My dear Mr. Muir,
I had already heard of the sudden move to rush the Hetch Hetchy bill through Congress from Mr. Allen Chamberlain, when I received your urgent letter to do something at once. I sent a lettergram to the Committee of Public Lands yesterday and followed it up with additional letters to-day. Mr. Whitman, I understand, went to Washington yesterday. You know what a strong advocate he is.
I hope this sudden move by the selfish San Francisco interests will be nipped in the bud and finished for good. It is disheartening that …

Many thanks for you kind thoughtfulness in sending me the story of your boyhood & youth. It is a really wonderful story of hardship, perserverance & cleverness. BROWNE TEE BELOVED* Francis Fisher Browne, or Browne the Beloved as I like to call him, was one of the finest and rarest men I ever knew. Daring the last five or six years of his life, when I came to know him intimately, my love and admiration have been constantly growing as the noble strength and beauty of his character came more and more clearly to view. I have never ceased to wonder how he was able to do so vast an amount of downright hard work of lasting influence on our literature and at the same time lend …
