Martinez, Sep. 1, 1913.

After finishing enclosed leaflet, over two weeks ago I went to the Harriman Idaho Ranch for a short visit, from which I have just returned. I had good reason to believe that Bade [diacritic] & Colby would have the leaflet ready for distribution by the 20th of last month at latest, but from unaccountable delays it is not yet ready. Bade [diacritic] is writing a book about God & Colby is to be absent from the city & Hetch Hetchy for a month But fortunately Parsons will be back from the north today & we will …

Dear Mr Muir,

I couldn't refrain from passing these letters on to you although I presume you have had equally recent word - Another from Marian was Too blurred by getting wet and had no other news. Mrs Hooker evidently only left them for a few days & enclosed Eellies letter to explain. Marian spoke of you in reference to my lovely glimpse of you in S.F. for which I'm so grateful.
The woods are beautiful, I wish you were with us.

Grabbing The Hetch Hetchy., John Muir

John Muir: A Reading Bibliography by Kimes (Muir articles 1866-1986)

GRABBING THE HETCH HETCHY. With very few exceptions, the newspapers of the country are protesting against the proposed gift of the Hetch Hetchy valley to the city of San Francisco for a water supply. "Of course the San Francisco newspapers champion the project, and so do a few others. But the- overwhelming sentiment, taking the country through, Is manifestly in opposition. ..This valley is now a national park, reserved for that purpose on account of its marvellous scenic beauty. It is the property of the nation, not of the. city Of San Francisco, nor the stale of California. The engineers …

The Hetch-Hetchy bill is one not free from difficulty for me, but I have no doubt that it will pass the House practically as reported by the Committee on Public Lands. I endeavored to name as republican members of that committee very able men, some of whom at least have been quite prominent in opposition to graft legislation. The committee seems to be unanimous. …
