Blind Philhellenes Vs. Selective Consumers Of Foreign Cultures: A Reassessment Of The Ancient Greco-Roman Literary Record’S Portrayal Of The Gauls In Light Of New Archaeological Evidence, Kevin P. Sweeney
Constructing the Past
The issue of perspective is intrinsic to historiography. This is evident in the ancient Greco-Roman literary record, specifically the limits placed on its value to modern academics by the ethnographic biases of its authors. However, with the rise of the post-processual approach to archaeology over the past thirty years, modern historians have begun to address this issue. By utilizing the impartial records offered by excavation, these scholars have increasingly managed to circumvent ancient authorial subjectivity and reevaluate the modern preconceptions it created of the world of antiquity. An example of the archaeological record's value in reassessing the inherent prejudices of …

We Will Never Speak Of It: Evidence Of Hitler's Direct Responsibility For The Premeditation And Implementation Of The Nazi Final Solution, Kevin P. Sweeney
Constructing the Past
The “Intentionalist vs. Functionalist” debate has raged amongst academic historians for decades, centered on the question of whether Adolf Hitler personally premeditated and instigated the Final Solution, or whether the idea and its implementation developed more gradually out of a collaborative effort within the ranks of the Nazi bureaucracy. This paper seeks, through careful analysis of Nazi primary source materials, to establish an “Intentionalist” argument in favor of Hitler being directly responsible for the premeditation and implementation of the infamous Nazi attempt to systematically annihilate the entirety of Europe’s Jewish population.

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
The National Wildlife Research Center (NWRC) and its predecessor laboratories have a long history of developing materials and methods for managing rodents and the damage they cause. The NWRC has been influential in exploring, developing, and maintaining legal uses of many traditional field rodenticides such as strychnine and zinc phosphide. Products have been developed for managing rodents in a variety of locales, and for managing a variety of species, from commensal rodents in urban areas, to pocket gophers and mountain beaver in forests, prairie dogs and ground squirrels on rangelands, and nutria and beaver in wetlands. Considerable research has also …

The Nature And Extent Of The French Resistance Against Nazi Occupation During World War Ii, Jeffrey Folker
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
Comprehensively covers a very misunderstood and myth-laden part of the history of WWII. Folker makes it clear, from a comprehensive review of primary and secondary literature, that the resistance offered by the French to Nazi Occupation was largely insignificant and its effectiveness overblown during and after the war.

Is Islam The Solution?: The Muslim Brotherhood And The Search For An Islamic Democracy In Egypt, Erica Devine
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
Since the removal of President Mubarak in 2011, the role of the Muslim Brotherhood as a political force within Egypt has grown exponentially. These events have called into question the role the Muslim Brotherhood will play in the creation of a new government in Egypt. During the 1970s and 1980s, the Brotherhood underwent a gradual transformation of its ideology in the direction of democracy and political participation. The influence of such ideologues as Hasan al-Banna, Hasan Isma‘il al-Hudaybi, Umar al-Tilmisani, and Yusef al-Qaradawi provided the foundation for this transition and spurred the movement towards the blending of civil and religious agendas. …

New World Rivals: The Role Of The Narragansetts In The Breakdown Of Anglo-Native Relations During King Philip’S War, Lauren Sagar
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
On June 28, 1675, King Philip’s War officially broke out between the Native Americans and English colonists of southern New England. The English immediately sought an alliance with the Narragansett tribe of Rhode Island due to their vast power in the area. However, English actions during this quest for alliance would ultimately turn the Narragansetts into enemies. The diplomatic and military encounters between the Narragansetts and English serve as a lens to understand dispossession, intercultural conflict, and colonialism during this period.

A Union Of Negatives: Ayatollah Khomeini And The Mobilization Of Dissent In The Iranian Revolution Of 1979, Nicholas G. Sumski
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
The Islamic Revolution of 1979 eradicated half a century of Westernization in Iran and installed Ayatollah Khomeini as the leader of Iran’s new Islamic Republic. However, the revolutionary forces were not strongly unified under Khomeini’s radical Islamic vision. Indeed, many facets of the opposition simply desired moderate political reforms to increase democratic participation in the government and opposed the imposition of a government directed under the auspices of Islam. By the late 1970s, though, these various moderate revolutionaries realized that the only legitimate means to overthrow the reign of the American-supported Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, would be to join the …

Videotaping Oral Histories: Representing Individuals And Institutions, Tim Bland Muren
Videotaping Oral Histories: Representing Individuals And Institutions, Tim Bland Muren
Theses and Dissertations
Oral history interviews have traditionally been captured on audio-tape, but with emerging technologies, some oral historians are using videotape to capture interviews. Since the beginnings of oral history as an academic tool, oral historians have successfully argued the merits of oral history as a viable academic source for researchers. Some academic historians are now arguing for the use of video as a tool for oral history interviews, though the video medium has both positive and negative attributes. Capturing oral history video requires guidelines such as keeping the camera steady and a very minimal amount of editing. Editing can be used …
