Recommendations For A Preparatory English Language Program For Hearing-Impaired College Students, Marguerite Re Jan 1988

Recommendations For A Preparatory English Language Program For Hearing-Impaired College Students, Marguerite Re

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to develop recommendations for a preparatory English language program for hearing-impaired college students for Clark County Community College, Las Vegas, Nevada, and other concerned colleges that do not presently offer such a program. A questionnaire designed to elicit program information regarding the goals and objectives, instructional practices and procedures, assessment and evaluation, and major problems and solutions was developed. The questionnaire was sent to directors of current preparatory hearing-impaired English language programs in two-year, liberal arts colleges; An analysis of the data received revealed a good deal of diversity as well as considerable similarity …

Learning My Way : Papers From The National Conference On Adult Aboriginal Learning, Barbara Harvey (Ed.) Jan 1988

Learning My Way : Papers From The National Conference On Adult Aboriginal Learning, Barbara Harvey (Ed.)

Research outputs pre 2011

The National Conference 'Learning My Way' has made a significant contribution to the promotion of issues concerning Aboriginal adult learning styles. Staff at the Department of Aboriginal and lntercultural Studies at the Western Australian College of Advanced Education co-ordinated the input. They were responsible for taking ideas beyond the embryonic stage and shaping these into a conference format.

Aboriginal participation was very strong at the conference. It was gratifying to find that Aboriginal people made up seventy percent of the five hundred in attendance. Also it is important to point out, that of the eight five papers presented, seventy three …

Unravelling Murder And Mayhem: An Interdisciplinary Study Of A Wiru Divination Account, Papua New Guinea, John Michael Fullingim Dec 1987

Unravelling Murder And Mayhem: An Interdisciplinary Study Of A Wiru Divination Account, Papua New Guinea, John Michael Fullingim

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

The endeavor to understand another emic view of reality offers a conceptual challenge to any observer-analyst. This paper presents the author's reflections upon his encounter with another culture and language and his endeavor to understand the cognitive world view of the Wiru, a non-Austronesian language group in the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea. The focus of the study is upon a divination rite during which a long pole, called yomo kopini, was ritually activated and through its subsequent "motions" retraced the steps of an assailant who had raped and murdered a young girl. The transcription of an eyewitness account …

Listening Comprehension: Adult Second Language Learners, Mary Karen Williams Dec 1987

Listening Comprehension: Adult Second Language Learners, Mary Karen Williams

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

The goal of this work is to discover information that will improve the selection and design of listening comprehension materials for adult second language learners. Chapter 1 treats adult versus child language learning and first versus second language learning, finding that: (1) due to the interdependence between neurological and linguistic development, adult language learning is inherently different from a child's acquisition of his primary language, nevertheless, (2) given fundamental properties common to all language use, processing strategies should be similar for first and second languages. Chapter 2 treats listening and reading as receptive (but not passive) skills. Here it is …

An Argument For The Lukan Authorship Of Hebrews, David Lewis Allen Dec 1987

An Argument For The Lukan Authorship Of Hebrews, David Lewis Allen

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

The question of the authorship of the New Testament epistle to the Hebrews has provided scholars with fertile ground for speculation from the earliest days of Church history until the present time. The purpose of this dissertation is to propose and argue for the possibility of Luke the physician and traveling companion of the Apostle Paul as having been the independent author. After a survey of the major theories on authorship proposed from the times of the Church Fathers to the present, I briefly discuss the arguments pro and con for the possibility of the three leading candidates for authorship: …

Urban Images Of Nineteenth-Century London: The Literary Geography Of Charles Dickens, Priscilla Kaufmann Dec 1987

Urban Images Of Nineteenth-Century London: The Literary Geography Of Charles Dickens, Priscilla Kaufmann

Student Work

The hypothesis of this thesis is that literature can be a valuable source of geographic information. Literary landscapes capture both the material and perceptual images of places, and often reflect the real world upon which they are based. In addition, literary geography plays an important integrative role of binding together two separate disciplines, literature and geography, and demonstrates that knowledge about the world can be obtained from both the artistic as well as the scientific approaches. The primary strength of the use of literature for geographic research is that it captures the human experience with the landscape. The goal of this …

The State Of Legal Writing: Res Ipsa Loquitur, George D. Gopen Nov 1987

The State Of Legal Writing: Res Ipsa Loquitur, George D. Gopen

Michigan Law Review

There is a glory, it seems, in the mystery of a language that can be deciphered only by initiates of the secret society; there is a great sense of power and an even greater actuality of power in controlling a language that in turn controls the most pressing affairs of individuals and communities; and there is a monopolistic safety in being able to manipulate a language which because it was part of the creation of legal problems must be part of their solutions as well. It was true in 1921, and it is still true sixty-six years later. This essay …

An Interested Response To A "Wholly Disinterested Assessment": Lebel On Summers On Lebel On Summers On ….Er…Um…Oh, Yeah…Fuller, Paul A. Lebel

Michigan Law Review

In 1985, I published in the Michigan Law Review a review of a recent book by Professor Robert S. Summers on the legal philosophy of Lon Fuller. Professor Summers has published in the Cornell Law Review an ironically titled criticism of my review and of another review. In a number of respects, Professor Summers' Assessment has served to increase my understanding of his book, and I trust that other readers will be similarly benefited. Although Professor Summers' response to my review of his book takes issue with what I said on a number of points, I strongly suspect that few …

A Descriptive Study Of The Process Of Superordination In Community College Writers, H Eric Branscomb Jan 1987

A Descriptive Study Of The Process Of Superordination In Community College Writers, H Eric Branscomb

Doctoral Dissertations

Using analyses of speak aloud writing protocols, this study describes the cognitive processes of community college writers as they use a series of drafts to derive superordinating statements about their experiences.

During the 1985-1986 school year, ten students from Northern Essex Community College volunteered to give a protocol as they completed a writing task. Five of the writers were from a Basic Writing course, and five were from advanced writing courses. The task asked them to generate details for and then draft narratives of three related personal experiences. Then the writers combined the three narratives into one draft, which ideally …

Intellectual Integration, James Boyd White Jan 1987

Intellectual Integration, James Boyd White

Articles

In this paper, I want to talk about the activity of intellectual integration itself: about what it can mean to integrate-to put together in a complex whole-aspects of our culture, or of the world, that seem to us disparate or unconnected; and what it can mean in so doing to integrate-to bring together in interactive life-aspects of our own minds and beings that we normally separate or divide from each other: I want to think of integration, that is-and of its opposite, disintegration-as taking place on two planes of existence at once, the cultural and the individual. For what is …

Applications Of Syntax And Pragmatics To Research In Writing., Kathryn Louise Riley Jan 1987

Applications Of Syntax And Pragmatics To Research In Writing., Kathryn Louise Riley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Researchers in writing have expressed disillusionment with transformational-generative syntax over the past decade. Such disillusionment is caused partly by the different research goals and assumptions about language held by researchers in syntax and those in writing, and partly by unrealistic expectations about the pedagogical usefulness of syntactic theory. However, rather than abandoning the study of linguistics, writing specialists may benefit by reexamining the relation between their field and that of linguistics. First, researchers in writing should distinguish more clearly between applied research and pedagogy. Syntactic theory can be used to explain and analyze certain structural phenomena in student writing, even …

Multicultural Education : A Book Of Readings, Gary Partington (Ed.) Jan 1987

Multicultural Education : A Book Of Readings, Gary Partington (Ed.)

Research outputs pre 2011

The problem of obtaining texts with material relevant to the core course in Aboriginal and Multicultural Education in the W.A. College led me to suggest a book of readings selected by those teaching the course. Obviously this was a trap for the unwary, for the diversity of recommendations that I received meant that unless the book was to be of mammoth proportions, some lecturers were bound to be disappointed. This was compounded by difficulties in tracking down authors to obtain their permission in time to publish.

Even so, it is anticipated that the collection of readings finally assembled will contribute …

Thinking About Our Language, James Boyd White Jan 1987

Thinking About Our Language, James Boyd White

Articles

Except for one meeting, which I will describe below, I knew Bob Cover only through his writings. This circumstance was of course a disappointment to me, for our interests were similar, and his death now makes the loss irreparable. But perhaps this is less of a limitation than would normally be the case, for as much as anyone in the law Bob was, and is, actively present in his writing, both as a person and as a mind.-But that dichotomy of person and mind gets it wrong, for what I would like to catch is a sense of fusion or …

Economics And Law: Two Cultures In Tension, James Boyd White Jan 1987

Economics And Law: Two Cultures In Tension, James Boyd White

Articles

I want to preface my remarks by saying something about the kind of talk this is going to be. As my title says, I shall speak mainly about economics and law, which I shall examine as forms of thought and life, or what I shall call cultures. With law, about which in fact I shall speak rather briefly, I am naturally familiar by training and experience. But with economics I am familiar only as an observer as a general reader who reads the newspaper, as a lawyer who has followed a little of the law and economics literature, and as …

Some Major Aspects Of The Focus System In Isnag, Rodolfo Rosario Barlaan Aug 1986

Some Major Aspects Of The Focus System In Isnag, Rodolfo Rosario Barlaan

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

This study attempts to specify how the syntactic form signals the semantic and pragmatic aspects of the focus system in the Isnag language. It specifies the correlation between the semantics and grammar of focus by proposing a ranking of the relevant semantic/participant roles called the Preferential Selection Hierarchy. This hierarchy constrains the positions the NP's can take in the clause and the co-occurrence of the NP's (i.e., which NP's may occur together in a clause). With regard to the correlation between the pragmatics and the grammar of focus, this study discusses, (a) the COMMENT-TOPIC structure, which is the overarching force …

The Structure Of Thai Narrative Discourse, Somsonge Burusphat Aug 1986

The Structure Of Thai Narrative Discourse, Somsonge Burusphat

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

This study presents the interrelated concerns of Thai narrative discourse which include macrostructure, texture, constituent structure, and cultural information. The macrostructure is the global meaning of a discourse which is derived via the basic principles of macro-processing. A specific Thai narrative text is analyzed to illustrate how to derive a macrostructure via these principles and how the derived macrostructure can be considered to be a control on the content and balance of the story. The profile of narrative discourse is a kind of texture which is a manifestation of the macrostructure. The profile is studied in relation to plot as …

Sex-Based Differences In English Argumentative Text: A Tagmemic Sociolinguistic Perspective, Susan Lynn Peterson May 1986

Sex-Based Differences In English Argumentative Text: A Tagmemic Sociolinguistic Perspective, Susan Lynn Peterson

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

This work applies insights from sociolinguistics, text-linguistics, social psychology, women's studies, informal logic, and tagmemic theory to the task of investigating sex-based textual differences in argumentative text. More specifically, it (1) lays out a means (both theoretical and methodological) of analyzing argumentative text; (2) analyzes the differences between argumentative texts produced by university freshman women and those produced by their male counterparts; (3) compares the findings of this analysis to previous studies in sex-based differences in English; (4) presents a sketch of these texts' social production context with an emphasis on sex-based social patterns in communication style and in moral …

On The Interaction Of Linguistic Texts And Human Knowledge, Kerry Stewart Robichaux May 1986

On The Interaction Of Linguistic Texts And Human Knowledge, Kerry Stewart Robichaux

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

This study examines some aspects of the interaction of linguistic texts and human knowledge. The quest for greater context in linguistics suggests the focus of this study, viz., the effect of a text on the knowledge of its receiver. A practical problem arises in a study of this sort, however, viz., how should knowledge be represented so that the effects a text has on it can be identified and analyzed? One of the notions employed in the field of artificial intelligence, i.e., the notion of frames, is applied to the problem. In essence, then, this study shows the possible relationships …

Computer Assisted Dialect Adaptation: The Tucanoan Experiment, Robert Bruce Reed May 1986

Computer Assisted Dialect Adaptation: The Tucanoan Experiment, Robert Bruce Reed

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation provides the theoretical basis for a computer program that adapts textual material from one language of the Tucanoan family to another. Tucanoan languages are spoken by small groups living in southeastern Colombia, northwestern Brazil, northern Peru, and northern Ecuador. This work represents the first attempt to apply principles of machine translation and computational linguistics to indigenous languages of Colombia. It discusses aspects of translation theory relevant to machine translation. Some features of the Tucanoan languages relevant to the adaptation process are discussed in depth, including differences in suffix systems marking case, noun classifiers, and the evidential systems of …

Publications

In recent years, a number of useful speech- and language-related research tools have been under development at MIT. These tools are aids for efficiently analyzing the acoustic characteristics of speech and the phonological properties of a language. They are playing a valuable role in our own research, as well as in research conducted elsewhere. This paper describes several of the systems being developed for use on our Lisp Machine workstations.

Comparative Learning Effectiveness In Reading And Language Skills As Taught By Success In Reading And Writing Vs,, Jean M. Becker

Theses

The project presented herein was designed to measure in a quantitative way the comparative effectiveness of teaching and learning reading and Language skills in groups taught by the basal reading series and by the Success in Reading and Writing.

A discussion of the rather substantially different approaches in these two teaching methods is presented. The basal reading series is a highly structured, specifically ordered teaching system involving detailed material in the teacher's manual, student readers and workbooks at each level of instruction, Grades K- 6.

The Success in Reading and Writing program, on the other hand , while quite structured …

Language, Communication, Computers And The Law, R. A. Samek Jun 1985

Language, Communication, Computers And The Law, R. A. Samek

Dalhousie Law Journal

There is an old story about a drunken man who is looking for an object under a street light. A policeman asks him what he is looking for. "It is my keys", he says. "Did you lose them here?" "No, over there.'" "Why then are you looking for them over here?" "Because I can see here", is the man's reply. The real significance of this story is very different from what it appears. It is not the man who is foolish but the policeman. We can only look for something from where we can see it. The alternative is to …

Privacy In Confucian And Taoist Thought, Christina B. Whitman Jan 1985

Privacy In Confucian And Taoist Thought, Christina B. Whitman

Book Chapters

Only three aspects of the broad concept "privacy" will be explored in this essay: privacy as providing a sphere for intimate personal relationships with family and friends, privacy as freedom from surveillance for purposes of gathering personal information, and privacy as freedom from interference by government or social controls. These concepts describe quite different concerns. They are often grouped together under the single term "privacy," but not without some strain... A comparison between a modern Western value and its counterpart, if any, in very early Confucian and Taoist belief is inevitably somewhat strained. But it serves a purpose. If nothing …
