Mormon Fertility In Latin America, Kiira Elizabeth Fox
Mormon Fertility In Latin America, Kiira Elizabeth Fox
Theses and Dissertations
While previous research has identified religion as an influence of fertility, how context changes the nature of that relationship remains little understood. Using census data from Brazil, Chile and Mexico, this study examines whether the high fertility pattern of one pronatalist, American-born religion (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) translates to the Latin American context. Results indicate that it does, but only inconsistently as the pronatalist pattern is masked by members' educational attainment and mixed religion marriages. When these attributes are accounted for LDS fertility is high in Latin America, especially among the more educated. This study highlights …
Hollywood's Other America: Neoliberalism, Us Hegemony, And The Construction Of An Imaginative Geography Of The Americas In Contemporary Us Film, Brent Smith
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
This thesis explores the production of Latin America as a space in Hollywood films in the context of neoliberal hegemony and the shifting power relations of late capitalist globalization. Drawing on Edward Said's notion of 'imaginative geographies' I examine the way in which Hollywood representations of Latin America have constructed a spatio-temporal imaginative geography of the Americas that structures US knowledge of Latin America, arguing that these representations form part of a neocolonial discourse that legitimates neoliberal economic expansion and direct US military or political intervention in Latin America. In contemporary US film, this geographic imaginary is produced through representations …

Are Conflicts Hampering Per's Energy And Mining Sectors?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor
Are Conflicts Hampering Per's Energy And Mining Sectors?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor
Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports
There are currently 200 conflicts over natural resources in Peru, particularly in rural areas where residents complain extractive projects are destroying their lands and that they are unlikely to see many of the economic benefits, Reuters reported May 2, citing Per's human rights office. Those conflicts threaten to derail investments totaling some $40 billion over the next decade, according to the report. Are these tensions likely to crimp Per's energy and mining sectors? Which types of projects face the most strident opposition? How should the next president handle such situations? How would Ollanta Humala and Keiko Fujimori differ in their …

The Icsid Effect? Considering Potential Variations In Arbitration Awards, Susan Franck
The Icsid Effect? Considering Potential Variations In Arbitration Awards, Susan Franck
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
The legitimacy of the World Bank's dispute resolution body - The International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) - is a matter of heated debate. Some states have alleged that ICSID is biased, withdrawn from the ICSID Convention, and advocated creating alternative arbitration systems. Using pre-2007 archival data of the population of then- known arbitration awards, this Article quantitatively assesses whether ICSID arbitration awards were substantially different from arbitration awards rendered in other forums. The Article examines variation in the amounts claimed and outcomes reached to evaluate indicators of bias. The results indicated that there was no reliable …
