Coming To The American Vincentian Mission In 1818: The Second Journey, John E. Rybolt C.M. Dec 2025

Coming To The American Vincentian Mission In 1818: The Second Journey, John E. Rybolt C.M.

Vincentian Studies

Three letters from Francesco Cellini, a Vincentian novice, and his confrere, Filippo Borgna, a Vincentian student with vows, are given or summarized here. In 1818, Cellini and Borgna made an eighty-eight-day voyage from Livorno, Italy, to the United States. Cellini wrote an account to a friend in Rome, and Borgna largely copied this in his letter, perhaps to ensure that one of their texts would survive the trip back to Italy. These are the only known detailed records of the Vincentians’ second journey to the US and reinforce records kept by Felix De Andreis and Joseph Rosati, who came two …

Mississippi Dugout Canoes: An Ethnohistorical And Archaeological Analysis From 1538-1900s, Sean N. Mccraw Dec 2025

Mississippi Dugout Canoes: An Ethnohistorical And Archaeological Analysis From 1538-1900s, Sean N. Mccraw

Master's Theses

Watercraft remains an overlooked aspect of Southeastern historical and archaeological scholarship. A more complete understanding has the potential to illuminate aspects of the human social process in anthropology and a more accurate construction of historical events. Recent Developments in Southeastern Archaeology, published in 2012, mentions the importance of the connections that water travel facilitated, but the work does not mention any serious investigation. While history has investigated the role native trails played in the development of the region, and while Andrew Lippmann has illustrated the agency that boat skills and watercraft gave Natives in the coastal North American region during …

Topic Modeling And Culturomic Analysis Of 30,000 Books Over 100 Years Using Gensim, Michael A. Freeman Dec 2025

Topic Modeling And Culturomic Analysis Of 30,000 Books Over 100 Years Using Gensim, Michael A. Freeman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the cultural influence of historical events on English-language fiction published between 1820 and 1929. Using a corpus of 30,256 digitized books from Project Gutenberg, Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling was applied to identify recurring themes across eleven decades. The study sought to determine whether historically significant events could be detected within fictional narratives. One clear instance emerged: Napoleon Bonaparte and the Napoleonic Wars appeared explicitly in the 1820s corpus. Beyond this, several thematic patterns were observed—such as maritime language in the 1840s, national identity in the 1880s, and youth-oriented dialogue in the early 20th century—that plausibly …

Local Problems, Global Solutions? Making It Rain In Hong Kong C. 1890-1930, Fiona Williamson Dec 2025

Local Problems, Global Solutions? Making It Rain In Hong Kong C. 1890-1930, Fiona Williamson

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

The late nineteenth to early twentieth century saw a small but dedicated rise in experimental rainmaking. The possibility that humanity might one day be able to control the weather – especially to alleviate drought – was very attractive to governments and private investors. The late nineteenth century was an era of scientific optimism and a number of rainmaking experiments across the world had brought the potential for weather control out of the realms of discourse and literature and further into tangible near-future science. There has been a small but thorough historiographical literature on this subject, focusing largely on American, British, …

Place, History, And Memory: New York City’S World’S Fairs In Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, Peter Conolly-Smith

Open Educational Resources

This proposal for an intermediate-level History seminar taps into students’ memory, sense of place, and history skills by focusing on a space many of them already know: Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. From its origins as wetlands converted in the early twentieth century to a dumping ground for ashes memorialized in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and on to its later incarnation as the site of the 1939 and 1964 World’s Fairs, the park’s history and those of the two fairs—richly documented, all—provide ample material for a place-based seminar that utilizes multiple aspects of experiential learning.

While all the reading and …

With Love From The Front: Exploring Authenticity In Historical Fiction, Sarah E. Ray Nov 2025

With Love From The Front: Exploring Authenticity In Historical Fiction, Sarah E. Ray

Masters Theses

This MFA thesis is comprised of an artist statement, a scholarly essay on authenticity in WWII historical fiction, and a novel set during World War II. The artist statement outlines personal experiences, faith perspective, and writing aesthetics that shape the approach to historical storytelling, examining how a history-oriented upbringing and Christ-centered worldview inform a writing philosophy centered on crafting emotion through authentic character development and vivid sensory details. The scholarly component argues that authentic WWII fiction requires both meticulous historical accuracy and genuine emotional truth. Drawing on primary sources including interviews with former WWII Army members, wartime diaries, and period …

The Mythology Of Polymyositis, Suur Biliciler, Tahseen Mozaffar Nov 2025

The Mythology Of Polymyositis, Suur Biliciler, Tahseen Mozaffar

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Polymyositis (PM) has been in the diagnostic armamentarium in medicine since the mid-nineteenth century. Medicine training puts a heavy emphasis on this diagnosis, and anyone with proximal muscle weakness with elevated serum creatinine kinase is assumed to be PM and a number of patients were rendered this diagnosis without additional testing. This article addresses the historical aspects of the diagnosis of PM and its evolution. We review this literature that addresses the rarity of this diagnosis and rightly puts in perspective in terms of its occurrence in relation to other inflammatory myositides.

From Pachymeningitis Hemorrhagica To Abusive Head Trauma: A Journey Through The Centuries, Oliver Berthold, Flora Blangis, Christopher Spencer Greeley

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

The development of medical knowledge follows specific principles. These also apply to abusive head trauma. The seminal literature from the early 20th century is based on earlier research from Europe, which is fundamental to understand the evolution of understanding and nomenclature of abusive head trauma. A review of original medical literature on intracranial injuries in children, published in German, English, and French, was conducted using PubMed and Google Scholar for articles before 1950. The primary search focused on subdural hemorrhages and pachymeningitis in children, followed by a snowball search of references. Full texts of available manuscripts were reviewed. Primary literature …
