Crime And Punishment In New Hampshire, 1812-1914 (Volumes I And Ii), Timothy Dodge
Crime And Punishment In New Hampshire, 1812-1914 (Volumes I And Ii), Timothy Dodge
Doctoral Dissertations
Changing definitions of crime accompanied the economic transformation of seacoast New Hampshire from a predominently agricultural, and rural society in 1812 to one that was mainly industrial, commercial, and urban by 1914. This dissertation analyzes a sample of 820 felony incarcerations (19.5%) of the total 4154 incarcerations recorded at the New Hampshire State Prison for the period 1812-1914. Court bills and indictments of Rockingham and Strafford County, New Hampshire are used to analyze felony convictions. Quantitative analysis involving 17 variables reveals that property crime was the most common conviction. Felony conviction rates per 100,000 population nearly doubled between 1812 and …

To Rend And Teare The Bodies Of Men: Theology And The Body In Demonic Possession; France, England, And Puritan America, 1550-1700, Julianne Siudowski Cooper-Forst
Doctoral Dissertations
During the Reformation, Protestants attempted to recast their theology in opposition to the Roman Catholic system. They succeeded in most areas. There was, however, one area of theology where this was not true: demonology and spiritual possession. Incidents of demonic possession rose during the second quarter of the sixteenth century, reached a crescendo by the first quarter of the seventeenth century, and except for a flurry or two, died out near the beginning of the eighteenth century. This dissertation examines the published materials relating to the physical phenomena of demonic possession in France, England, and Puritan America from the sixteenth …

Schema Theory And Application For The Content Teacher, June Allen Carpenter Darling
All Graduate Projects
Schema theory, research, and implications for the classroom were studied. Based on research, teacher resources, and curriculum demands, instruction was designed for a secondary teacher of United States History. During a workshop, four secondary teachers from three districts reacted to research and instruction. A video tape was developed showing schema theory concepts, related research, application for the content teacher, and reactions from secondary teachers. Implications for the content teacher are discussed.

The Sleeper Wakes: The History And Legacy Of The Twenty-Seventh Amendment
The Sleeper Wakes: The History And Legacy Of The Twenty-Seventh Amendment
Fordham Law Review
No provision of the United States Constitution has a more drawn-out, tortured history than the Twenty-seventh Amendment, which was ratified more than two centuries after Representative James Madison introduced it in the First Congress. In this Article; Professor Bernstein traces the Amendment's origins to the legislative political culture of the late eighteenth century, as influenced by the controversy over ratifying the Constitution. He then examines the perennial controversies over congressional compensation in American historiy elucidating how in the 1980s and 1990s public anger at Congress reached critical mass sufficient to propel the 1789 compensation amendment into the Constitution. Finally, this …

The Value Of Hebeler Children's School, Janet Lucille Smith
All Master's Theses
This thesis consists of a historical review of laboratory schools at Central Washington University. It is supplemented by the results of two informal surveys of in-service teachers who graduated from Central, along with present and retired faculty, administrators, teachers, and others connected and concerned with the education of teachers (see Appendices A and B). The surveys focus on the perception of the role of laboratory school experience in teacher preparation. Also included are interviews and correspondence with persons connected to Central and its laboratory schools (see Appendix C). Recommendations were given for opportunity to explore, study and identify the roles …
Saturday's Women: Female Characters As Angels And Monsters In Saturday's Warrior And Reunion, Nola Diane Smith
Saturday's Women: Female Characters As Angels And Monsters In Saturday's Warrior And Reunion, Nola Diane Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Using theories of feminist criticism as explained by Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar, the study concludes that both Saturday's Warrior, a "home literature" style play, and Reunion, a more artistically challenging play, reflect repressive cultural images of women. Both plays cast female characters into the roles of passive Angel, domestic Angel/Monster, and active Monster.
Marital Property Rights In Transition, Lawrence W. Waggoner
Marital Property Rights In Transition, Lawrence W. Waggoner
Articles
The subject of "marital property rights" is very timely because those rights are in a state of transition. The term "marital property rights" covers a vast multitude of rights or interests conferred by law on persons who occupy the status of spouse. This lecture is divided into four discrete, yet related segments. The first segment addresses how the law allocates original ownership between spouses in a marriage. The second segment turns to the intestate share of the surviving spouse. This is not a topic that high-powered estate planners get involved in very much because intestate estates are usually fairly small. …
Psychology, David E. Leary
Psychology, David E. Leary
Psychology Faculty Publications
Although the discipline of psychology, in its contemporary form, is only a century old, psychology's historical antecedents reach back to the beginnings of civilization. Whether defined as the study of the soul or the study of human faculties, as it was in earlier times, or as the study of consciousness, mind, or behavior, as it has been over the past hundred years, psychology has dealt with some of the fundamental questions and issues pertaining to the functions, processes, and mechanisms of human and animal nature.

Pistols And Politics: Planter And Plain Folk Relations In The Piney Woods South, The Florida Parishes Of Louisiana, 1810-1899. (Volumes I And Ii)., Samuel Claiborne Hyde Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Florida parishes of Louisiana experienced a peculiar pattern of development. Following successive periods of English and Spanish domination and an armed insurrection resulting in the shortlived Republic of West Florida, the region stabilized under the control of delta parish planters. A fierce tradition of Jeffersonian republican values encouraged the plain folk to assert themselves politically during the 1830's and 1840's. Yet by employing a series of enemies common to southern whites, and by expanding their control over the means of access to market, the planters stifled the aspirations of the plain folk insuring white unity on the eve of …
Abstract Democracy: A Review Of Ackerman's We The People, Terrance Sandalow
Abstract Democracy: A Review Of Ackerman's We The People, Terrance Sandalow
Reviews
We the People: Foundations is an ambitious book, the first of three volumes in which Professor Ackerman proposes to recast conventional understanding of and contemporary debate about American constitutional law. Unfortunately, the book's rhetoricinflated, self-important, and self-congratulatory-impedes the effort to come to terms with its argument. How, for example, does one respond to a book that opens by asking whether the reader will have "the strength" to accept its thesis? Or that announces the author's intention of "engaging" two of the most influential works of intellectual history of the past several decades-and then discusses one in two and one-half pages …

"Caritas Christi Urget Nos": The Urgent Challenges Of Charity In Seventeenth Century France, Edward R. Udovic C.M., Ph.D.
Vincentian Studies
A 1656 royal decree outlawed begging and private almsgiving in Paris and forcibly confined persons who were poor in various institutions of the General Hospital. These measures were later mandated throughout France until 1715. The poor were treated as enemies of the state because of their numbers and the violence, crime, and social unrest that accompanied poverty. This was a radical shift in society’s perspective. During the Age of Faith, poverty was a sign of election since Christ chose to be poor. The poor had a right to seek charity and the rich were obligated to give it. In the …
