The Financial Arm Of The Farc: A Threat Finance Perspective, Thomas R. Cook Mar 2011

The Financial Arm Of The Farc: A Threat Finance Perspective, Thomas R. Cook

Journal of Strategic Security

The FARC (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia or Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) transformed from a traditional guerrilla group into a full-fledged insurgency because of its ability to effectively convert the proceeds derived from illegal narcotic trafficking into operational funds. Those financial capabilities allowed the FARC to challenge government authority in large swathes of the Colombian state. The FARC moved into the drug trade, initially controlling production territory and subsequently engaging in trafficking, which allowed the organization to increase its war-fighting capabilities. This paper only scratches the surface of the mechanism by which the FARC utilized its coca revenue in …

Should The Bolivian Government Have Ended Fuel Subsidies?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor Feb 2011

Should The Bolivian Government Have Ended Fuel Subsidies?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor

Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports

On Dec. 26, Bolivian President Evo Morales issued a decree canceling heavy subsidies on gasoline and diesel fuel, citing the heavy preponderance of fuel smuggling across the border, and thus triggered a rise in fuel prices by more than 70 percent. The change was met with widespread protests, riots and a national transport strike. Morales reversed his decision on Dec. 31. Should Morales have ended fuel subsidies in Bolivia? What are the political ramifications for the move and its subsequent reversal? What else can the government do about widespread fuel smuggling? Is the government likely to cut subsidies in the …

All The News That's Fit To Print? A Comparison Of News Narratives Of The 2009 Horduran Coup, Sarah P. Iacobucci Jan 2011

All The News That's Fit To Print? A Comparison Of News Narratives Of The 2009 Horduran Coup, Sarah P. Iacobucci

Theses & ETDs

This thesis seeks to analyze the differences in the narratives about the coup d'etat of President Manuel Zelaya of Honduras in 2009 from three news sources: Mexico's La Jornada, TeleSUR, a transnational Latin American news network, and The New York Times. La Jornada and TeleSUR both represent outlets with left-leaning, counter-hegemonic tendencies, but whereas TeleSUR represents the vision of ALBA, an organization of countries seeking alternate paths of development for the region, La Jornada is a wholly independent news source. By comparing these two sources with The New York Times, an emblem of mainstream Western news, this thesis seeks to …

A Perspective From Honduras' Civil Society Truth Commission, Craig Scott Jan 2011

A Perspective From Honduras' Civil Society Truth Commission, Craig Scott

All Papers

The present document formed the basis for a presentation by the author to the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development of the House of Commons of Canada during a March 9, 2011, hearing on the situation in Honduras. After referencing the June 28, 2009, coup d’ état in Honduras, the author describes how the post-coup political situation led to the creation of two commissions – a Truth and Reconciliation Commission (Comisión de la Verdad y de Reconciliación, or CVR) given its mandate to investigate the “crisis” of June 28, 2009, by the current holder of the Honduran Presidency, …

Mujeres Y Bienestar: Un Estudio Comparativo De Chile Y Uruguay, Jennifer Pribble Jan 2011

Mujeres Y Bienestar: Un Estudio Comparativo De Chile Y Uruguay, Jennifer Pribble

Political Science Faculty Publications
