Social Networks, Neighborhood Effects, And Credit Access: Evidence From Rural Guatemala, Bruce Wydick, Harmony Karp Hayes, Sarah Hilliker Kempf Jan 2011

Social Networks, Neighborhood Effects, And Credit Access: Evidence From Rural Guatemala, Bruce Wydick, Harmony Karp Hayes, Sarah Hilliker Kempf

Economics Faculty Publications

We measure the extent to which social networks determine sources of credit from a survey of 465 households in western Guatemala. We estimate correlated, contextual and endogenous effects of networks at the neighborhood, church, and village levels, finding that church networks display endogenous effects in credit access. We calculate an elasticity of social imitation (ESI) indicating if the percentage of people accessing microfinance in a church network doubles, the probability of an individual household accessing microfinance increases by 14.1 percent, a magnitude similar to our estimated ESIs for televisions and cell phones within church and neighbor networks.

The Impact Of Fdi On Co₂ Emissions In Latin America, Luisa Blanco, Fidel Gonzalez, Isabel Ruiz Jan 2011

The Impact Of Fdi On Co₂ Emissions In Latin America, Luisa Blanco, Fidel Gonzalez, Isabel Ruiz

School of Public Policy Working Papers

This paper uses panel Granger causality tests to study the relationship between sector specific FDI and CO2 emissions. Using a sample of 18 Latin American countries for the 1980-2007 period, we find causality running from FDI in polluting intensive industries (“the dirty sector”) to CO2 emissions per capita. This result is robust to controlling for other factors associated with CO2 emissions and using the ratio of CO2 emissions to GDP. For other sectors, we find no robust evidence that FDI causes CO2 emissions.

In The Aftermath Of The Financial Crisis Of 2008: What Have We Learned?, Luisa Blanco, Michael Crouch

School of Public Policy Working Papers

In the aftermath of the financial crisis and economic recession of 2008, it is important to reflect not only on its causes, but also on specific policies that can help countries to move towards sustained economic growth. This publication provides a compendium of lectures that intend to do this. The focus of the discussion is around the U.S. (first two chapters) and Latin America (last chapter), which enhances our understanding of the forces at play and the necessary policies that need to be implemented in different regions of the world. Dr. Lee Ohanian points to the strange differences between the …

Explaining The Rise Of The Left In Latin America, Luisa Blanco, Robin Grier Jan 2011

Explaining The Rise Of The Left In Latin America, Luisa Blanco, Robin Grier

School of Public Policy Working Papers

Latin American politics has taken a left-hand turn in the last decade, with an increasing number of chief executives hailing from left-of-center parties. We investigate the political and socio-economic factors explaining political ideology of the chief executive in a sample of 100 elections taking place between 1975 and 2007 in eighteen Latin American countries. We find that the commodity booms in agricultural, mining and oil are positively and significantly related to the probability that a country will have a chief executive from a left-of-center political party. However, for oil exports, we observe that this effect only holds for Venezuela. We …

The (Non) Effect Of Natural Resource Dependence On Capital Accumulation In Latin America, Luisa Blanco, Robin Grier Jan 2011

The (Non) Effect Of Natural Resource Dependence On Capital Accumulation In Latin America, Luisa Blanco, Robin Grier

School of Public Policy Working Papers

In a simultaneous model of human and physical capital accumulation for 17 Latin American countries from 1975 to 2004, we show that overall resource dependence is not significantly related to physical and human capital. Disaggregating the natural resource variable into subcategories, we find that petroleum export dependence is associated with higher physical capital and lower human capital, while agricultural export dependence is often associated with lower levels of physical capital. All of these effects are quantitatively small, however, casting doubt on the idea that natural resource dependence has stifled the accumulation of capital in the region.

The Impact Of Spatial Interdependence On Fdi In Latin America, Luisa Blanco Jan 2011

The Impact Of Spatial Interdependence On Fdi In Latin America, Luisa Blanco

School of Public Policy Working Papers

This analysis considers whether spatial interdependence is an important determinant of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Latin America. Two types of spatial interdependence are explored: 1) surrounding market potential and 2) spatial autocorrelation of FDI. Using a sample of 17 Latin American countries, with observations from 1986 to 2006, we find that spatial interdependence matters for world net FDI in the region. Surrounding market potential has a positive effect on FDI of significant magnitude, but there is no evidence that FDI is spatially autocorrelated. Other contributors to FDI in this analysis include governance, specifically control of corruption, and exports of …

All The News That's Fit To Print? A Comparison Of News Narratives Of The 2009 Horduran Coup, Sarah P. Iacobucci

Theses & ETDs

This thesis seeks to analyze the differences in the narratives about the coup d'etat of President Manuel Zelaya of Honduras in 2009 from three news sources: Mexico's La Jornada, TeleSUR, a transnational Latin American news network, and The New York Times. La Jornada and TeleSUR both represent outlets with left-leaning, counter-hegemonic tendencies, but whereas TeleSUR represents the vision of ALBA, an organization of countries seeking alternate paths of development for the region, La Jornada is a wholly independent news source. By comparing these two sources with The New York Times, an emblem of mainstream Western news, this thesis seeks to …

Transforming The City. An Ethnography Of Contested Public Space In Venezuela, Ana Servigna Jan 2011

Transforming The City. An Ethnography Of Contested Public Space In Venezuela, Ana Servigna

Anthropology - Dissertations

My research falls within urban anthropology, as it examines how supporters and opponents of the Venezuelan government have manipulated symbols in attempting to control certain public places in Venezuela's capital city, Caracas. My thesis is that by using public places to advance their respective agendas, President Chávez' supporters and opponents have struggled for power and have exacerbated the country's social segregation, territorial division and political intolerance. My study reveals that despite its particular topography and socioeconomic structure, Caracas has a characteristic cartography of political segregation. This cartography has been created by groups of government opponents and supporters that want to …

Latin America’S Indigenous Women, Courtney Hall Jan 2011

Latin America’S Indigenous Women, Courtney Hall

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Latin America’s indigenous women are as diverse as the land they inhabit. Their uniqueness is shaped by belonging to groups that have their own distinct history, traditions, and identity. Yet despite this diversity, indigenous women confront the same human rights challenges: racial, gender, and socio-economic discrimination. Without ignoring the diversity of indigenous women, a better understanding of their fundamental struggles can be gained by weaving these issues together in a comprehensive narrative.

Mujeres Y Bienestar: Un Estudio Comparativo De Chile Y Uruguay, Jennifer Pribble Jan 2011

Mujeres Y Bienestar: Un Estudio Comparativo De Chile Y Uruguay, Jennifer Pribble

Political Science Faculty Publications

Foreign Aid's Impact On Economic Growth: Conditional On Accountable Institutions?, Anna Monique Castrillo Jan 2011

Foreign Aid's Impact On Economic Growth: Conditional On Accountable Institutions?, Anna Monique Castrillo

LSU Master's Theses

This paper studies the impact of foreign aid on economic growth in Latin America and the Caribbean and determines whether this relationship is conditional on institutional quality, utilizing an index of accountability. I examine whether or not accountability structures rather than fiscal policies as used in Craig Burnside and David Dollar's 2000 article “Aid, Policies, and Growth” are a better determinant for overall economic growth. Using a database spanning 1996 to 2008, this paper examines the relationship between foreign aid and economic growth in 19 Latin American and Caribbean countries and seeks a clear definition of institutional quality. The findings …

Natural Resource Abundance And Fdi In Latin America. The Path Of Inequality., Luciano H. Romero Mascarell Jan 2011

Natural Resource Abundance And Fdi In Latin America. The Path Of Inequality., Luciano H. Romero Mascarell

Undergraduate Economic Review

Does natural resource abundance decrease Latin American Foreign Direct Investment? This paper studies the effects of natural resource abundance on foreign direct investment (FDI), by focusing on inequality as the channel that links these two variables. Two arguments in the literature inspire this paper: 1) scholars attribute Latin America’s high income inequality to its abundance of natural resources; and 2) some scholars argue that income inequality leads to lower investment. I argue that large shares of capital-intensive endowments (export measured as percentage share of GDP) are associated with low levels of secondary and tertiary FDI. The theory is based on …
