Study Of The Pioneers Of Providence, Utah And Their Children, Hazel Mclean Tibbitts Jan 1988

Study Of The Pioneers Of Providence, Utah And Their Children, Hazel Mclean Tibbitts

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis poses a number of questions about the pioneers and their decendants: Where did the pioneer settlers of Providence come from? What skills and resources did they bring with them to "tame" the wilderness? Did they come as family units or as single men? What happened as the community grew and the resources were limited? Where did the settlers go or what did they do as the land became scarce? Was limited land the reason for the movement out of the community or were there other considerations? What effects did emigration have on the family ties of the second …

Martyrs For The Faith, John W. Carven C.M. Oct 1987

Martyrs For The Faith, John W. Carven C.M.

Vincentian Studies

During the French Revolution, two Daughters of Charity, Marie-Anne Vaillot and Odile Baumgarten, were executed by firing squad for refusing to take an oath of loyalty to the state. Three sisters of their house did take the oath; Vaillot and Baumgarten were executed to intimidate the rest of the sisters in to following suit. As they were taken to the execution site, they inspired and strengthened their fellow prisoners and refused a last-minute offer that would have saved their lives. Other persecution of the Daughters of Charity is recounted.

Water as a Public Resource: Emerging Rights and Obligations (Summer Conference, June 1-3)

Conference organizers and/or faculty included University of Colorado School of Law professors Lawrence J. MacDonnell, David H. Getches, and Charles F. Wilkinson.

This conference focused on the legal rights associated with a broad range of public uses and interests in water including recreation, fish and wildlife protection, and water quality. Evolving legal areas such as the public trust doctrine, instream flow laws, federal reserved rights, and wetlands protection were discussed.

Water as a Public Resource: Emerging Rights and Obligations considered the extension of the public trust doctrine to areas previously not covered by this concept, as well as developments in …

Seventeenth-Century New England And New France In Comparative Perspective: Notre Dame Des Anges---A Case Study, Mary Ann La Fleur Jan 1987

Seventeenth-Century New England And New France In Comparative Perspective: Notre Dame Des Anges---A Case Study, Mary Ann La Fleur

Doctoral Dissertations

This work is a comparison of New England and New France in northeast North America in the seventeenth century. The study of New England relies on secondary works while the study of New France uses primary material. The seigneurie of Notre Dame des Anges, located north of Quebec City, was used as the basis of this study. The questions asked in this study are: Was culture or the environment the most significant factor in the establishing of colonies in the New World? Who were the people who came from England and France? What was the character of those who stayed …

The Ronson Ship: The Study Of An Eighteenth-Century Merchantman Excavated In Manhattan, New York In 1982, Warren Curtis Riess Jan 1987

The Ronson Ship: The Study Of An Eighteenth-Century Merchantman Excavated In Manhattan, New York In 1982, Warren Curtis Riess

Doctoral Dissertations

During a pre-construction archaeological investigation at 175 Water Street, Manhattan, New York in 1982, excavators discovered an eighteenth-century merchant ship. The port side of the ship was excavated and recorded and the bow was taken apart and saved. Since that time historical and archaeological studies have been conducted to interpret the site to glean information about eighteenth-century technology and economics. The remains of this ship are particularly important because no draft or other remains of early eighteenth-century transatlantic merchantmen have been discovered.

The ship appears to be a Virginia-built ship which sailed between the Chesapeake and England or Scotland carrying …

An Examination Of The Mormon Settlement Of Syracuse, Utah, J. Kent Tucker Jan 1987

An Examination Of The Mormon Settlement Of Syracuse, Utah, J. Kent Tucker

Theses and Dissertations

The history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly referred to as the "Mormon" church, has been well researched, yet little has been written about individual community histories. This work centers on the small Mormon community of Syracuse, Utah, located about twenty-five miles north of Salt Lake City on the eastern shore of the Great Salt Lake. From its inception in 1877 through 1987, the community of Syracuse continues to be dominated by the Latter-day Saint (Mormon) influence. This thesis examines the development of this LDS Church settlement, giving emphasis to the early history of the area, …

David Baltimore Oral History, David Baltimore Nov 1986

David Baltimore Oral History, David Baltimore

Oral History Collection

Susan Mehrtens' Note:

We met in Dr. Baltimore's office at the Whitehead Institute, and our meeting was short (less than 45 minutes) but direct and to the point: Baltimore credits The Jackson Laboratory for setting him on his course as a biologist, but beyond that, he sees Jax as a dated, low-key place. One speaking engagement at Jax that left him astonished to see an empty parking lot at 5PM made an indelible impression on him and he echoes the attitudes of others outside Jax--like Law and Sprott--that Jax is not a dynamic, hotshot institution on the cutting edge of …

Barbara Sanford Oral History, Barbara Sanford Nov 1986

Barbara Sanford Oral History, Barbara Sanford

Oral History Collection

Susan Mehrtens' Note:

Barbara Sanford's interview echoes most of what I have heard from many of the staff regarding the Lab's mission and goals. The Lab's ideal size, geographical location--with its pluses and minuses--and the environment in which to do science in the current period--all find echoes on other tapes. There is little of candor, consequence or calculation here. Sanford clearly recognizes the stressful nature of scientific life in these times of federal cutbacks, and, as well, the frustrations of directing a laboratory whose size, complexity and needs preclude personal scientific work by the Director. In the face of such …

Donald Bailey Oral History, Donald Bailey Nov 1986

Donald Bailey Oral History, Donald Bailey

Oral History Collection

Susan Metrhens' Note:

Regarded by many of his peers at Jax as one of the most intuitive, prescient and creative scientists at the Lab, Bailey was a very reflective narrator. While he provides one anecdote of c.c. Little1s sartorial habits, this tape is largely devoid of anecdotal material, and is more a reminiscence by a scientist who was at Jax in the early '50's, who left and returned in 1967. I tried, through a variety of questions, to probe the synergy between Bailey and the Lab, the degree to which his prescience and creativity might be due to the freedom …

Priscilla "Skippy" Lane Oral History, Skippy Lane Nov 1986

Priscilla "Skippy" Lane Oral History, Skippy Lane

Oral History Collection

Susan Mehrtens' Note:

We have in this tape the recollections of one of the most prolific authors in the field of mouse mutants, an indefatigable co-worker of Margaret Dickey, Margaret Green and currently, Muriel Davison. Full of scientific terms, this tape reveals clearly Lane's thorough absorption in the field to which she has devoted nearly the last forty years of her life. Toward the end of this tape, Lane alludes to Earl Green's sexist attitude, which other women have also mentioned to me on and off tape. Lane also waxes eloquently here about her efforts to establish a hiera'rchy within …

The Sisters And The Soldiers, Virginia Walcott Beauchamp Ph.D. Oct 1986

The Sisters And The Soldiers, Virginia Walcott Beauchamp Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

The Sisters of Charity of Saint Joseph’s Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland ministered to both sides before and after the Battle of Gettysburg. This was amid expectations that the conflict would destroy their house and challenges in maintaining their students’ safety. Before the battle, the sisters provided food and a place to rest for the Union soldiers and the same for the Confederates after the Union army departed. They clothed, fed, and nursed members of each force after the battle. Such charity provided an antidote to anti-Catholic prejudice, which helped the sisters themselves when they were the defendants in a spurious …
