his life, and it was accepted by most scholars and biographers. Several of Faulkner's early works featured aviators as central characters, and he treated them as romanticized, tragic heroes as he did Confederate cavalry officers. Pylon, which was written after he had actually started flying, reflects an awareness of the psychology of flying not …

The Unfleshed Eye: A Study Of Intellectual Theism In The Poetry And Criticism Of Yvor Winters., John Martin Finlay Jan 1980

The Unfleshed Eye: A Study Of Intellectual Theism In The Poetry And Criticism Of Yvor Winters., John Martin Finlay

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Yvor Winters' early poetry, from 1920 to 1928, was written in free-verse; the aesthetic principles governing it centered on the image "purified" of conceptual content, and consisting of a "fusion" between the natural object being described and the poet's own mind. The result is a kind of naturalistic mysticism, destructive of judgements and evaluations of the conscious intellect. The early poetry also registers the effect of certain scientific theories on Winters' mind; these theories were mechanistic and deterministic in nature, and they turned Winters' world into one in which moral and intellectual values had no reality. Other themes that appear …

Sir Thomas More, Humanist And Hero: A Man For All Ages., Noel Joseph Toups Jan 1980

Sir Thomas More, Humanist And Hero: A Man For All Ages., Noel Joseph Toups

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Thomas More has appeared in diverse works from the sixteenth to twentieth century; these works have usually treated him as a model of integrity and conscience whose love of truth made him a touchstone for judging a panoply of others. More's own century viewed him in conflicting ways. Tudor apologists--Hall, Holinshed, and Foxe--were critical of More's wit and treatment of heretics and deemed him prideful, whereas the recusants like Roper and Harpsfield pictured More loyal Londoner, devoted father, humanist, and man of conscience. Sixteenth century treatments culminate in those of Ro. Ba. and Munday. Munday's Thomas More, an essentially Protestant …

Jack London's South Sea Narratives., David Allison Moreland Jan 1980

Jack London's South Sea Narratives., David Allison Moreland

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Although Jack London is recognized as one of the most popular American fiction writers in the world, critics of American literary naturalism have tended to rank him considerably below the other well-known naturalists: Frank Norris, Stephen Crane, and Theodore Dreiser. The consensus has been that London wrote too much, too hastily, and weakened his art by imposing "ideas" (Darwinian, Spencerian, Nietzschean, Marxian) upon his narratives. However, in recent years a serious reevaluation of "the boy wonder of the naturalist carnival" has begun. As a master of the action narrative, Jack London, who both mirrored his age and anticipated later twentieth-century …

With Ground Teeth: A Study Of Flannery O'Connor's Women., Mary Lambert Morton Jan 1980

With Ground Teeth: A Study Of Flannery O'Connor's Women., Mary Lambert Morton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Eighteen of Flannery O'Connor's short stories feature women as protagonists or antagonists. Of the remaining thirteen stories in the canon, four are assimilated into her novel Wise Blood. This study, then, encompasses the entire O'Connor canon with the exceptions of the novel The Violent Bear It Away and eight short stories, since one of the remaining nine stories is a part of The Violent Bear It Away. The majority, then, of O'Connor's short stories feature women in leading roles. Even those in supporting roles seem prominent. With the women in Wise Blood, they dramatize O'Connor's special vision of comedy and …

Pincher Martin': Symbolism Serving Fable., Dianne Lucille Braley Runion Jan 1980

Pincher Martin': Symbolism Serving Fable., Dianne Lucille Braley Runion

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

All three of Golding’s first novels make dark comment on what they show, but of the treem Pincher Martin, ostensibly the darkest, offers the most hope. Although “the protagonist’s particular history of guilt and greed is intended to stand as a fable for contemporary man,” man (and Pincher) could choose not to turn away from God. That choice, however, demands faith or vision. If, as Baker points out, “the final chapters intentionally contradict the reality shown in the narrative - and thus expose the fallibility of the rational point of view,” they also morally direct the reader’s vision, helping him …

Pound's Use Of Merlin As Persona In The 'Rock Drill Cantos', Caryl J. North Jan 1980

Pound's Use Of Merlin As Persona In The 'Rock Drill Cantos', Caryl J. North

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Ezra Pound wrote Cantos 85 to 95, Section: Rock Drill, while imprisoned in St. Elizabeth’s, a mental hospital in Washington, D.C. This section was first published in 1956, to be followed by the final Cantos (95-109) in 1958. The source for the title Rock Drill was an abstract sculpture cast in gunmetal by Sir Jacob Epstein as part of the Vorticist exhibition of 1915. In Pound’s eyes, this sculpture provided “a central metaphor,... [signifying] his own constant effort to drive home the ideas upon which the right kind of society rests.” In fact, Wyndham Lewis wrote a review of Pound’s …

"Julia" Characterization In The Plays Of Lillian Hellman, Kathleen T. Bell Jan 1980

"Julia" Characterization In The Plays Of Lillian Hellman, Kathleen T. Bell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1980 - 1989

The Julia character, as depicted in the essay in Pentimento, provides a character model for Lillian Hellman's plays. Julia's strength of personal responsibility provides Hellman a measure by which her characters succeed or fail, a criterion upon which personal worth is judged. Julia's strength, compassion, and personal responsibility are depicted in varying degrees in the characters created in Watch on the Rhine, The Children's Hour, The Little Foxes, Another Part of the Forest, The Searching Wind, and The Autumn Garden. As reflected in the plays, Julia is Hellman's model, her ideal; she is the vehicle for Hellman's strong personal and …

Representative Mormon Short Stories 1890 To 1940: Evolution Of Sentimentalism Toward Realism, Alice Gardner Jan 1979

Representative Mormon Short Stories 1890 To 1940: Evolution Of Sentimentalism Toward Realism, Alice Gardner

Theses and Dissertations

Previously, no one has analyzed the short stories of Mormon periodicals from their inception in the late nineteenth century until 1940. The body of this study attempts to do so and has two main aims.

First, it evaluates the literary development of largely sentimental stories written for Mormon youth. Sentimentality in fiction was an extreme form of romanticism which flourished in America throughout the nineteenth century and into the twentieth century. As other forms of realistic writing became more acceptable in the nation, Mormon writers gradually accommodated their literary styles to conform with national trends. They retained a significant amount …
