Tinkling Cymbals And Sounding Brass: The Art Of Telling Tales About Joseph Smith And Brigham Young, Hugh Nibley Jan 1991

Tinkling Cymbals And Sounding Brass: The Art Of Telling Tales About Joseph Smith And Brigham Young, Hugh Nibley

Maxwell Institute Publications

The apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthians, “Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal” (1 Corinthians 13:1). Since then, the terms “tinkling cymbals” and “sounding brass” have often been used to signify words of emptiness and confusion – describing perfectly most writings critical of the Latter-day Saints. Trained in history and interested in classical rhetoric, Hugh Nibley brings a broad perspective to his study of anti-Mormon writings.

1986-89, Elleda Katan Jan 1991

1986-89, Elleda Katan

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Reflecting upon the Caucus is for me a bit like reflecting upon an event like giving birth. Your work/body is taken over by larger forces. Your biography divides itself into pre and post. You can never again be who you were. And yet what is the Caucus on Social Theory? What's to be learned about it from that short period of "history" during which I worked as Coordinator {1986-89}?

Origins, Bob Bersson Jan 1991

Origins, Bob Bersson

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

An organization is frequently founded when Iike-minded people come together around issues and goals they feel strongly about. That is exactly how The Social Theory Caucus came about. We, as socially progressive, critically minded individuals, found each other so we could form an organizational home and agency of change within the National Art Education Association. Needless to say, no other organization within the art education profession was fulfilling those two functions for us.

Dr. Nancy R. Johnson, Karen A. Hamblen Jan 1991

Dr. Nancy R. Johnson, Karen A. Hamblen

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Dr. Nancy R. Johnson served as the Coordinator of the Caucus from 1983 to 1987. In that sense, she is a factual part of the history of the Caucus, and she needs to be mentioned in any discussion of how the Caucus was founded and how it developed. I believe, however, that Nancy's career and her association with the Caucus are more significant than the facts of the matter or even what she accomplished as Coordinator; rather, her career and what she valued are paradigmatic in many ways of why the Caucus was formed and why it continued to include …

The Clan Of Toil: Piney Woods Labor Relations In The Trans-Mississippi South, 1880-1920. (Volumes I-Iii)., John Reed Tarver Jan 1991

The Clan Of Toil: Piney Woods Labor Relations In The Trans-Mississippi South, 1880-1920. (Volumes I-Iii)., John Reed Tarver

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Lumber boomed in the Reconstructed South, an industrial binge that, by 1920, changed the landscape, first removing the forest then replacing its subsistence economy with consumerism. Men with money made fortunes in lumber. West of the Mississippi and south of the Missouri, it became a bonanza by 1880. Within these boundaries, black and white farmers and field hands sought "public work" in sawmills and log fronts. Most were unskilled. Steam power changed their lives, although all did not respond alike. They kept their folk ways, consistent with the new industry, despite their bondage to machines. Although most workers voluntarily entered …

Review Of Cardozo: A Study In Reputation, By R. Posner, Richard D. Friedman Jan 1991

Review Of Cardozo: A Study In Reputation, By R. Posner, Richard D. Friedman

Reviews

Judge Richard Posner has written a genial book about one of our greatest judicial icons, Benjamin N. Cardozo.1 He seeks not only to assess the merits of Cardozo's writings, both on and off the bench, but also to measure, and determine the causes of, Cardozo's reputation. The book is an outgrowth of a lecture series,2 and it reveals its origins in at least two ways. First, the book attempts to reach a mixed audience, composed of both lawyers and laypeople, and in this aspect it is very successful. Nonlawyers, I believe, will have little difficulty following Judge Posner's essential arguments, …
