Landscape Architecture History: A Critical Review Of Its Curriculum And Teaching Methodology, Robert L. Marshall

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this thesis is to develop criteria for establishing an effective course in teaching history of landscape architecture. Believing that professors, students and practicing landscape architects all have justifiable concerns and comments as to the way history of landscape architecture should be taught, questionnaires were sent to each of these groups across the country. Based on the responses to the questionnaires, coupled with information gleaned from a review of literature and the author's personal teaching experiences, the course criteria is established.

The research showed that it is important that the instructor be able to select historic periods and …

Alcohol Control And Native Alaskans — From The Russians To Statehood: The Early Years — Alcohol Control In Village Alaska, Stephen Conn Apr 1980

Alcohol Control And Native Alaskans — From The Russians To Statehood: The Early Years — Alcohol Control In Village Alaska, Stephen Conn

Reports

A persistent thread throughout the legal history of Alaska since Russian contact with the Great Land until the present has been deployment of available legal resources to curb drinking by Alaska Indians and Eskimos. The long-held social belief on the part of white colonialists and government agents that Alaska Natives could not drink and became wild persons when intoxicated was translated into an unrelenting legal practice of focusing law and available legal resources on control of Native drinking and prosecution of those who supplied Natives with drink. / Even during four periods of territory-wide prohibition, the prohibition was enforced against …

The Confederate Defense Of Mobile, 1861-1865. (Volumes I-Ii)., Arthur William Bergeron Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The people of Mobile, Alabama, supported the secession of their state from the Union in January 1861, and thousands of her able-bodied men served in the Confederate army from 1861 to 1865. Recognizing the city's strategic importance as a port and major railroad center connecting the eastern and western sections of the new nation, the Confederate government moved quickly to provide adequate defenses for Mobile. Confederate soldiers occupied and began to strengthen Fort Morgan and Fort Gaines, which guarded the main channels leading into Mobile Bay. The Confederate Navy Department converted several steamers into gunboats and began construction of four …

The Suffolk Campaign A Case Study, Brian S. Wills Dec 1979

The Suffolk Campaign A Case Study, Brian S. Wills

Honors Theses

"the Suffolk Campaign: A Case Study," covers the Civil War that began on April 11, 1863 and ended on May 3, 1863 and centered around the small Tidewater Virginia town of Suffolk. Suffolk's strategic prominence was derived from its access to the James River, through tributary (the Nansemond), and two major railroads which ran through the town--the Petersburg and Norfolk, and the Roanoke and Seaboard. The Confederates abandoned the town after McClellan's Peninsula Campaign made their position their untenable. Federal troops quickly entered Suffolk and established it as the first line of defense for Norfolk. Suffolk came under the military …
