Cross-Functional Teams In Defense Reform: Help Or Hindrance?, Christopher J. Lamb Aug 2016

Cross-Functional Teams In Defense Reform: Help Or Hindrance?, Christopher J. Lamb

Strategic Forums

On May 12, 2016, the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) announced its markup of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for fiscal year 2017. Committee chairman John McCain (RAZ) stated that the bill “contains the most sweeping reforms of the organization of the Department of Defense [DOD] in a generation.” The House Armed Services Committee version of the NDAA contained fewer reforms, but the committee emphasized that reform was necessary because “security challenges have become more transregional, multi-domain, and multi-functional. . . . U.S. superiority in key warfighting areas is at risk with other nations’ technological advances; and . . …

Enabling Solutions: Pacers Toolkit Tackles The Wicked Problems Of Bullying In Healthcare, Rita K. Adeniran Jul 2016

Enabling Solutions: Pacers Toolkit Tackles The Wicked Problems Of Bullying In Healthcare, Rita K. Adeniran

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on Friday, July 22, 2016:

Background: Historically, strategies to eliminate bullying and create respectful, civil, supportive, and safe environments have largely centered on individuals, while ignoring the broader context of its occurrence that includes influences from interpersonal, community, environmental and policy sources. Theory and research establishes bullying as a complex interplay of influences between individuals and their broader environments. Bullying is a group phenomenon, reciprocally influenced by the individual, peers, the immediate environment/institution, community and/or society. Human behaviors are not isolated events; they are linked with and influenced by other behaviors and social norms. Evidence suggests organizational factors …

Without question, as the quality of individual faculty members' leadership ability increases, so does their satisfaction and retention as academicians. Moreover, informed leadership …

Book Review Of: Harvard Business Review's 10 Must Reads: On Leadership, Nadya Chishty-Mujahid Jul 2016

Book Review Of: Harvard Business Review's 10 Must Reads: On Leadership, Nadya Chishty-Mujahid

Business Review

It is eminently refreshing to have a prestigious and elite institution such as Harvard University take the trouble to sift through numerous articles of past HBR issues and come up with a compendium that comes across as both engaging and useful. The HBR Press has done this for a number of sub-disciplines of the field of Management, such as ‘Strategy’ and ‘Change,’ for example. However, ‘Leadership’ in view of the challenges it poses can claim the honor of being in a league of its own. The compendium, in spite of its relatively short length, manages to cover a staggering variety …

A Comparison Of Managerial And Leadership Effectiveness Of Veteran And Civilian Developed Leaders In A Civilian Context, John C. Dexter Jul 2016

A Comparison Of Managerial And Leadership Effectiveness Of Veteran And Civilian Developed Leaders In A Civilian Context, John C. Dexter

Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations

Since the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, there has been an increase in American patriotism that has facilitated a strong commitment of U.S. employers to actively recruit and hire military veterans. These highly publicized employer veteran hiring commitments easily number in the hundreds of thousands, if not millions. However, the commitments to employ veterans does not specify how these veterans will be employed. In fact, there is wide-spread difficulty in translating military training and experience to civilian applications, and there is virtually no empirical support as to whether veterans will be more of less successful in civilian employment than …

The Effects Of Is-Bao Implementation And Leadership Performance On Safety Culture In Business Aviation Flight Operations, Christopher Mark Broyhill Jul 2016

The Effects Of Is-Bao Implementation And Leadership Performance On Safety Culture In Business Aviation Flight Operations, Christopher Mark Broyhill

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The International Standard, Business Aircraft Operations (IS-BAO), with a Safety Management System (SMS) as its core element, has been widely accepted by both the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the business aviation industry as the mechanism to create a healthy safety culture among the business aviation operators who have implemented the standard. Scholarly literature, however, has presented leadership as the most important factor in the creation and management of a healthy safety culture in organizations in general and aviation organizations in particular. This study examined and compared the effects of IS-BAO progression and leadership performance on the perceptions of …

Examining Attitudes, Norms, And Control Toward Safety Behaviors As Mediators In The Leadership-Safety Motivation Relationship, Gargi Sawhney Jul 2016

Examining Attitudes, Norms, And Control Toward Safety Behaviors As Mediators In The Leadership-Safety Motivation Relationship, Gargi Sawhney

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Research on occupational safety has been on the rise in recent years, owing to the high rates of deaths and disabilities that occur in the workplace. Findings suggest that unsafe behaviors and work-related accidents and injuries can be reduced through increasing employee safety motivation. Additional research has recognized leadership as a source of employee safety motivation. However, most studies have empirically assessed safety motivation and its antecedents using a cross-sectional design. Therefore, the aims of the current study were to examine effects of various safety-specific leader behaviors, following the full-range leadership model, on safety motivation using a time-lagged study design. …

"I'M Sure He Didn't Mean It That Way": The Influence Of Leader Characteristics On Perceptions Of Everyday Sexism, Samantha M. Smith

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to investigate the ability of organizational leaders to facilitate the experience of everyday sexism in the workplace by influencing individual perceptions and acceptance of sexist behaviors. Rationale for hypotheses is presented under a social information processing framework. Social and organizational consequences of leader likability and idiosyncrasy credits are also discussed. It was hypothesized that particular leader characteristics (e.g., leader likability) and individual differences (gender identification and stigma consciousness) impact perceptions of bias. Female MTurk workers viewed a video of a female employee describing her male supervisor in a 2 (Leader Likability: high vs. low) …

The Influence Of Team Prosocial Motivation On Emergent States And Shared Leadership, Tyree David Mitchell Jun 2016

The Influence Of Team Prosocial Motivation On Emergent States And Shared Leadership, Tyree David Mitchell

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Despite the growing body of research on shared leadership, relatively little is known about the antecedents of shared leadership. The following study examined the effects of team prosocial motivation on team emergent states (i.e., team empowerment, psychological safety) and shared leadership. Drawing on motivational theories (e.g., self-determination theory), it was hypothesized that team empowerment and psychological safety would mediate the relationship between team prosocial motivation and shared leadership. Also, in line with the social identity and self-categorization perspectives, it was hypothesized that team surface-level diversity (racial diversity, gender diversity, faultline strength) would moderate the effects of team prosocial motivation on …

The Importance Of Leadership: An Investigation Of Effects Of Transformational Leadership On Middle School Students Intrinsic Motivation And Expectancy-Value In Physical Education, Minhyun Kim

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

The leadership practices exhibited by physical education teachers have been found to have a significant impact on promoting students learning. The main purpose of this study was to explore: (a) differences on middle school students' perception regarding expectancy-value and intrinsic motivation according to their grade, gender, and ethnicity, (b) the relationship between physical education teachers' transformational leadership and middle school students' expectancy-value and intrinsic motivation. To conduct this study, three questionnaires were employed: transformational teaching questionnaire (Beauchamp et al., 2010), expectancy-value questionnaire (Duncan & Tammen, 1989), and intrinsic motivation index (Eccles & Wigfield, 1995). A total of 295 middle school …

The Influence Of Job-Embedded Professional Learning And Leadership On School Professional Culture, Zachary A. Leonard Jun 2016

The Influence Of Job-Embedded Professional Learning And Leadership On School Professional Culture, Zachary A. Leonard

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Educational leaders are increasingly facing low student achievement and engagement, low teacher morale, and more rigorous standards that require greater teacher preparation and professional development. There is overwhelming evidence from the literature on successful school systems that restructuring schools to make time for job-embedded professional learning (JEPL) with a relentless focus on continuous improvement will not only improve student learning and achievement but also improve school professional culture. Despite such near-universal agreement among educational scholars and practitioners alike, we see very little professional learning in U.S. schools. The absence of professional learning in schools provides a compelling need to understand …

Evaluating The Predictive Validity Of The Global Competencies Inventory For Determining Global Leadership Outcomes, Emily Tuyet Le

Master's Theses

Due to trends in globalization, there has been an accelerated growth in the number of global organizations. This has caused the demand for global leaders to far exceed the number of qualified individuals, leading organizations to search for ways to identify individuals who will be successful global leaders. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the predictive value of one of the few validated tools for measuring global leadership, the Global Competencies Inventory (GCI). The sample consisted of 433 undergraduate and graduate students at a large public university, who were measured across three major global leadership dimensions. Correlations were …

Australian Catholic Schools Today: School Identity And Leadership Formation, Helga Neidhart Phd, Janeen T. Lamb Phd

Journal of Catholic Education

This article focuses on the challenge of faith leadership in Catholic schools. In particular, it reviews Australian research that aims to understand how principals conceptualize and enact their role as faith leaders. Consistent with American research, Australian research finds that principals see themselves as playing a leadership role in the evangelizing mission of the church by strengthening Catholic school identity and culture. At the same time, they are mindful of their limits in respect to their faith leadership capabilities. Moreover, the principals worried that the next generation of school leaders may lack the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to engage faith …

Social Dynamics Of Leadership: Is There Value In Considering Multi-Source Feedback Ratings From A Social Relations Model Perspective?, Andrea M. Bizarro May 2016

Social Dynamics Of Leadership: Is There Value In Considering Multi-Source Feedback Ratings From A Social Relations Model Perspective?, Andrea M. Bizarro

Doctoral Dissertations

The present study challenges conventional use of multi-source feedback (MSF) assessment data for both leader differentiation and leader development purposes in a real organizational setting. Leadership theory was considered from an individual differences as well as a relational process perspective to investigate whether conventional MSF scoring provides adequate information regarding social processes of leadership, and whether analyzing MSF data with the Social Relations Model (SRM) provides better insights into relational processes of leadership and leader self-awareness. Application of item response theory indicated that MSF assessment items do not provide sufficient differentiation among average and above-average ability leaders. Furthermore, analysis of …

Predictors Of Participation And The Effects Of Undergraduates' Involvement In A First-Year Emerging Leadership Program, Brent Aaron Papson May 2016

Predictors Of Participation And The Effects Of Undergraduates' Involvement In A First-Year Emerging Leadership Program, Brent Aaron Papson

Master’s Theses

Greater involvement has been linked to higher satisfaction rates in students' experiences (Astin, 1993b), and the greater the level of a student's social and academic involvement has been linked to the greater likelihood for persistence (Tinto, 1975). Involvement in educationally purposeful activities during the first year of college had a statistically significant effect on student persistence from first to sophomore year (Kuh, Cruce, Shoup, Kinzie, & Gonyea, 2008). Educationally purposeful activities, such as a leadership program developing socially responsible leadership, has been found to influence persistence from first to sophomore year (Wolniak, Mayhew, & Engberg, 2012). The purpose of the …

Organizational Leadership And Work-Life Integration: Insights From Three Generations Of Men, Deborah N. Smith, Deborah B. Roebuck, Terri Elhaddaoui

Faculty Articles

The literature has traditionally portrayed work-life balance as a women’s issue. However, working men, specifically those classified as Generation X and Generation Y, are starting to speak up and share that they too are struggling with integrating all aspects of their lives. Workers, as well as organizations can benefit when employees have a healthy work-life balance; however, the specific role of organizational leadership must be examined to determine the influence leaders play in assisting employees achieve work-life balance. In addition, further insight is needed to understand how employees in the three generations (Millennials/Gen Y, Gen X, and Baby Boomers), which …

Optimizing Workforce Performance: Perceived Differences Of Army Officer Critical Thinking Talent Across Level Of Education, Richard B. Ayers May 2016

Optimizing Workforce Performance: Perceived Differences Of Army Officer Critical Thinking Talent Across Level Of Education, Richard B. Ayers

Dissertations

The U.S. Army’s operating environment continues to become increasingly complex and unpredictable, where U.S. technological advantage continues to erode. The complexities stem from the Army’s doctrinal assumption that the future operating environment is unknown and constantly changing (Department of the Army [DA], 2014a). Diminishing technological advantage results in more reliance on soldiers’ cognitive capability, and less on high technology weapons systems (McMaster, 2015).

A review of military literature shows extensive research on the importance of Army leaders to be talented critical thinkers (Fischer, Spiker, & Riedel, 2008, 2009; Gerras, 2008; Thomas & Gentzler, 2013). Human capital literature reveals many college …

An Examination Of Leader-Member Exchange And Team Effectiveness, Brooke B. Allison May 2016

An Examination Of Leader-Member Exchange And Team Effectiveness, Brooke B. Allison

All Dissertations

Previous research has indicated the importance of leader-member exchange (LMX) relationships for organizational team effectiveness (e.g., Boies & Howell, 2006; Hooper & Martin, 2008). However, few studies have examined the complexity of this relationship empirically, nor examined how leader differentiation of LMX, a main tenet of LMX theory, may affect vital team processes and emergent states required for successful team performance. The current study developed and tested a model of the relations between LMX, perceived LMX variability, team behavioral processes, and emergent affective states on team effectiveness. Individuals representing 66 university research teams from a medium-sized university participated in the …

Educational Studies Dissertations

This in-country grounded theory study examined the lived experiences of 24 Chinese returnees who completed advanced degrees in the United States. The study found that the four types of organizations in mainland China determine the social context of the application of Western education of the Chinese returnees. Returnees working in multinational corporations apply their Western education more than the returnees working in the other types of organizations. Themes that revolved around the international educational experiences of the Chinese students, including the development of cultural intelligence and new understanding of the ‘other’, and their realization of the differences between their home …
