Openness, Dynamic Specialization, And The Disaggregated Future Of Higher Education, John Hilton Iii, David Wiley Nov 2009

Openness, Dynamic Specialization, And The Disaggregated Future Of Higher Education, John Hilton Iii, David Wiley

Faculty Publications

Openness is a fundamental value underlying significant changes in society and is a prerequisite to changes institutions of higher education need to make in order to remain relevant to the society in which they exist. There are a number of ways institutions can be more open, including programs of open sharing of educational materials. Individual faculty can also choose to be more open without waiting for institutional programs. Increasing degrees of openness in society coupled with innovations in business strategy like dynamic specialization are enabling radical experiments in higher education and exerting increasing competitive pressure on conventional higher education institutions. …

An In-Depth Study Of Assesing The Factors Affecting Higher Education In South-East Asia: A Case Study Of Two Universities, Edward Sek Khin Wong, Teoh Ngee Heng

The South East Asian Journal of Management

The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not selected factors are related to faculty job satisfaction and dissatisfaction at two selected private unversities in South-East Asia. It is an attempt to find out how faculty members feel about their jobs. What pleases them in their work? What are the intrinsic rewards they attain? What brings dissatisfaction or tends to frustrate them? Hence, this study employs the Herzberg Two-Factor theory to determine how selected factors are related to job satisfaction of university faculty members. The conclusions drawn from this study are that the major sources of job satisfaction …

Why & How Instructors Grade Participation In, Susan L. Rogers Oct 2009

Why & How Instructors Grade Participation In, Susan L. Rogers

NERA Conference Proceedings 2009

Although active engagement and participation in college courses has been shown to lead to increased learning (Weaver & Qi, 2005), instructors often struggle to get their students to participate more in class. This issue is sometimes addressed by including "participation" in grading criteria. The current study investigates this convention by identifying current instructor attitudes and practices towards grading student participation in undergraduate classrooms. To this end, a survey has been created and piloted amongst university instructors of varying disciplines. Data is presented in the context of current literature, and relationships between attitudes and practices in grading participation will be explored.

What Color Is Your Paratext?, Geoffrey Bilder, Andrée J. Rathemacher Oct 2009

What Color Is Your Paratext?, Geoffrey Bilder, Andrée J. Rathemacher

Technical Services Faculty Publications

In the final vision session of the 2009 NASIG Annual Conference, Geoffrey Bilder from CrossRef discussed the problem of how to identify trustworthy scholarly information on the Internet. This problem is exacerbated by readers’ growing distrust of intermediaries such as publishers and librarians, by the fact that the Internet lacks the traditions that have developed in scholarly communication to ensure trust, and by the sheer amount of information now readily available. Paratext is understood as anything outside of a text that sets expectations about that text. In the past, paratext, for example a publisher logo, provided important clues as to …

Coaching Educational Leaders, Jothany Blackwood Oct 2009

Coaching Educational Leaders, Jothany Blackwood

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

As institutions of higher learning respond to the rapidly changing demographics of its administrators, they must continuously find processes that improve the performance and effectiveness of these individuals. They must also begin to understand how the integration of coaching and/or mentoring shapes educational leaders and their institutions. From developing administrator’s potential to work well with others and strengthen communication, coaching also access to mobility, career advancements, promotions and pay increases. Quality Assurance In Education Through Quality Circles – Global And Indian Context, Uma Devi, R.S. Mani Oct 2009

Quality Assurance In Education Through Quality Circles – Global And Indian Context, Uma Devi, R.S. Mani

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Since Independence, the education, particularly the higher education in India has undergone a unique transformation from elitist to egalitarian group. There has been the expansion of higher education facilities in India since independence. We can see the expansion of higher education with increasing speed day by day in the context of globalization, liberalization and privatization. But a big question in front of us is whether the quality is ensured or not. It is saddening to note that 128 universities who got themselves accredited by the NAAC only 32 per cent could get ‘A’ or above level of rating while another …

Rotating-Term Associate Deans: Pathway To Higher Education Administration, Eugenia Gerdes, Christopher Zappe Oct 2009

Rotating-Term Associate Deans: Pathway To Higher Education Administration, Eugenia Gerdes, Christopher Zappe

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

In a recent article in this journal, Betts, Urias, Chavez, and Betts (2009) argue that higher education faces a leadership shortage—due both to expected turnover in senior administrative positions and to lack of clear pathways into administration. As we have discussed elsewhere (Zappe & Gerdes, 2008), administration is not typically a long-term goal for those whose careers begin with faculty appointments. For the few who switch pathways to become academic administrators, an associate dean position often is the point of transition. Below, we describe the advantages of rotating associate dean positions, in which faculty members from the same institution leave …

Higher Education And The Society For Neuroscience: A Website Proposal That Helped Catalyze A Change In Policy, Richard F. Olivo Oct 2009

Higher Education And The Society For Neuroscience: A Website Proposal That Helped Catalyze A Change In Policy, Richard F. Olivo

Neuroscience: Faculty Publications

In the spring of 2007, the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) did not include support for higher education as a priority in its strategic plan. By the spring of 2009, its priorities had changed. One catalyst for that change was a proposal for a website that would list, review, and rate resources for teaching neuroscience at the graduate and undergraduate level. The proposal was sent to and accepted by SfN Council in August 2008; by spring 2009, SfN had taken initial steps to implement it. Two documents are presented here that mark the change in policy: the website proposal, and SfN …
