A History Of Dalhousie Law School, L. E. Rozovsky, F. A. Rozovsky
Dalhousie Law Journal
As the author is at pains to tell us at the very beginning, this is not an earth-shaking book. Furthermore, Professor Willis states in his preface that the project was started by the late Dean Emeritus Horace Read and thus is the work of two hands; if Willis himself had originated the project, "The book I should like to have written about the Dalhousie Law School would be something very different from this .. ." At that point, the reviewer felt some unease about the task at hand. He need not have worried: the history is a successful and worthwhile …

History Of Animal Experimentation Control In The U.K., Judith E. Hampson
History Of Animal Experimentation Control In The U.K., Judith E. Hampson
Laws and Legislation Collection
The legislative control of the use of animals in experiments in the UK lies in the Cruelty to Animals Act of 1876. Animal Welfare groups and individuals in Britain have pressed for reform of this law almost since its inception 105 years ago, and the British government has recently agreed to bring this legislation up to date. Any new or amended legislation could have far-reaching implications, both for laboratory animal welfare and upon the scientific community and is therefore of considerable importance both in this country and overseas. No proper appreciation of the problem would be possible without reference to …

The Role Of Law, Theodore J. St. Antoine
The Role Of Law, Theodore J. St. Antoine
Book Chapters
In the early New Deal days, workers' placards in the coal fields proudly proclaimed, "President Roosevelt wants you to join the union." If not literally true, that boast was well within the bounds of poetic license. After the brief interval of federal laissez-faire treatment of labor relations ushered in by the Norris-La Guardia Act of 1932, the National Labor Relations (Wagner) Act of 1935 declared the policy of the United States to be one of "encouraging the practice and procedure of collective bargaining." Employers, but not unions, were forbidden to coerce or discriminate against employees because of their organizational activities. …
Status And Prestige As A Factor In Brazilian Foreign Policy, 1905-1908., William Neal Nelson
Status And Prestige As A Factor In Brazilian Foreign Policy, 1905-1908., William Neal Nelson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study traces the two traditional Brazilian foreign policy objectives of securing recognition as an important member of the international community, and friendship with the United States, during the period 1905-1908. These two objectives are examined in the light of Brazilian concern for status and prestige at the personal, national, and international levels. The themes of gaining international recognition, and Brazilian-American friendship are interwoven with the interpersonal relations that developed on the occasion of the Second Hague Peace Conference. The Second Hague Conference (1907) was the first global meeting in which Brazil was represented. It was an opportunity for Brazil …
A History Of Jefferson Barracks, 1826-1860., Byron Bertrand Banta Jr
A History Of Jefferson Barracks, 1826-1860., Byron Bertrand Banta Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Jefferson Barracks was established in 1826 and was one of the army's major posts until 1860. Located twenty-six miles below the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers, the Barracks served as a concentration point for supplies for the various army installations in the Missouri River valley and along the upper Mississippi and its tributaries. When Jefferson Barracks was established, the army intended for the post to act as the Infantry School of Instruction, but the School was never formally organized. The first soldiers stationed at the post were required to construct their own barracks and other auxillary buildings, and …
The Origins And Development Of The Gentlemanly Ideal In The South: 1607-1865., Robert Lynn Rainard
The Origins And Development Of The Gentlemanly Ideal In The South: 1607-1865., Robert Lynn Rainard
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study is to examine the origins and development of the gentleman in the South. It begins with an examination of Castiglione's The Courtier. Castiglione provided a discussion of the ideal man of Renaissance Italy. His ideal man, the courtier, possessed cultivation, character, and class. Together, these attributes made up the complete, or universal man. The Renaissance idea of the complete man profoundly influenced all later thought concerning the nature of the gentleman. The English embraced Castiglione's idea of a complete man, but they immediately adapted it to suit their own needs. The English placed much greater …
