Separation Or Integration? The Russian Mennonite Immigrant Community In Ontario, 1924-45, Henry Paetkau
Digitized Theses
How do ethnic groups survive and maintain their identity when transplanted into an alien cultural environment? That question is one of the major issues in the study of ethnicity. Both historians and sociologists have, in recent years, attempted to understand more clearly and explain more fully the nature and dynamics of ethnic group cohesion and survival. While there is general agreement on the strength and persistence of ethnic peculiarities, there is considerable debate over whether this is due primarily to factors and forces internal or external to the group. What current models and theories designed to understand and explain this …

From Migrant To Millionaire: The Story Of The Italian-American In New Orleans, 1880-1910 (Louisiana)., Roselyn Bologna Boneno
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study explores a history of the Italian immigrants in the New Orleans area between the years 1880-1910. It traces their reasons for coming to the United States, the difficulties faced in assimilation, along with their social, religious, intellectual, political and economic developments. First- and second-generation Italians were personally interviewed in depth, and surveys were given to approximately 186 persons of various Italian societies throughout the defined geographical area. Both the content and the source of respondents' opinions are investigated and explored to discover what correlation existed between the written and the oral explanations. In most respects, no significant differences …

The Girl Scouts In Utah: An Administrative History, 1921-1985, Jennifer L. Lund
The Girl Scouts In Utah: An Administrative History, 1921-1985, Jennifer L. Lund
Theses and Dissertations
Girl Scouting began in Utah in 1921 out of a desire of several wealthy women to help build the character of young girls in Ogden. Exhibiting many elements of the "social gospel" aspect of progressivism, they adopted the Girl Scout program which emphasized preparation for practical living, appreciation of nature, and development of character.
Since the first troops were organized in Ogden, Girl Scouting slowly spread throughout the rest of the state, resulting in several Councils and Lone Troops. After responding to a call for consolidation from the National Girl Scout Council the Utah Scouts made a dramatic change in …
Reflections On Denmark As It Was, And Emigration To America, Arlow W. Andersen
Reflections On Denmark As It Was, And Emigration To America, Arlow W. Andersen
The Bridge
In the late medieval and modern periods the histories of Denmark and Norway paralleled each other. During much of that interval the Union of Kalmar (1397-1523), which included also a dynastic tie with Sweden, practically insured common political, economic, and religious development. On the threshold of the modern age Sweden broke away from the Union (1523), but Norway was obliged to remain under Danish rule until 1814.

Review Of Disputes And Settlements: Law And Human Relations In The West, By J. Bossy, Editor., William I. Miller
Review Of Disputes And Settlements: Law And Human Relations In The West, By J. Bossy, Editor., William I. Miller
Reviews
Evans-Pritchard probably knew he was exaggerating, but not being able to resist the chance to repay a gift in kind, he reversed Maitland's dictum and claimed that history must choose between being social anthropology or being nothing. If we substitute "tedious" for "nothing" we would have a truer statement. Legal history, if not quite heeding Evans-Pritchard, has in the past decade begun to learn some lessons from legal anthropology and the sociology of law. Studies of bureaucratic development, forms of action, formulae and writs, while still flourishing in the hands of several brilliant practitioners, are tending to give way slowly, …

Chinese American Images In Selected Children's Fiction For Kindergarten Through Sixth Grade, Laureen Chew
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to investigate Chinese American images in selected children's fiction to determine whether or not data support the position of the Council on Interracial Books for Children, that the works of fiction studied tend to stereotype Chinese Americans.
After reading the selected fifteen works of fiction, a criterion checklist was devised by the investigator to examine the behavior and lifestyle of Chinese Americans depicted in a variety of circumstances. validity of the criterion checklist was established by a panel of experts in the area of Chinese American studies.
