A History Of The First Unitarian Church Of San Jose, California, Debra N. Dietiker

Master's Theses

The history of the First Unitarian Church of San Jose reveals the church as a microcosm in the macrocosm of Unitarianism and Protestantism in the United States during the last century. Certain themes and tensions have established themselves as they have arisen and been repeated in the history of the San Jose church against the background of Unitarianism and Protestantism in San Jose, in California and in the United States.

The Originality Of Fredrick Jackson Turner As An Historian And Teacher, Norman Gale Lamprey Aug 1965

The Originality Of Fredrick Jackson Turner As An Historian And Teacher, Norman Gale Lamprey

Graduate Student Research Papers

The originality of Frederick Jackson Turner can be recognized against a background consisting of evidence of his contributions to the two fields, history and teaching. The stage will be set by a short biographical treatment of Turner. This avenue of approach will lead to an elaboration of Turner's major historical interpretation. This concept will be described and two subordinate facets of his thesis will be examined briefly. The teaching aspects of Turner's career will be illuminated by analyzing the inseparable historian-teacher relationship and, in addition, the quality and lasting effects of his influence will be treated. It is not the …

Edward Gibbon Wakefield And The Development Of His Theory Of "Systematic Colonization", Robert J. Shultz Jun 1965

Edward Gibbon Wakefield And The Development Of His Theory Of "Systematic Colonization", Robert J. Shultz

Student Work

In the mid-nineteenth century, the British people experienced a revival of interest in expanding their empire. This renewed interest was, in part, a result of the publication of Edward Gibbon Wakefield's book, A Letter From Sydney, in 1829. This remarkable work vividly described the conditions then exisiting in New South Wales, Australia, A British penal colony founded on the coast of Austrailia in 1788. In his work, Wakefield declared that the lack of an adequate labor supply was responsible for most of the misery then prevalent in the Australian settlements. To overcome this deficiency, he propounded a new theory which …

The Political Manifestations Of Ethnocentrism: The French-Canadians In Waterville, Maine, Stuart H. Rakoff May 1965

The Political Manifestations Of Ethnocentrism: The French-Canadians In Waterville, Maine, Stuart H. Rakoff

Senior Scholar Papers

The process of acculturation, seen clearly in the development of the French-Canadians in New England, provides that as contacts to the homeland and ethnic group become more distant and weak with the successive generations, tile individual v1ill become more open to social pressures of the American genre. Politically this means that the ethnic pressures and views which may be prevalent early in the group's American history, will gradually weaken and disappear, being replaced by the traditional appeals of American politics. This ability of the political system to break down and destroy foreign ties has been the central reason for the …

A History Of The Utah State University Elementary Teacher Education Laboratory School, R. Eyre Turner May 1965

A History Of The Utah State University Elementary Teacher Education Laboratory School, R. Eyre Turner

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Utah State University has had a university controlled elementary teacher education laboratory school since 1928. In that year, the University, then the Utah Agricultural College, leased the Whittier School from the Logan City Board of Education. The Whittier continued to be used until the summer of 1957 when the newly constructed Edith Bowen Laboratory School became the center of elementary teacher education.

Staff members in the Department of Education and other interested people have repeatedly asked questions about the Laboratory School. They have desired to know what factors prepared the way and stimulated its establishment. They have sought to …

A History Of The Wpa In Utah, Larry H. Malmgren May 1965

A History Of The Wpa In Utah, Larry H. Malmgren

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During the 7th decade of the twentieth century, a period of prosperity and economic advancement, it is difficult to understand the tragedies of the "Great Depression" that began in the 1920's and lasted until the early 1940's in these United States.

Many of today's fathers and mothers remember their childhood as a period of want hunger because they were "children of the depression." Many grandparents remember the loss of their jobs, empty cupboards, idleness and widespread poverty, because they were the "parents of the depression." In today's society, relief is often taken for granted, and governmental agencies are expected to …

Religious Attitudes In The World Of Humphry Clinker, Byron Gassman Apr 1965

Religious Attitudes In The World Of Humphry Clinker, Byron Gassman

BYU Studies

Tobias Smollett's Expedition of Humphry Clinker provides a vivid and perceptive view of eighteenth-century Scotland and England. Written as a series of letters from a Welshman travelling through Scotland and Ireland, Humphry Clinker reveals Smollett's unease over the political and economic changes in English society. Smollett's religious commentary, although less central than his political commentary, is no less valuable. Smollett's satirical treatment of both the Anglican clergy and the Methodist movement gives modern readers a glimpse of a segment of religious thought in his time.
