Existentialism In Shirley Jackson's Last Novels, Guy A. Argenziano
Existentialism In Shirley Jackson's Last Novels, Guy A. Argenziano
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1980 - 1989
The existential philosophy of the post-war period is reflected in Shirley Jackson's last novels. The Sundial mirrors the anguish and intellectual alienation of a family trying to come to terms with the annihilation of their world. The Hunting of Hill House deals with the forlornness and emotional alienation that result from the discovery that man is completely alone because there is no God. We Have Always Lived in a Castle is concerned with the psychological alienation and despair that arise from the realization that the potential for happiness is limited by man's self-destructive tendencies. Examined together, these novels present an …
Two Wise Men In Quartet. Eliot And Santayana: The Search For Faith, Jackie Ward Barnes
Two Wise Men In Quartet. Eliot And Santayana: The Search For Faith, Jackie Ward Barnes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1980 - 1989
Santayana's thought underlies much of Eliot's poetry. Both Eliot and Santayana were skeptics, and Eliot's skepticism is documented in the quartets, a work that is a personal journal of his search for faith. That search was to be an unsuccessful one, for Eliot realized the impossibility of union with the Absolute. The symbolism of the rosegarden, the bedded axle-tree, the still point, and the clematis, when analyzed, demonstrates Eliot's concept of a clockwork universe, a universe that is unknowing and uncaring. Eliot reaches that concept, basically, because of Santayana's influence.
Nothing More Real Than Nothing: The Unnamable As Self-Annihilating Fiction, Shawn Rosenheim
Nothing More Real Than Nothing: The Unnamable As Self-Annihilating Fiction, Shawn Rosenheim
Honors Papers
Nature abhors nothing; it is the mind which cannot bear to live in a state of suspension, in absence, in a vacuum. The very existence of fiction testifies to man's need for intricate models through which he may fashion and explore his life. In the last eighty years, a great deal of research has been devoted to discovering the ways in which fictions are structured; the ways, that is, in which literature replaces chaos not with content, but with form; with elaborate verbal webs that hold in abeyance the hollow of life without language. Russian formalism, mythcriticism like Northrop Frye's, …

T S Eliot's Shakespeare Criticism, Discovery And Advance, Sudhakar Marathe
T S Eliot's Shakespeare Criticism, Discovery And Advance, Sudhakar Marathe
Digitized Theses
There is a crucial gap in Eliot studies: although he contributed considerably to Shakespearean criticism, Eliot's ideas on the place of Shakespeare in the tradition of English literature and his uniqueness, have been neglected. Among other reasons, the scattered nature of much of Eliot's commentary on Shakespeare is responsible for this gap. Eliot wrote about Shakespeare throughout his career, in various contexts, usefully and illuminatingly. This study presents, in the first chapter, those parts of Eliot's literary criticism which concern Shakespeare. Special substantial appendices provide valuable information in this respect which has been brought together for the first time, and …
Tracing The Thread: The Image Of The Labyrinth In Selected Novels By Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens And Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, David Philip Gates
Tracing The Thread: The Image Of The Labyrinth In Selected Novels By Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens And Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, David Philip Gates
Digitized Theses
This thesis will explore the image of the labyrinth and its use as a metaphor for the theme of ritual initiation in selected novels by Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens, and Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. In terms of its mythic interpretation, an aspect which as yet has not been examined at length by critics of Victorian fiction, the labyrinth or maze has significance beyond its Gothic and urban associations. Chapter One looks at the use of the image in the settings of several novels, the London of Oliver Twist, The Old Curiosity Shop, Barnaby Rudge, and Bleak House, and the labyrinthine …
A New Edition Of The Worchester "Soul's Address To The Body", Douglas Alexander Moffat
A New Edition Of The Worchester "Soul's Address To The Body", Douglas Alexander Moffat
Digitized Theses
The thesis is a new edition of the "Soul's Address to the Body," a poem from the period of transition between Old and Middle English that exists uniquely in Worcester Cathedral MS. F. 174. The MS. dates from either the late twelfth or early thirteenth century; the "Soul's Address" itself is generally dated to the early part of the twelfth century. The MS. presents many problems for the editor. It was disassembled, probably late in the medieval period, and its leaves were trimmed and used as stiffening in another bookbinding. It was not reassembled until the early nineteenth century.;The introductory …

Schizophrenia And Creative Archetypes As Shown In Works By Thomas Bernhard., Karen Appaline Moseley
Schizophrenia And Creative Archetypes As Shown In Works By Thomas Bernhard., Karen Appaline Moseley
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Thomas Bernhard's work remains controversial after more than twenty years of critical acclaim. Attempts to interpret his work according to traditional literary standards have generated as many questions as answers. Anneliese Botond believes Bernhard's work cannot be understood only through literary analysis, and Gudrun Mauch proposes that Jungian archetypes are present in his autobiographical novels. Critics agree, however, that Bernhard portrays mad protagonists in a seemingly insane world. The present study analyzes schizophrenia, myth, and the creative process in Bernhard's work to propose purpose for his descriptions of madness. This study also addresses questions posed by J. de Cort, who …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This bibliography contains primary and secondary bibliographical material relating to Robert Bridges (1844-1930), Poet Laureate of England from 1913 until his death in 1930. The first chapter contains all known editions of Bridges' poems and plays, and includes his editions of hymns. The second chapter is devoted to Bridges' prose writings, and the third chapter collects for the first time the reviews, articles, essays, books, and other scholarly notes about Bridges. The third chapter also incorporates anthologies which include Bridge's poetry. In the life, work, and critical reception of Robert Bridges there seem always to be two opposite influences or …
"The Forgeries Of Jealousy": Shakespeare's Cuckoldry, Ronald Leo St. Pierre
"The Forgeries Of Jealousy": Shakespeare's Cuckoldry, Ronald Leo St. Pierre
Doctoral Dissertations
Cuckoldry is a complex of terms, ideas, injunctions and stereotypes attached to the notion that a wife's infidelity transformed her husband into a horned beast called a "cuckold." This complex, or lore of cuckoldry, was not merely a literary tradition but a popular conception which was beneficial to the medieval family structure with its wide kinship bonds and relatively cold husband-wife relationships. During Shakespeare's time, however, the family was changing, placing a greater stress on mutual society and paternal authority in such a way as to be incompatible with traditional cuckoldry. Consequently during the English Renaissance, literary treatments of cuckoldry …
The Comic Dimension: A New Reading Of William Carlos Williams' Long Poem "Paterson", Kathleen Douglas Matthews
The Comic Dimension: A New Reading Of William Carlos Williams' Long Poem "Paterson", Kathleen Douglas Matthews
Doctoral Dissertations
When Williams decided in the early forties to accelerate work on the "magnum opus" he had begun fifteen years earlier, his ambitions were enormous, yet the literary establishment treated him more like a pygmy than a giant. T. S. Eliot, reigning literary pontiff, embraced the European literary tradition and ignored Williams as he had for years while Pound used Italy as a base for the economic and political tirades which eventually had him condemned as a traitor. In his long poem Paterson, Williams felt abandoned with the momentous task of discovering a poetics to fit the American idiom. His poem …

Sufism, Monica Ontiveros
Sufism, Monica Ontiveros
Whittier Scholars Program
I was first introduced to Sufism after reading poems by Sufis like Hakim Jami and Jalaludin Rumi. After reading their poetry, I began exploring the possibility of what connection, if any, existed between the Sufi poets and western poets. The relevant material pertaining to this possible connection is scarce. Thus, I have expanded the topic of this paper to exploring the possible connections between Sufism and some selected pieces of western literature. Since western literature encompasses a broad area, I have limited my search to authors I feel I am most familiar with. I have divided this study into three …

The Reader In The Text: Essays On Audience And Interpretation [Review], Michael Fischer
English Faculty Research
The Reader in the Text is a useful collection of essays on an important topic in contemporary criticism—the role of readers in interpreting literary works. Contributors include some of the most widely-read writers on the subject (Jonathan Culler, Wolfgang Iser, Gerald Prince, Norman Holland) as well as several critics less familiar to American readers (Jacques Leenhardt and Karlheinz Stierle, among many others). Susan Suleiman adds a helpful introduction on the "varieties of audience-oriented criticism" and Inge Crosman provides an annotated bibliography.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this study was to test whether the computer-administered College Level Examination Program (CLEP) General Examination in English Composition produced scores equivalent to those obtained from the traditional paper-and-pencil version. The CLEP examination and its adaptation for computer administration and the results of a pilot study are presented.
The subjects in this study were volunteers who took the CLEP English Composition Examination in order to earn college credit and were randomly assigned to either the computer-first or paper-and-pencil-first groups. Each subject took both forms of the examination with approximately one half of the subjects taking each version first. …

The Female Archetypes In Swinburne's Early Work, 1857-1871., Betty Moss Duffy
The Female Archetypes In Swinburne's Early Work, 1857-1871., Betty Moss Duffy
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
From "Queen Yseult," 1857, to "Hertha" of Songs before Sunrise, 1871, three archetypes--the femme fatale, the Terrible Mother, and the androgyne--dominate Swinburne's poems, dramas, and novels. These archetypes project the dominant artistic conflict of the Victorian period, the controversy over the function of art and the role of the artist, for they symbolize the psychological and cultural conflict between the doctrine of art for art's sake and its antithesis, art for morality's sake. The femme fatale becomes a symbol of art and beauty, the goal of the artist-androgyne's aesthetic quest. Her masochistic lover strives to possess beauty in the form …
Developing Theological Patterns In John Milton's Poetry., Terri Rae Mckinney
Developing Theological Patterns In John Milton's Poetry., Terri Rae Mckinney
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A study of John Milton's poetry reveals a pattern of developing theological concepts which in his later years result in unorthodox theological positions: ex Deo creation, mortalism, antitrinitarianism. This theology exists within the structure of free will and rests on the concept of God as Logos. Such theological conclusions as are voiced in Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained reflect Milton's vision of man's relationship to God, the nature of God and God's creation, the nature of Sin, and the means whereby man may be saved. Although unorthodox in the mainstream of seventeenth century English Protestantism on a number of doctrinal …
The Forgiving Landscape: The Poetry Of William Stafford., Malovika Mukerji
The Forgiving Landscape: The Poetry Of William Stafford., Malovika Mukerji
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
There is a wholeness and a sanity in William Stafford's vision that arises out of his allegiance to the authentic elements of our experience. These elements include the vital but continually imperiled wilderness, the human landscape of the past comprised of family, friends, and lovers, and the eternal and inescapable rhythms of time, death, mutability, and terror. In his own words, Stafford is seeking to embody in his work "the unanalyzed impressions of holiness" that the world thrusts at him. By temperament and by choice, Stafford is alienated from the so-called confessional school of poetry. Instead, he writes in the …

Origen Y Desarrollo De La Oda En La Literatura Peninsular E Hispanoamericana. (Spanish Text)., Jose Ramon Miranda
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Indigenism And Feminism In The Prose Fiction Of Rosario Castellanos., George Alexander St. John Robinson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The novel of Indian concern has had a long vogue in Latin America, where it is known alternately as novela indianista or novela indigenista. This tradition in the novel has produced such well known works as Lopez y Fuentes' El indio, Alcides Arguedas' Raza de bronce, Jorge Icaza's Huasipungo and Ciro Alegr(')ia's El mundo es ancho y ajeno, all published between 1919 and 1941. These novels seek to illustrate the deplorable conditions of life in Indian communities from Mexico to Bolivia. In so doing, however, the Indian characters of these novels are generally reduced to single dimensional characters devoid of …

"Like Little Paul In Person, Voice, And Grace": A Comparative Study Of Edward Taylor And St. Paul., Phill Warren Parmer
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study examines correlations between the writings of Edward Taylor and St. Paul to understand more precisely the influence that Taylor's particular theology exercised upon his poetry. Chapter I is an introduction to Taylor and the Puritan debt to Paulinism. A brief sketch of Taylor biography and scholarship precedes a discussion of Reformation and Puritan use of the Pauline epistles. A synopsis of the Pauline paradigm of salvation (man in sin--grace through Christ--man "in Christ") is presented. Chapter II, "Old Adam and the Old Covenant," explores St. Paul's and Taylor's concepts of the Creation, Man's Fall in Adam, Original Sin, …

Remarque's 'Weltanschauung': A Study In Fictional Dualism., Ingrid Ehrmann Gross
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The objective of this study was to examine Remarque's Weltanschauung as expressed through his novels. Remarque sees the world negatively when he regards it as a whole. This all-encompassing world, the macrocosm, is defined by two basic factors: the evil side of man's nature, and the existence of death. The world, as Remarque views it, is not ruled according to a divine plan but is a world of man's own making. Because man has been unable to keep in check his tendencies for committing evil, he has brought about the events which characterize the first half of the twentieth century: …
