Representing The Promotional University: Undergraduate Student Recruitment Strategies In Ontario, 1997- 2007, Lindsay Carrocci Jan 2009

Representing The Promotional University: Undergraduate Student Recruitment Strategies In Ontario, 1997- 2007, Lindsay Carrocci

Digitized Theses

This thesis explores the promotional activities of five Ontario universities, bringing together scholarly work in history, education, marketing, consumer culture, semiotics, representation, and ideology to consider how institutions portray themselves to prospective undergraduate students. Visually and textually, each institution now constructs a brand, positions itself competitively, and shapes the ways in which it desires to be perceived. In promotional materials, universities attempt to balance conflicting roles as both cultivators of culture and the liberal arts, as well as centers of innovation and training in the “knowledge economy.” It is concluded that, in promotional materials, universities take the rhetorical middle ground, …

The Antioch Debacle: A Corporatist Misadventure In Higher Education, Kerstin Cornell Jan 2009

The Antioch Debacle: A Corporatist Misadventure In Higher Education, Kerstin Cornell

Digitized Theses

In June of 2007 the Antioch University Board of Trustees announced a unilateral decision to close Antioch College, a school with a 150-year legacy of cultural and educational innovation. This thesis seeks to situate this closure within the framework of current trends in higher education, and to illustrate how a radical institution fell prey to the logic of late capitalism. Through a close reading of texts produced by Antioch University, Antioch College, and U.S. media, I examine differing interpretations regarding the purpose, function, and role of institutions of higher education. Ultimately, I contend that the struggle to save the College …

Developing And Leading The Quality Enhancement Planning Committee, L. Waller, Cristal Joslin, Calvin Green

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Quality enhancement in higher education is rapidly emerging as a major national and international issue. Rahman (2005) identifies an international movement to promote quality enhancement through “accreditation councils, degree program standardization, quality enhancement cells, quality faculty, and curriculum review.” According to Rahman, the movement is intended to develop “a vision for the higher education system with quality, equity, and efficiency.” Rahman also points out that the United States faces the need to evaluate the validity and quality of accreditation processes in light of the increase in dot-com universities and diploma mills. El-Khawas (1998) indicates that world-wide attention has shifted to …

Employers' Perceptions Of Online Degree Programs, Judith C. Simon, Jollean K. Sinclaire, Lloyd D. Brooks, Ronald B. Wilkes

Faculty Publications

The opportunities for students to take courses, and entire degree programs, online continue to increase, as many traditional colleges and universities have developed programs to compete with for-profit online schools that have proliferated in recent years. In 2003, The Wall Street Journal reported “an estimated 350,000 students are enrolled in fully online degree programs” (Dunham, 2003). In 2005, it was estimated that “more than 1 million students are seeking degrees entirely via the Web” (Tosto, 2005). According to Eduventures, “growth rates for online higher education greatly exceed those projected for U.S. postsecondary education overall (approximately 2%), positioning online higher education …

On The Humanities, Edward L. Ayers

History Faculty Publications

Although humanists have tended to dwell on simple dichotomies as the source of our problems - the humanities versus virtually any other field of inquiry, scholarship versus teaching, specialization versus public reach, and innovation versus tradition - the real challenge to the humanities lies elsewhere.

Where The Humanities Live, Edward L. Ayers

History Faculty Publications

The humanities play an important role at every kind of institution. Approximately 40 percent of all undergraduate humanities degrees come from large research universities, where they account for about 15 percent of all bachelor's degrees. The United States stands in the top third of the percentage of degrees awarded in the humanities and the arts internationally, ranking with Germany and Denmark. English remains the dominant major, producing about a third of all bachelor's degrees in the humanities, followed by general humanities and liberal studies with 26 percent, and history with 18 percent.

Dissertations

Responding to Vatican concerns and Daniel A. Lord, S.J.'s national Sodality initiatives, in 1927 Loyola University administrators expanded the student Sodality's newly-established Catholic Action program into a hegemonic presence, not only on the Loyola Arts campus, but throughout Chicago's network of Catholic schools. By 1928 Loyola students headed a federation of 52 Chicago-area Catholic universities, colleges, and high schools, initially known as the Chicago Intercollegiate Conference on Religious Activities (CISCORA). Under Vatican pressure to reaffirm the bishop's catechetical role, six years later Chicago Auxiliary Bishop Bernard Sheil adopted the federation--renamed Chicago Inter-Student Catholic Action (CISCA)--as the official student Catholic Action …

Teaching on ASEAN as an institution, a process and a region, and the holding of ASEAN Studies Programme at postgraduate level in universities and institutions of higher learning in the ASEAN region could help promote greater awareness of ASEAN – an issue that has been plaguing ASEAN as an association ever since its establishment over 41 years ago. A good awareness of ASEAN is a pre-requisite for inculcating a regional identity and solidarity towards achieving the ASEAN Community 2015. Realizing this, currently, several universities in the region are attempting to offer courses and programmes on ASEAN as well as setting …

Assessing University Strategic Plans: A Tool For Consideration, Shannon Chance, Brenda T. Williams Jan 2009

Assessing University Strategic Plans: A Tool For Consideration, Shannon Chance, Brenda T. Williams

Articles

This article explores the use of rubrics as tools for assessing the quality of university-developed strategic plans. While tools exist for assessing the quality of the planning process, such tools are not readily available for assessing the resulting product or the overall quality of the plan itself. Specifi cally, a rubric is described that has been designed and fi eld-tested for the purpose of evaluating the strategic planning document produced at the university level. This approach builds upon outcome assessment methods developed in the business sector and proposes a tool tailored for use in higher education.

Community-Engaged Scholarship In Ffigher Education: An Expanding Experience, Judith A. Ramaley Jan 2009

Community-Engaged Scholarship In Ffigher Education: An Expanding Experience, Judith A. Ramaley

Higher Education

Higher education in this country has always been expected to serve the public good. Sometimes, the emphasis is on preparing educated citizens or practitioners in especially critical fields and how public service can deepen and enrich learning and prepare students to lead purposeful, responsible, and creative lives. Sometimes the focus is upon institutions themselves as major intellectual and cultural resources for a community. In this paper, based on the keynote presentation at the Community Engaged Scholarship for Health Collaborative's invitational symposium, the author explores four levels of engagement: the individual, the academic community and its concepts of scholarship, the institution …

In response to Kimberly West-Faulcon, The River Runs Dry: When Title VI Trumps State Anti–Affirmative Action Laws, 157 U. PA. L. REV. 1075 (2009).

Professor Kimberly West-Faulcon has identified a tension between state anti-affirmative action laws and the continued enrollment of minority students in public universities, and the author argues the tension is not surprising, because the voter initiatives that led to those state anti-affirmative action laws were transparently motivated by white majoritarian desires to reduce minority student enrollment in public universities. He feels what is surprising, however, is Professor West-Faulcon’s suggestion that state anti-affirmative action laws can themselves …

Collaboration, Commitment, And Communication: Tales From The Road Of Continuous Performance Improvement, M. Therese Antone, Rsm Jan 2009

Collaboration, Commitment, And Communication: Tales From The Road Of Continuous Performance Improvement, M. Therese Antone, Rsm

Faculty and Staff - Articles & Papers

Performance in higher education is strongly tied to accountability—accountability that goes beyond financial matters and includes assessment of academic achievement. The demands of accountability, both from the faculty and from the institution, are critical performance requirements for the higher education industry. In the past, institutional performance or success was very often measured by endowment, the number of student applications, the rate of matriculation from that application pool, and the graduation rate. Higher education has moved far beyond that for a real assessment of performance.

How Do You Know That? An Investigation Of Student Research Practices In The Digital Age, Randall Mcclure, Kellian Clink

Library Services Publications

This study investigates the types of sources that English composition students use in their research essays. Unlike previous studies, this project pairs an examination of source citations with deeper analysis of source use, and both are discussed in relation to responses gathered in focus groups with participating students and teachers. The researchers examine how students negotiate locating and using source material, particularly online sources, in terms of timeliness, authority, and bias. The researchers report on how teachers struggle to introduce these concepts and how students fail to perceive authority and bias in their sources.

An Investigation Of Scholar-Baller And Non Scholar-Baller Division I Football Student-Athletes' Academic, Athletic, Intrinsic Motivation And Athletic Identity, Janet Rasmussen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As less than 3 % of student-athletes go on to play sport professionally, it is important that they are prepared for careers outside of athletics (Susanj & Stewart, 2005). Many football student-athletes have low grade point averages and graduation rates. Universities incorporate academic motivational programs to help combat low academic performance. One unique program, Scholar-Baller, utilizes popular culture within its curriculum to bridge the gap between academics and athletics. This dissertation examined the differences between Scholar-Baller and Non Scholar-Baller Division I football student-athletes' motivation (academic, athletic, intrinsic) and athletic identity using expectancy-value theory and self-affirmation theory as its framework. In …

Psychological Sense Of Community And Retention: Rethinking The First-Year Experience Of Students In Stem, Melissa Dagley Falls

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This investigation looks at the relationship between a STEM learning community's co-curricular activities and students' perceived sense of community (SOC)to determine which activities most influence SOC and, in turn, retention. This investigation shows that SOC can be impacted by a multitude of factors found within the college environment. The most influential of these factors are open acceptance, student academic support services, and residential experiences. Most importantly there were significant differences for African American students participating in the STEM learning community on the measures of SOC, retention, and being on-track in mathematics. Additional data suggested higher levels of being on-track in …

Why The Old Traditions Will Not Fail: Landscape, Legends, And The Construction Of Place At Dartmouth College, Charles H. Wade

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Dartmouth College, located in Hanover, New Hampshire, is one of the nine Colonial Colleges and a member of the exclusive Ivy League. Congregationalist minister Eleazar Wheelock founded Dartmouth in 1769 on the premise of training missionaries to Christianize the Indians of the region and, over the years, Dartmouth developed into a premier college. Dartmouth is famous for its traditions, its ardently loyal alumni, and as a classic New England liberal arts college. But this image does not correspond with a closer, more critical look at the College. Through both archival and ethnographic research, this dissertation examines the cultural landscape, folklore, …
