Novel Commonplaces: Quotation, Epigraphs, And Literary Authority, Claudia Stokes
Novel Commonplaces: Quotation, Epigraphs, And Literary Authority, Claudia Stokes
English Faculty Research
Until the middle of the nineteenth century, commonplacing was a habitual practice of middle-class US households, undertaken by children and adults alike to record notable quotations and to cultivate their literary taste. Though it declined in popularity with the rise of the scrapbook in the midcentury, commonplacing was for centuries a standard feature of both educational curricula and domestic literacy, with generations of students instructed in the intellectual and moral benefits of selecting and copying passages culled from reading. Commonplace books offer a wealth of vital information about US literary culture, for they not only illuminate eighteenth- and nineteenth-century reading …

Getting To Know Saints: The Story Of The Church Of Jesus Christ In The Latter Days, Steven C. Harper, Scott Hales, Casey Paul Griffiths
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
Griffiths: The purpose of this meeting is to explain a little bit about what Saints is and how teachers can use it. Scott, can I start with you? Can you tell us a little bit about Saints and what it is intended to do?
Hales: Saints is a new four-volume narrative history of the Church. It covers Church history from 1815 to the present. Each volume culminates in the completion of a temple and shows Latter-day Saints making and keeping sacred covenants. The first volume covers the organization of the Church and the early years of the Restoration. It begins …

Reflections On The Future Of Global Legal Studies, Mark Fathi Massoud
Reflections On The Future Of Global Legal Studies, Mark Fathi Massoud
Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies
This Article proposes a set of theoretical ideas and practical innovations for the future of global legal studies in the three areas that make up the academic profession: research, teaching, and service. The future directions of global legal studies will involve building intellectual bridges that connect law with global politics, society, history, religion, and human behavior. Constructing these bridges preserves global legal studies as both an interdisciplinary enterprise and a movement for justice. This twin commitment to rigorous inquiry and social justice involves sustaining a welcoming community for graduate students and early career scholars, and prioritizing the experiences of those …

The Third World Women’S Alliance: History, Geopolitics, And Form, Ariane Vani Kannan
The Third World Women’S Alliance: History, Geopolitics, And Form, Ariane Vani Kannan
Dissertations - ALL
This dissertation focuses on the work of the Third World Women’s Alliance (TWWA), a women-of-color-led activist organization that maintained active chapters in New York City and the Bay Area between 1971-80. Drawing on archival research and qualitative interviews, I reconstruct how the group invoked, constructed, and circulated intersecting Third World histories and geopolitical analyses through political education, publications, and cultural events. In addition to this historical study, I seek to understand the ongoing presence of the TWWA in educational spaces through interviews with archivists and professors across disciplines. This project makes three contributions to the field of Rhetoric and Composition: …

The Influence Of History Upon Seapower, Gene Wolfe
The Influence Of History Upon Seapower, Gene Wolfe
Naval War College Review
Just as seapower has influenced history by its military and economic effects upon nation-states, so has history influenced the development of seapower by its psychological impact upon national leaders.
Producing The Past: Contested Heritage And Tourism In Glastonbury And Tintagel, Vivian Beatrice Gornik
Producing The Past: Contested Heritage And Tourism In Glastonbury And Tintagel, Vivian Beatrice Gornik
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Heritage, the “present-centered” use of the past (Ashworth 2007) influences the identities of contemporary citizens (Palmer 2005, Sommer 2009). Grasping the ways in which the production and consumption of heritage takes place is becoming increasingly relevant in a post-Brexit Britain, where the national identity is constantly up for debate. This research asks: what role does heritage tourism play in (re)producing hegemonic national narratives in Glastonbury and Tintagel? And subsequently, what do these narratives say about broader conceptualizations of English identity?
Arthurian legend permeates the historical narrative in both locations. According to the legend, King Arthur was conceived and born in …

How Will History Judge Us? The Admiral Raymond A. Spruance Lecture Given At The Naval War College, Barbara W. Tuchman
Naval War College Review
This year Mrs. Tuchman turned to the 14th century in order to gain perspective on contemporary problems and conditions. In so doing, she raised several difficult and pointed questions about the maintenance of military forces in particular and the social malaise of both centuries.

The Origins And Role Of German Naval History In The Inter-War Period 1918-1939, Kieth W. Bird
The Origins And Role Of German Naval History In The Inter-War Period 1918-1939, Kieth W. Bird
Naval War College Review
In 1919, Grossadmiral von Tirpitz lamented the "tragic fate" of Germany's attempt to become a seapower with the words: the German people do not understand the sea. "1 Tirpitz, however, remained confident that a "thorough and fair history" would vindicate the creation of the Imperial Navy's High Seas Fleet. 2 In the years that followed, the policies of Tirpitz and the Imperial Navy's role in World War I were vigorously defended by a coalition of retired and active naval officers, historians and civilian supporters.
