Highly mobile children who move at least four to five times during their PK-12 grade years generally experience greater difficulty in their social interactions and education than children with a more stable living experience. One specific group of highly mobile children, military children, face these challenges and more, due somewhat to the unique culture of the military. Military children are called upon to move across state lines and/or international borders and typically face multiple school absences and stress related to deployments of their active duty parent(s). Pennsylvania Occupational Therapy Fieldwork Educator Practices And Preferences In Clinical Education, Kaitlyn Ryan, Melanie Beck, Lee Ungaretta, Magdalena Rooney, Elaina Dalomba, Leamor Kahanov

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

The shortage of clinical education fieldwork sites coupled with a concern over the quality of the required fieldwork experience poses an unintended outcome for the recent changes in the health care system and an increasing number of occupational therapy students. While the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) issues standards for fieldwork education, the quality of the experience is known to vary. The present study employed a mixed methods concurrent nested design with a quantitative online survey alongside qualitative individual semi-structured online interviews to examine the practices and preferences of fieldwork educators in Pennsylvania ACOTE accredited programs. From the …

How The Workplace Adopts Stereotypical Male Leadership Roles, Shelby Graves Jan 2018

How The Workplace Adopts Stereotypical Male Leadership Roles, Shelby Graves

Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-

Traditionally, women have not held many leadership positions in the workplace. This is typically due to the existence of gender-based stereotypes. These stereotypes hurt women in both their psyche and in their wallet by limiting their opportunities for advancement into top level executive positions. The glass ceiling, a barrier many women have come to face in Corporate America, has caused many women to accept their fate as “lesser than” when compared to their male colleagues. Very few women have been successful in breaking the glass ceiling. Some modern organizations have taken on the challenge of ridding their culture of these …

The curriculum aims to improve communication, conflict resolution, decision-making, and time management skills using role-play, reflection, and feedback from direct observation. Expected challenges are developing appropriate instructors and time constraints. Curriculum creators will collect evaluations from participants and qualitative feedback to continually improve the …

An Investigation Of The Characteristics Successful Executive Directors Perceive To Be Most Important In Charter Schools, Jeremy Wayne Quick

Education Dissertations and Projects

This study was a multiple case study to explore the phenomenon of the charter school executive director and the characteristics needed for success. The executive director characteristics directly affect the success or failure of a charter school (Berman, 2008). A variety of studies have researched the skill sets needed for successful leadership in several types of organizations; these skill sets overlap, and the research has revealed how these skills were interconnected. The evaluation of all these leadership skills helped define the skill set needed for successful charter school leaders and can be used by many stakeholders to improve upon current …

Leadership Practices In Similar Schools With Varying Primary Grade Reading Outcomes: A Comparative Multiple-Case Study, Jacqueline M. Cuthill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Students who are below grade level before they leave third grade are less likely to graduate. A large number of schools are failing to increase student achievement in reading, especially for students of color and those who are economically disadvantaged. Leadership can influence student achievement; however, literature lacks specifics about leadership practices that could help school leaders improve student outcomes. This multiple-case study explores the leadership practices in three similar elementary schools with varying primary grade reading outcomes and contributes details about the leadership functions of Setting Direction, Developing People and Redesigning the Organization (Leithwood, Seashore, Anderson, & Wahlstrom, 2004). …

Neurology Publications

Support group leaders play pivotal roles in maintaining healthy community support groups; however, these leaders also have personal support needs and typically lack formal training in managing complex behaviors of neurodegenerative disorders. A support group well-being questionnaire, assessing support group functioning, was developed and piloted among participants of an educational training program designed for support group leaders of various neurodegenerative disorder-specific support groups. An exploratory factor analysis evaluated the questionnaire’s psychometric properties and identified a reliable single factor five-item solution, which was titled the Support Group Functioning Scale (SGFS). Preliminary interpretation guidelines were proposed. Development of this scale is a …

Effective Leadership: Prior Research Vs. The Millennials, Marissa Heinzerling Jan 2018

Effective Leadership: Prior Research Vs. The Millennials, Marissa Heinzerling

Honors Program Theses

When the phrase “effective leadership” is heard, the first things most people think of are the leader’s traits and behaviors. However, most fail to consider the role that followers play in leadership. Leaders must adapt to their followers' needs, which do not always remain the same between generations and genders. As leaders throughout organizations strive to remain successful, they must understand how millennials differ in terms of what they consider to be an example of effective leadership. The existing research regarding leadership effectiveness has yet to consider the followers in the millennial generation. The following paper contains a literature review …

It's A Dangerous World In There: Leadership Methods And Actions Of School Administrators During Emergency Situations And Times Of Crisis, James J. Drake

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Over the past twenty years, shootings and other violent incidents, acts of terrorism such as the attacks of September 11, 2001, and natural disaster events such as hurricanes or floods have occurred with increasing frequency. Situations like these pose significant challenges for school administrators when a normally-peaceful educational environment is quickly transformed by significant acts of aggression from within, or by external threats that impact the educational domain with little or no advance warning.

Contingency-based, situational leadership has proven to be effective when used in both educational and non-educational settings during normal, non-emergency periods. The purpose of this study is …

Marketing Leadership In A Knowledge Economy, Myles Bassell, Sonia Lambert

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Often the most valuable assets of a marketing driven firm are intangible assets such as a brand name, intellectual capital, and the expertise and knowledge of employees. The new breed of marketing leaders understand that it is important for employees to collaborate and be engaged and that leaders must be agents of change, creative, ethical, and global thinkers who can create learning organizations. The research reveals that organizations that are going to thrive in the knowledge economy are those that have marketing leaders who can build learning organizations, encourage diversity, and ensure employees are engaged in meaningful work.

The Influence Of Leader Behaviors And Individual Cultural Values On Interpersonal And Informational Justice Perceptions, David Swiderski

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Leadership and culture are two constructs often studied along with organizational justice, however; much of the past research has focused on measuring these constructs broadly. In addition, clarifying and supporting leader behaviors were also important predictors of informational justice perceptions. No significant moderating …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

A 2002 congressional mandate initiated the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Centers of Excellence programs with a requirement to conduct cross-organizational research and development. The resulting complex multiorganizational programs required more effective virtual leadership and management strategies. Fifteen years later, the presidential budget showed that 61% of the DHS budget was targeted for such research and development. The complex management strategies and virtual leadership skills required to lead the programs were lacking, as top scientific researchers are drawn upon to manage programs. The purpose of this study was to understand followers' perspectives regarding virtual leadership and collaboration within complex …
