Rock Outcropping, Kaliakra Peninsula, Black Sea, Bulgaria, Barbara L. Gracious
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
This photo, taken in June 2024 at the Northern Bulgarian Black Sea Coast, captures our fleeting time against that of ocean and rocks.
Cape Kaliakra (“Beautiful Headland”) has been fought over by various tribes and groups across centuries. Succession included the Dacians, Greeks, Ottoman Turks, the Russian Navy, and in the last century, the communist government of Bulgaria. Now a nature reserve, dolphins play off the coast and cormorants seek its updrafts.
Cape Kaliakra sits on the Via Pontica, an ancient Greek road and major bird migration route from Africa into Eastern and Northern Europe.
Its beauty and its importance …

Paul De Man's Criticism Of Lyric From The Perspective Of Modernity, Jinhong Zhang, Yuetong Wang
Paul De Man's Criticism Of Lyric From The Perspective Of Modernity, Jinhong Zhang, Yuetong Wang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Since the twentieth century, lyric theory has undergone a resurgence in modern Western criticism. Viewing lyric through the lens of modernity, Paul de Man redefines its characteristics by navigating the paradox between historical and modern elements, and the dialectic between grammar and rhetoric. By deconstructing traditional academic perceptions of lyric in terms of the lyric subject, genres, and rhetorics, de Man presents lyric as an allegorical form of rhetoric that rejects a purely empirical subject, transcends temporal constraints, and eludes historical specificity. Although de Man's critical perspective has drawn skepticism, particularly concerning its apparent evasion of history, it nonetheless offers …

Journal of Arabic Sciences and Humanities
This research discusses zakat, the first and most important source of revenue during the reign of King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud, the founder of the Third Saudi State. It explores the regulations and mechanisms established by King Abdulaziz for the collection of zakat at the beginning of his efforts to unify the country, prior to the establishment of formal financial institutions. The study also examines his selection of governors (zakat emirs), the formation of teams tasked with collecting zakat from various towns and regions, the most trusted individuals assigned to this mission, and the challenges they faced in carrying …

Tangible And Design Assistance In Historic Preservation Courses To Assist Communities In The Recuperation Of Their Existing Built Cultural Resources In New Mexico, Francisco Uviña-Contreras
Faculty Publications
The presentation proposed for the NCBDS 41 Conference to be hosted at the School of Architecture and Planning (SA+P) Department at the University of New Mexico (UNM) concerns the arduous work in the Historic Preservation and Regionalism (HP+R) Program in this institution. This significant opportunity to present courses in the HP+R Program aims to "exchange and disseminate information and ideas concerning preservation education and its relationship to community engagement and its connections to its historical past." This issue is particularly relevant in the context of the NCBDS 41 Conference, which touches on aspects of the "Pedagogy in Cultural Heritage through …

"Concealed Sorrow": Unveiling The Implications Of Miscarriages On Women In England 1500-1600s, Krista Ann Everson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study examines the societal, religious, and political implications of miscarriage in Tudor England, with a particular focus on the experiences of Anne Boleyn. Miscarriage, a profoundly personal yet historically stigmatized event, intersects with broader cultural, theological, and economic forces that shape public and private responses to it. By exploring Anne Boleyn’s miscarriages within the context of Tudor society, this research sheds light on how historical understandings of pregnancy loss have influenced cultural attitudes and policies, offering insights into the lived realities of women in the early modern period.

On 27 February 1962, Surgeon General Luther Terry announced a new vaccine development program within the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). Initially, the plan had three components: (1) special laboratories and facilities for development of prototype vaccines; (2) pilot lot production facilities and preliminary vaccine trial sites; and (3) larger lot production capacity and expanded human testing. Respiratory viruses were targeted as the top priority for vaccine development. Over 5 decades, this program has evolved and expanded to include multiple academic vaccine evaluation sites within the network, now labeled as the Vaccine and Treatment Evaluation Units (VTEUs). …

Trickle-Down Coordination: The National Security Advisor’S Role As The Strategic And Operational Planner Of The Dod-Dos Interagency Relationship, Fabio S. Van Loon
Journal of Strategic Security
Forging a coherent U.S. foreign policy requires the competent management of the inter-agency framework. Defining strategy at the cabinet level and ensuring its implementation at the operational level, the National Security Advisor must act as an honest broker of the inter-agency process. This article will examine the role of three National Security Advisors from the Nixon, Carter and George W. Bush administrations, and study two examples of operational success and failure, highlighting the importance of the strategic-operational link. The author concludes by recommending a National Security Council (NSC)-led inter-agency framework that drives consensus-based strategic planning and mandates operational coordination through …

It Just Means More: The Cultural Bond Between The South And Sec Football, Ryan Stinson
Senior Theses
With the success of programs like Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech in the early 1900s, college football quickly became means of establishing Southern superiority over the northern U.S. Their success continued into the 20th and 21st centuries with the creation and rise of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). During and prior to the existence of the SEC, rivalries, traditions, and pageantry developed and thrived in communities across the southeast. These aspects created a unique environment that drew in fans of college football across the region. This resulted in a unique bond between fan, university, team, and community that has thrived within all …

This article examines the abolitionist movement in Livingston County, New York, through the records of the Livingston County Anti-Slavery Society. It shows how this region in Western New York transformed from one where slavery was tolerated to one where people fought against slavery during the Civil War. Activists between 1837 and 1839 organized meetings to spread abolitionism and to push the United States to abolish slavery.

Impact Of Covid-19 On Selected Nurse And Patient Outcomes In Emergency Units Across South Africa, Annette Lucia Pienaar, Siedine Knobloch Coetzee, Alwiena Johanna Blignaut, Marcel Fladimar Mather, Erika Fourie
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
There is extensive research on nurse outcomes1-6 and nurse-reported patient outcomes7-11 before, during, and after the COVID-19 outbreak . However, there is a notable absence of studies that examine such outcomes in emergency units across South Africa. It is evident that emergency nurses often experience the most adverse nurse outcomes, and the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated these negative impacts on emergency nurse outcomes12-15. Not only is there a scarcity of studies examining the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on nurse outcomes and nurse-reported patient outcomes in general in South Africa, but minimal research has been conducted …

Legends, Lies, & Rewritten Lives: After The Little Bighorn: Forgotten Struggles Of Those Who Walked Away, Thomas B. Davidson
DU Textbooks
This Narrative is about an event that occurred on June 25, 1876, on the banks of the Little Bighorn River in what is now the state of Montana. Seen from a 21st century perch, it tells a story of a contest between the armed representatives of two different civilizations, each of which fought in the manner of its society. The narrative will attempt to balance the truth of what happened while also relating an engaging story, but without drifting into sensationalism. The narrative will go beyond a focus on the meeting of the soldiers from either group to explore the …

Still With Us: Formative Imperatives In The History Of Material Irish Whiskey, C. 1324-1980, Fionnán O'Connor
Theses, Doctoral
Whiskey is regularly discussed as a drink entwined with Irish history and society. That history, however, has usually been read as the immaterial social history of a single material commodity. It does not consider the varied, often dissimilar beverages that have been consumed as ‘whiskey’ or as ‘uisce beatha’. Even within the more recent history of the Irish whiskey industry, most of the grain recipes of Ireland’s closed distilleries have largely passed out of trade memory. This thesis examines the evolution from c.1324 to 1980 of amorphous whiskeys, indebted to their historical moments and materially responsive to their agricultural, …

Sermons And/In/As Literature, Robert Ellison
English Faculty Research
Five of the nineteen contributors to Preaching and the Sermon in the Twentieth Century are members of English departments, so it is somewhat ironic that none of their chapters could be categorized as “literary studies” (they are instead in the sections for history, book history, media studies, and digital humanities). This presentation is intended to offer a perspective that is not represented in that collection.
In about five minutes each, I will survey the three elements mentioned in my title:
1. Sermons and literature. This section will address how sermons can be influenced by other forms of literature, and influence …
