Economic Powers That Be: U.S.-Russo Political Actions And Their Affect On The Russian Economy, Sharon R. Holland
Economic Powers That Be: U.S.-Russo Political Actions And Their Affect On The Russian Economy, Sharon R. Holland
Senior Honors Theses
The United States and Russia currently face political problems that undermine areas of trade and economics of both respective countries despite market forces. This analysis first gives an overview of key events in history to establish a basis of understanding of the foundation of U.S.-Russo political and economic relations. Secondly, an evaluation of the current issues that have pitted Russia and America against one another will shed light on the barriers of further development. Finally, utilizing both the past and present economic impacts forecasts three possible outcomes for U.S.-Russo political relations and the economic impacts that follow as a result.
Understanding Phylogenies: Constructing And Interpreting Phylogenetic Trees, Joseph L. Staton
Understanding Phylogenies: Constructing And Interpreting Phylogenetic Trees, Joseph L. Staton
Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science
Interpretation of phylogenetic trees is fundamental in understanding the relationships between organisms, their traits or characteristics, their ecology and even their genomic and developmental biology. As trees appear more often in basic texts, many students, and even their teachers, clearly understand little of how they are constructed and even less about what can be inferred from them about the history of the representatives analyzed. Not only are these trees a source of confusion on what they do tell us, often non-specialists infer things wrongly or, worse, others misuse them in an attempt to negate the validity of evolutionary theory. In …

The Heritage Of The Mississippi County Nurse-Midwife Service, Charles Zenon Baclawski
The Heritage Of The Mississippi County Nurse-Midwife Service, Charles Zenon Baclawski
Student Theses and Dissertations
The Mississippi County Nurse Midwife Program began during a conversation between two people in 1974. The agency was originally organized to improve access to medical care for women in Blytheville, Arkansas. However, it quickly evolved into a tool of changing deep seated attitudes of mistrust of male dominated orthodox medicine among poor and minority women. The effectiveness of the agency is founded in the acceptance of nurse-midwifery into the family of orthodox medical practice. This was a significant change from the decades-long narrative developed by orthodox medicine in Arkansas. The contributions of the nurse-midwife service are also found in the …
Beyond Pow! Wam! Stan Lee's Hand In Revolutionizing Comic Books, Kathrine Kuhlmann
Beyond Pow! Wam! Stan Lee's Hand In Revolutionizing Comic Books, Kathrine Kuhlmann
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
After World War II, comic books spiraled downward in need of a true hero. Their low literary value left them with a very limited audience because adults found them too simplistic. The hero that finally brought comics out of their slump was seventeen-year-old Stanley Martin Lieber, president of Marvel and creator of famous Marvel characters. Lee, inspired in part by his wife and his desire to be a novelist, created a new form of influential literature that dared to branch out from the elementary writing that was previously used for comics, bringing comics back into a positive light. In this …

Civil And Common Law: A Historical Analysis Of Colonial And Postcolonial Canada, Patrick S. Stroud
Civil And Common Law: A Historical Analysis Of Colonial And Postcolonial Canada, Patrick S. Stroud
Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research
Legal historians divide European law into two principal families: common law (British law) and civil law (continental European law). Common law judges favor cases; courts “discover” law on a case-by-case basis and those cases make precedents for future ruling. Civil law courts favor codes; courts compare cases to existing laws and those laws control judges’ rulings. The two rarely interact, save one prominent example: Canada. British common law supposedly superseded French legal traditions in colonial Canada. But is history so binary? Did British common law truly “conquer” French civil law? Through analysis of Canadian legal history, this article demonstrates how …
The Late Works Of Dame Ethel Smyth: A Musical Microcosm Of Interwar British Culture, Emily Morin
The Late Works Of Dame Ethel Smyth: A Musical Microcosm Of Interwar British Culture, Emily Morin
Spring 2015, British Society and Culture
This paper examines the late musical compositions of Dame Ethel Smyth in the context of British society and culture between the two World Wars. It focuses on Smyth's large-scale works, especially her operas The Boatswain's Mate (1914) and Entente Cordiale (1923-1924) and her oratorio The Prison (1930). Using these works as examples of the composer's mature style, I draw attention to a number of Smyth's original artistic choices as well as her sophisticated use of social commentary. Also considered in this research are certain anticipated roles for women as composers at the time, Smyth's other passions and pursuits, and her …
Who Was Watching Whom? A Reassessment Of The Conflict Between Germanicus And Piso, Fred K. Drogula
Who Was Watching Whom? A Reassessment Of The Conflict Between Germanicus And Piso, Fred K. Drogula
History & Classics Faculty Publications
Despite Tacitus’ insinuations to the contrary, Cn. Calpurnius Piso (cos. 7 b.c.e.) was no friend and loyal supporter of Emperor Tiberius. The emperor offered Piso the command of Syria in an effort to win over the political support of this prestigious-but-recalcitrant senator. As a safeguard should Piso attempt something treacherous in this powerful command, Tiberius gave Piso the province at a time when Germanicus Caesar—the emperor’s loyal adopted son and heir—would be in the East resolving a number of economic problems in the eastern provinces. Thus Piso was not sent to watch the prince, but to be watched by him.
