Creating Herstory: Female Rebellion In Arundhati Roy’S "The God Of Small Things" And "The Ministry Of Utmost Happiness", Priyanka Tewari

Theses and Dissertations

In The God of Small Things and The Ministry of Utmost Happiness novels, the author Arundhati Roy is not only attempting to give feminist weight to the multiplicity of locations in which gender is articulated by recasting her female characters in their quest for selfhood, she is also focusing on women and women-identified characters as agents of history, thereby contributing to an ongoing project of feminist historiography.

Lost & Found is a strategy card-to-mobile game series that teaches medieval religious legal systems with attention to period accuracy and cultural and historical context. The Republic In Long-Term Perspective, Richard Primus Aug 2018

The Republic In Long-Term Perspective, Richard Primus

Michigan Law Review Online

Every system of government eventually passes away. That's a feature of the human condition. The United States has been an unusually stable polity by the standards of world civilizations, and for that stability Americans should be deeply grateful. But no nation is exempt from the basic forces of history. It is not reasonable to think that the constitutional republic we know will last forever. The question is when it will meet its end-in our lifetimes, or in our grandchildren's, or centuries later. Given the stable conditions that living Americans were socialized to expect, the dominant intuition is probably something like …

Design Guidelines: A Practical Guide To Preserving The Historic, Cultural, And Architectural Heritage Of Gladewater, Texas, Conor Herterich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In October of 1930, Columbus Marion Joiner’s oil rig, “Daisy Bradford No. 3,” blew a gusher of oil high into the East Texas sky. The subsequent storm of economic activity that resulted from the discovery of the East Texas oilfield irrevocably changed the built environment of many small towns in the region, including Gladewater, Texas. Oil money that flowed into the city funded a flurry of building projects in the 1930s and 1940s that left an indelible mark on the landscape of Gladewater’s downtown area. Unfortunately, a lack of oversight, planning, and guidance has since led to the deterioration of …

The History, Meaning, And Use Of The Words Justice And Judge, Jason Boatright Aug 2018

The History, Meaning, And Use Of The Words Justice And Judge, Jason Boatright

St. Mary's Law Journal

The words justice and judge have similar meanings because they have a common ancestry. They are derived from the same Latin term, jus, which is defined in dictionaries as “right” and “law.” However, those definitions of jus are so broad that they obscure the details of what the term meant when it formed the words that eventually became justice and judge. The etymology of jus reveals the kind of right and law it signified was related to the concepts of restriction and obligation. Vestiges of this sense of jus survived in the meaning of justice and judge. …

Mortar Board: A Century Of Scholars, Chosen For Leadership, United To Serve, Susan R. Komives, Virginia N. Gordon, Jane A. Hamblin

Purdue University Press Book Previews

Mortar Board National College Senior Honor Society has a unique place in the history of higher education and indeed in the history of the United States. Founded in 1918, with inaugural chapters at Cornell University, University of Michigan, The Ohio State University, and Swarthmore College, Mortar Board was the first national organization to honor senior college women. Before women had the right to vote in the United States, Mortar Board members were leading their society to prominence across the country. In a real sense, Mortar Board grew up with the US higher education system and grew in step with women’s …

Its previous location on Armory Place was the first obtained for the school’s solitary use, but the decades-old former hotel had a host of issues and quickly became a hindrance to the growing program. This article is an account of the hard work, misfortunes, technicalities, and at last the fulfillment of the funding and construction of the original 1939 School of Law Building.

Critique And Neoliberalism In Michel Foucault, Neal Miller Aug 2018

Critique And Neoliberalism In Michel Foucault, Neal Miller

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation argues that Foucault's concept of critique is a practice that principally consists of "desubjection" and the history of the present. Critique thinks the identity of its historical present on the basis of what escapes this identity. It participates in these escapes by exploring how they challenge the concepts of extant critical discourse and illuminate the existing order of things in their contingent historicality. As the limits of a historical present involve the rules of discourse, the forms of power relations, and the production of subjectivities, critical thought must ally itself with that which undoes existing subjectivities by struggling …

Reconfiguring Architectural Agency, Peter Olshavsky Jul 2018

Reconfiguring Architectural Agency, Peter Olshavsky

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

This essay, for the exhibition "Steven Holl: Making Architecture,” argues that matter, things, and technologies are increasingly seen as co-constitutive of human agency. Studying this expanded conception of agency in the architecture of Holl reveals three opportunities. It enables us to re-describe the architect’s relation to architectural phenomenology beyond materiality. It reveals architecture’s active comportment in socially embedded settings, and it advances the idea that architecture makes us what we are.

The War To End All Wars On Ideal Female Figures: An Analysis Of Wwi And Its Effects On U.S. Women's Fashion From 1917-1927, Ayrika Johnson

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

This paper looks at fashion in America prior to, during, and after WWI to give a more holistic understanding of how war affected women's fashion. It will argue the trend towards the Flapper and "New Woman" movement were directly connected to war and how it affected women in the early 1900s. The paper will look specifically at propaganda posters and magazine ads from the time period to argue the correlation, as well as utilize supplemental material from U.S. and fashion historians.

Fashion Under The Swastika: An Analysis Of Women's Fashion During The Third Reich, Ayrika Johnson Jul 2018

Fashion Under The Swastika: An Analysis Of Women's Fashion During The Third Reich, Ayrika Johnson

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

This paper works to demonstrate women's fashion in Germany during WWII and how it was impacted by Nazi culture. Within Hitler's Germany, there was a desire to create a uniform community separate from the rest of the world, and greater than all others. Fashion is one way to analyze how the Nazis tried to accomplish this goal. The paper relies on speeches, magazines, and their fashion pages, and advertisement clippings to uncover the social, economic, and political factors at play. By using fashion as a means of expressing cultural, societal, economic, and political goals, the desires of the Nazi government …

Sensorial Interior: Museum Diorama As Phenomenal Space, Sarah Edwards Jul 2018

Sensorial Interior: Museum Diorama As Phenomenal Space, Sarah Edwards

Interiority

Museum dioramas are widely recognised as historic visual tropes used to frame the grandeur of the outside world within an interior viewing space. With the development of digital technologies, data projection and soundscape have increasingly replaced diorama production as a means to transform these once static-animal-posed-in-painted- habitat with immersive interiors that engage the visual and aural senses alike. Andre Breton proposes that two modes of consciousness exist: an exterior world of facts and an interior world of emotions. These interiors and exteriors produce an interface and exchange. An invitation to respond to the interior of RMIT University’s First Site gallery …

The Gospel Of John As Jewish Messianism: Formative Influences And Neglected Avenues In The History Of Scholarship, James F. Mcgrath

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Messianism is sometimes construed broadly in relation to a wide variety of savior figures, but within the context of Judaism, messianism has a more natural narrow focus on anointed figures – and within early Christianity, the Davidic king in particular. The study of the Gospel of John, however, has tended to veer away from focusing on such matters, often based on the conviction that the Gospel itself does likewise. The case can be made, however, that the exalted status of Jesus in the Gospel of John, as one who embodies the divine presence and power, is attributed to him precisely …
