Learning Styles And Entrance Requirements For Online Master's Programs, Dr. Stanley L. Lightner, Dr. Anthony Mark Doggett, Dr. Vesta R. Whisler Jan 2010

Learning Styles And Entrance Requirements For Online Master's Programs, Dr. Stanley L. Lightner, Dr. Anthony Mark Doggett, Dr. Vesta R. Whisler

Architectural and Manufacturing Sciences Faculty Publications

As more online graduate programs are created and traditional programs shift to an online format, the need to identify and understand skill sets necessary for students’ success becomes more apparent. Typically, graduate programs rely on entrance requirements such as the GRE, undergraduate GPA, and a writing sample to evaluate an applicant’s potential success. Is it reasonable to expect that other entrance requirements might be needed for student success in online graduate degree programs?
Research comparing learning and personality styles of online learners exists; however, application of this information as part of the admissions process for online graduate programs is sporadic. …

Embracing Resistance At The Margins: First-Generation Latino Students' Testimonios On Dual/Concurrent Enrollment High School Programs, Michelle Renee Turner Jan 2010

Embracing Resistance At The Margins: First-Generation Latino Students' Testimonios On Dual/Concurrent Enrollment High School Programs, Michelle Renee Turner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite moderate gains in equal educational opportunities over the past 60 years, low-income students of color continue to lag behind their middle-class, White peers. This is particularly true for first-generation Latina/o students who: (a) have the highest K-12 drop-out rate than any other ethnic group in U.S. schools; (b) are underrepresented in high quality, rigorous secondary curricular tracks; and (c) continue to be overrepresented in two-year institutions and postsecondary vocational schools. Using a conceptual framework comprised of critical race theory (CRT), social theory, and community cultural wealth theory it was clear that the U.S. education system is still plagued by …

College Search Factors That Impact College Matriculation For African American Students: Implications For Policy And Praxis, Brandi Nicole Van Horn Jan 2010

College Search Factors That Impact College Matriculation For African American Students: Implications For Policy And Praxis, Brandi Nicole Van Horn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

College access is a top educational priority in the United States as millions of federal and state dollars are funneled into programs to ensure college access for all students, minorities and low-income students in particular (U.S. Department of Education, 2009a; U.S. Department of Education, 2009b). Over 80% of high school students and their parents aspire to attain postsecondary education (Dounay, 2006; Institute for Higher Education Policy, 2007). Yet, minorities' and low-income students' ability to penetrate postsecondary doors remains relatively depressed in comparison to their non-minority high-income student peers (Freeman, 2005; Perna, 2007). Most of the research related to college access …

Exploring The Use Of Social Bookmarking Technology In Education: An Analysis Of Students’ Experiences Using A Course-Specific Delicious.Com Account, Tricia M. Farwell, Richard D. Waters

Public and Nonprofit Administration

With more than 4.6 million people, mostly undergraduates, enrolling in at least one online course in fall of 2008, students are showing that they are comfortable with the concept of technology in education. Many students in online classes, however still have to deal with the high cost of textbooks and supplemental materials. Online technologies, however, can provide other alternatives to costly coursepacks and textbooks. Faculty and students may be able to replace or supplement coursepacks and textbooks with social bookmarking sites. This study shows how social bookmarking, specifically Delicious.com, can be used in a course to provide an inexpensive answer …

Annual Transitions Between Labour Market States For Young Australians, Hielke Buddelmeyer, Gary N. Marks Jan 2010

Annual Transitions Between Labour Market States For Young Australians, Hielke Buddelmeyer, Gary N. Marks

Vocational, adult and professional education research

This study uses an annual timeframe to evaluate the influence of labour market status in one period on status in the subsequent period. Understanding the role of past labour market experiences is important when it is the objective of policy-makers to increase the proportion of time spent by young Australians in desirable labour market states, such as full-time work, and reduce the time they spend in marginalised activities, such as unemployment. These concerns are heightened during lean economic times, but they never really go away. A natural question that may arise, especially in a weak labour market for youth, is …

Corporatization Of Higher Education: The Move For Greater Standardized Assessment Programs, Robert P. Engvall Jan 2010

Corporatization Of Higher Education: The Move For Greater Standardized Assessment Programs, Robert P. Engvall

Justice Studies Faculty Publications

This book addresses the on-going push for greater assessment in higher education, within the larger societal context in which a push for accountability and transparency has been rather selectively imposed. Addressing this context is done by means of addressing the specific higher education assessment literature, as well as such topics as unionization in higher education and the increase in “merit pay” schemes that diminish the collective power of union members and radically change the concept of academic freedom on college campuses. It addresses “dead weight” faculty that burden our institutions and drain our resources away from where they could be …

The Future Of Natural Selection Knowledge Measurement: A Reply To Anderson Et Al. (2010), Ross Nehm, Irvin Sam Schonfeld

Publications and Research

The development of rich, reliable, and robust measures of the composition, structure, and stability of student thinking about core scientific ideas (such as natural selection) remains a complex challenge facing science educators. In their recent article (Nehm & Schonfeld 2008), the authors explored the strengths, weaknesses, and insights provided by a detailed exploration of three commonly used measures of student thinking about natural selection in a large sample of underrepresented minority students. One of their core findings was that all of the tools they studied--including the CINS--have strengths and weaknesses that must be carefully taken into consideration by those …

It has also been a year in which we left behind the role of …

Working Together To Ease The Pressure To Publish In Higher Education, Barbara Burns Jan 2010

Working Together To Ease The Pressure To Publish In Higher Education, Barbara Burns

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Academics are under a great deal of pressure to publish. Decisions on crucial issues of hiring, tenure and promotion are largely determined by publication rates (Boice & Jones, 1984) and faculty scholarly performance has traditionally been assessed by “straight counts” of publications (Braxton & Del Favero, 2002). These publication rates are used by institutions as an indicator of the institution’s performance and are important criteria in securing external funding from government and other sources (McGrail, Rickard & Jones, 2006). Failure to publish within the expected norms established by a college or university can result in a faculty member’s termination.

A Measure Of Students’ Connectedness In Tertiary Institutions In Anambra State Of Nigeria, Ada Omenyi, Ngozi Agu, Christi Odimegwu Jan 2010

A Measure Of Students’ Connectedness In Tertiary Institutions In Anambra State Of Nigeria, Ada Omenyi, Ngozi Agu, Christi Odimegwu

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The Nigerian higher education has been accused of performing below expectation when judged from both internal and global benchmarks of quality of output, peaceful co-existence on campus, fair conduct of examination, amongst others. The nature of higher education is such that its students are seen by members of campus community as adults who have attained the age of taking full responsibility of their behaviours and students on their part see themselves as those set free from the encumbrances of family control and influences. Indeed the campus environment is one perceived as “everyman to himself”. Students’ relationship with teachers, fellow students, …

Higher Education Consortium Leads To College Students Taking A Fresh Look At Continuing Challenges For Their Region, Joseph Fink Iii Jan 2010

Higher Education Consortium Leads To College Students Taking A Fresh Look At Continuing Challenges For Their Region, Joseph Fink Iii

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Institutions of higher education have long had teaching, research and service as their primary missions. Emphasis among those three areas of activity can vary substantially from one institution to another. For example, a land grant university may have a greater emphasis on service or outreach to the communities it serves than would, say, a traditional liberal arts college. Society appears to have an increased expectation that the research conducted at research universities will lead to economic development opportunities (Yusuf & Fink, 2007). Fortunately, each type of institution has much to offer society at large and the communities or regions where …

Enhancement Of Critical Thinking In Curriculum Design And Delivery: A Randomized Controlled Trial For Educators, Raisa Gul, Shanaz Cassum, Azra Ahmad, Shehla Khan, Tanveer Saeed, Yasmin Parpio

School of Nursing & Midwifery

Critical thinking is an important outcome criterion of higher education in any discipline including nursing. If nursing programs envisaged preparing graduates who are equipped with critical thinking, then the educators who plan and deliver the programs must exhibit higher level thinking in their teaching practices. This paper presents finding of the 1st phase of a National level research study that aims to assess, develop and enhance educators’ critical thinking capacity.

The Experience Of Liberal Education, Edward L. Ayers Jan 2010

The Experience Of Liberal Education, Edward L. Ayers

History Faculty Publications

Every college and university has built new capacity to deliver new experiences for students through study abroad, community service, career development, health and fitness, cultural understanding, or spiritual growth. They come to college to broaden their experience, and colleges and universities are the only places where people of all backgrounds, religions, ethnicities, classes, and politics come together to explore who they are and who they might become. Going to college is a defining time in their lives, and there is much more we can do to make it a liberating and transformative experience.

Personal Reflection: Sotl And Don't Perish!, Gerald Goh

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This reflection describes my early encounters with SoTL as I went through a critical period questioning my role and responsibilities as an academic and my journey with a cohort of students who made me realise that there is indeed a dire need for SoTL to bridge the nexus between a university academic’s teaching responsibilities as well as the global ‘publish or perish’ pressure most academics experience today

Integrating Contemplative Practice Into The Undergraduate Pursuit Of Finding And Following An Intuitive Call, Jan M. Wall Jan 2010

Integrating Contemplative Practice Into The Undergraduate Pursuit Of Finding And Following An Intuitive Call, Jan M. Wall

Educational Studies Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the integration of contemplative practice into higher education. The intention of such integration would be to facilitate a students ability to hear and follow an intuitive call. Intuition was defined as an immediate, unmediated or tacit way of knowing; calls or callings as inner directives towards meaningful life pursuits. Intuition and calls were seen as overlapping and interchangeable terms. The literature review for this study explored relevant trends in higher education. One trend involves academic shifts towards professional readiness, or marketable skills, away from personal quests (such as following a call). Paradoxically, …
