An Attempt To Develop Automatic Sequential Language Skills In Kindergarten Children, Stanley Goodrich
All Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine if a group of kindergarten children, after receiving instructional activities designed to develop automatic-sequential language skills, would differ from a matched control group not receiving such instruction. The design of the study called for the administration of the three ITPA subtests, Visual-Motor Sequencing, Auditory-Vocal Sequencing, and Auditory-Vocal Automatic, to both groups prior to and following the program of instructional activities.

Conditioning Expressive Language In A Nonverbal Child, Frederick R. Moll
Conditioning Expressive Language In A Nonverbal Child, Frederick R. Moll
All Master's Theses
The problem of treating the child with delayed speech acquisition has generated a considerable amount of research and these studies have pointed out the need for further work in this area. The purpose of this study is to test the procedures of one particularly effective study, that of Dr. Burl B. Gray at the Monterey Institute for Speech and Hearing in Monterey, California. By removing it from the clinical setting of the Institute, with its unusually well-trained and highly specialized staff, and by successfully employing its procedures using comparatively untrained personnel, it was felt that this program might be applied …

Effects Of Programmed Conditioning On Language Achievement Of A Ten Year Old Non-Verbal Child, Robert J. Moore
All Master's Theses
It was hypothesized that a ten year old non-verbal boy could progress in the development of language through the use of programmed conditioning (Gray, 1968) conducted in a public school by a teacher not specifically trained in speech and language.

Readers both before and after the publication of Malcolm Lowry's Under the Volcano frequently misunderstood Lowry's Method and consequently oversimplified His Beaning, Judging the novel to be over- written and carelessly constructed, they suggested cute or revisions. close reading, however, vindicates teary, who Insisted that extreme care had gone into his multi-leveled hovel and that any substantial deletions or modifications would bare the overall plan of his work.

A Study Of The Creative Genesis Of The Twenty-Two Published Children's Novels By Howard Pease, Shirley May (Woods) Jennings
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
It was the purpose of this study to gather primary source material, and corroborate that material whenever possible, concerning the creative genesis of each of the twenty-two published trade books for children written by Howard Pease. It attempted to determine to what extent Pease's past experiences were incorporated into his novels, as well as those external forces which influenced the genesis of these trade books.

To Speak As Equals: Language Training In The Peace Corps 1961-68, Allan M. Kulakow, Peace Corps (U.S.)
Other Documents
This short publication is about how language instruction in the Peace Corps evolved from 1961 through to 1968. According to the document, "language instruction in the first few Peace Corps training programs was limited to about one hundred hours. The average achievement was low and inability to speak the host countries' languages well was a major problem.
"Volunteers today receive a minimum of three hundred hours of language training in the standard twelve-week training program. The language training component in some programs has gone as high as five hundred and fifty hours. The quality of this intensive audio-lingual language instruction …
The Theme Of Social Decay In The Last Five Novels Of James Fenimore Cooper, Cecil John Miller
The Theme Of Social Decay In The Last Five Novels Of James Fenimore Cooper, Cecil John Miller
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The following discussion is intended to deal with the theme of social decay as it comes to expression in the last five novels of James Fenimore Cooper.1 The method adopted for realizing this intention is to examine closely the characteristic features of the late novels in order, first, to ascertain the precise nature of the theme of social decay as an intellectual statement and, secondly, to appraise the artistic means chosen for embodying this theme in the individual books. Hence the primary emphasis of the investigation lies with the thematic study of the source, that is with the novels …

Charlotte Bronte's Novels: The Artistry Of Their Construction, Anne Wonders Passel
Charlotte Bronte's Novels: The Artistry Of Their Construction, Anne Wonders Passel
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Charlotte Bronte is a conscious artist, avare of the demand of the novel form. In her four novels she demonstrates her understanding of the principles of organic unity. Each novel is based on a different pattern, but each achieves unity and coherence through the author's conscious use of structure, language, and theme.
The Professor (written in 1846-1847, published posthumously in 1857), though highly structured, seems the least expertly handled of her novels. Overly romantic, it holds rigidly to a predetermined three-part division, a triple emphasis which the author carries to the extreme. Her conscious attention to structure, however, indicates that …

Troilus And Criseyde: A Study In Chaucer's Narrative Technique, Eugene Henri Soules
Troilus And Criseyde: A Study In Chaucer's Narrative Technique, Eugene Henri Soules
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Troilus and Criseyde contains surprisingly little description (only two percent of the total number of lines); nevertheless, descriptions generate numerous dramatic parallels and thematic implications. For the most part, description concentrates on cosmography and characters. Chaucer omits detailed descriptions of interior settings - they are either ignored or impressionistically suggested by mention of single items - but, rather, he dwells on generalized impressions of seasons; detailed accounts of sunrises, sunsets, and astronomical conditions; and methodically controlled pictures of the major characters. To observe the overall effect and use Chaucer makes descriptive passages - to see authorial implication in passages of …

The Subangelic Vision Of Saul Bellow: A Study Of His First Six Novels, 1944-1964, Robert Roy Dutton
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
While there is an understandable reticence on the part of critics of contemporary American literature to make definitive judgements, there does seem to be a general consensus that the novels of Saul Bellow represent the contemporary American novel at its best. Moreover, this consensus comes not only from critical journals with an exclusive and limited circulation, it also is to be seen in publications of wider appeal, the weekly news magazines and the book reviews of daily newspapers. What is even more astonishing is that the reading public seems to agree with the critics and book reviewers; at this writing, …

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Every serious student of English, no matter how many years separate him from the M.A. or Ph. D. degrees, must develop to a high degree the essential quality of independence which allows him to pursue investigation in his subject more or less on his own. He cannot continue to bother librarians for every specific source of information which he way need in pursuit of his assigned or self-imposed tasks either in class or out. He should know his way around the area of bibliography--the earlier in his academic career, the better. Surely his first ventures in this direction should not …
