Institutional Ethnography: How Tenured Academic Women Talk About Success, Martina H. Myers Feb 2010

Institutional Ethnography: How Tenured Academic Women Talk About Success, Martina H. Myers

Communication ETDs

This institutional ethnography on tenured academic women focused on how twenty women talked about success. The purpose of this study was to use the discourse of tenured academic women to illustrate social interactions that constitute and transform the ruling relations. Institutional ethnography, a feminist methodology, inherently explores where communicative text provides insight into the larger structures of the ruling relations that govern, educate, train and inform. The information provided by tenured academic women, through in-depth one-on-one interviews and participant observation illuminated the fluid power dynamics of academic women in the gendered discursive organization of the academy. The women respondents described …

Multiple Roles: The Conflicted Realities Of Community College Mission Statements, Mark David Mrozinski Feb 2010

Multiple Roles: The Conflicted Realities Of Community College Mission Statements, Mark David Mrozinski

Dissertations

Questions of efficacy have always plagued the use of mission statement as a strategic planning tool. In most planning models, the mission statement serves to clarify goals and guide the formation of strategies. However, little empirical evidence exists validating that mission statements actually improve the performance of organizations, even though regional accrediting commissions in higher education include mission statement and affiliated processes as criterion for accreditation. For community colleges, the question is how can mission statements best be used to move the institution forward in a climate of change and challenges?

The purpose of this study is to explore the …

Refinement Of A Chemistry Attitude Measure For College Students, Xiaoying Xu Feb 2010

Refinement Of A Chemistry Attitude Measure For College Students, Xiaoying Xu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This work presents the evaluation and refinement of a chemistry attitude measure, Attitude toward the Subject of Chemistry Inventory (ASCI), for college students. The original 20-item and revised eight-item versions of ASCI (V1, V2, V3 and V3.1) were administered to different samples. The evaluation for ASCI had two main foci on the psychometric properties: reliability and validity. Both psychological theory and factor analysis techniques were applied to guide instrument refinement. Evidence for good reliability and validity was established for ASCI V2 score interpretation. The two-factor correlated structure was supported by confirmatory factor analysis. The two subscales, intellectual accessibility and emotional …

Dialogue On Campus: An Overview Of Promising Practices, Ande Diaz, Stephan Hiroshi Gilchrist

Office of Intercultural Center Staff Publications

Higher education institutions are recognizing the value of dialogue in engaging diverse perspectives and experiences while providing the necessary skills and knowledge for students to become effective citizens. Colleges and universities are incorporating the theory and practice of dialogue across different dimensions of the curriculum, co-curriculum, pedagogy, and administration and governance. Examples include nation-wide intergroup dialogue programs, community standards processes in residence halls, and institution-wide decision making on curricula. Seen as a whole, these and other examples provide a vision for a comprehensive approach to integrating dialogue on campuses.

Academic Excellence And Civic Engagement: Constructing A Third Space For Higher Education, Nancy Cantor Jan 2010

Academic Excellence And Civic Engagement: Constructing A Third Space For Higher Education, Nancy Cantor

Chancellor's Collection

Once again, the times demand that higher education play a transformative role. The full range of our disciplines can and must combine to make a difference. As Bruce Katz of the Brookings Institution has observed, the Great Recession “has unveiled an economy dangerously out of whack, frenzied with consumption, wasteful in its use of energy, more adept at increasing inequity than sharing prosperity.” In such a world, as Martha Nussbaum wrote this month, the future of democracy itself will depend on our ability to educate “complete citizens who can think for themselves, criticize tradition, and understand the significance of another …

Undergraduate Preparation And Dissertation Methodologies Of Accounting Phds Over The Past 40 Years, Marvin L. Bouillon, Sue Ravenscroft Jan 2010

Undergraduate Preparation And Dissertation Methodologies Of Accounting Phds Over The Past 40 Years, Marvin L. Bouillon, Sue Ravenscroft

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business

There is a shortage of accounting faculty and this shortage is predicted to worsen in the future. The number of new PhDs in accounting has declined from approximately 200 per year in the late 1980' s and early 1990' s to just over I 00 per year in recent years. Currently, we expect approximately 400 to 500 new accounting faculty positions to open up annually over the next to five to ten years. We believe that there has been a narrowing of the number of PhD candidates coming from fields other than accounting and other business related fields. If this …

The Effect Of Service- Learning On Interdisciplinary Learning And Curriculum Reinforcement, And Its Application To Public School Environments, Madeline Kovarik Jan 2010

The Effect Of Service- Learning On Interdisciplinary Learning And Curriculum Reinforcement, And Its Application To Public School Environments, Madeline Kovarik

Faculty Publications

This qualitative research project focused on the impact of service-learning experiences on an interdisciplinary college freshman course. The research included the impact on academic learning, the application of concepts into a public school educational environment, and the perceptions regarding the contribution to the school being served. Participants were college freshmen students who received pre and post surveys and participated in both verbal and written reflections. Analysis of the survey responses and reflection data indicated the service-learning experiences enhanced student learning. Analysis of data also indicated a disconnect between recognized community needs and college student involvement toward fulfilling the needs.

Looking Beyond The Undergraduate Classroom: Factors Influencing Service Learning's Effectiveness At Improving Graduate Students' Professional Skills, Yi Lu, Kristina T. Lambright Jan 2010

Looking Beyond The Undergraduate Classroom: Factors Influencing Service Learning's Effectiveness At Improving Graduate Students' Professional Skills, Yi Lu, Kristina T. Lambright

Public Administration Faculty Scholarship

This study provides a greater understanding of which factors influence the effectiveness of service learning projects at improving graduate students’ professional skills. Data for this study was gathered from students in eight Master of Public Administration (MPA) courses taught during two semesters at a large state university. Younger students were more likely than older students to believe that their service learning project was helpful in improving their professional skills. We also find that students who spent more time working on a service learning project outside of class reported their projects were more helpful in improving their professional skills. In addition, …

Students Speak, Abel King Fink Jan 2010

Students Speak, Abel King Fink

Butler Bookcase

This project represents my desire to spell out the story of my professional undertaking to reform education. I want to share my efforts to enhance human development in a democratic setting. I was motivated by the fact that the "education" I received as a young person was lacking in one essential ingredient: my own personal involvement. I was immersed in a process that left me, the protagonist, out of the picture. I questioned why I wasn't consulted or indeed enabled to be the central participant in developing a curriculum that was theoretically designed for my benefit. School events often …
