The Development Of Strategies For Success In College Among First-Generation College Students: An Examination Of A Focused Intervention, Lindsey Weber Apr 2011

The Development Of Strategies For Success In College Among First-Generation College Students: An Examination Of A Focused Intervention, Lindsey Weber

Honors Projects in History and Social Sciences

As a college education is becoming more crucial for career placement in today’s economy, more individuals with diverse backgrounds are seeking a higher education. An increase in first-generation college students is one significant change in college demographics. These students who are the first in their families to attend an institution of higher education face academic, social, and mental/emotional challenges that students whose parents or elder siblings did attend college may not face. The current study had three objectives. The first was to create an assessment to measure college readiness. Secondly, an intervention program was created to address potential barriers to …

Professionalization Of College Sports: The Case Of College Basketball, Sean Kaukas

Honors Projects in Finance

This study examines how major college basketball programs have become professionalized, and follow a professional model in terms of their revenues, expenses, and profits. “Professionalized” is defined as having a fundamental focus on profits and revenues. Revenue and expense data for the 2006-2007 season was selected from the six major conferences: Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, ACC, PAC 10, and SEC. Data was collected from the Office of Postsecondary Education, where revenues and expenses are reported for each school. These data were examined and used to gauge whether these programs or conferences are following a professional model. In addition, …

"Getting Educated": Working Class And First-Generation Students And The Extra-Curriculum, Taylor Laemmli Apr 2011

"Getting Educated": Working Class And First-Generation Students And The Extra-Curriculum, Taylor Laemmli

Sociology Honors Projects

Previous research shows that participation in the extra-curriculum supports college students' integration, but participation varies based on students' background: working class students and first-generation college students tend to participate less. I contribute to this literature by analyzing interview data. I find students differ in how they participate in activities and integrate into college based on their likelihood of attending an elite institution. Working-class and first-generation students participate in activities as an extension of academics, while other students participate for social reasons, resulting in different experiences of campus life. This difference can restrict students' gains in social and cultural capital, potentially …

A Framework For Analyzing Demand And Supply Of Faculty And The Quality Of Higher Education:, Chiranjib Sen Apr 2011

A Framework For Analyzing Demand And Supply Of Faculty And The Quality Of Higher Education:, Chiranjib Sen

Working Papers

Higher education has a crucial role in India's ability to succeed in the modern global economic system. The number of institutions serving the sector and student enrolments in India have expanded very rapidly in recent decades.2 Enhanced educational attainments have contributed significantly to the high economic growth rates in the services sector that have buoyed India's recent economic performance. Yet higher education institutions and their performance are plagued by many problems, and this has been a major source of policy concern.3 This paper will focus on two of these major issues-namely the phenomenon of "faculty shortage" and the "quality" of …

Faculty Senate Newsletter, April 2011, Louisiana State University And Agricultural & Mechanical College

LSU Faculty Senate Publications

Message from President: In my last “welcome” column, I addressed the question of Louisiana universities after the economic crisis, suggesting a variety of adjustments that would increase morale and promote economic justice in institutions that reward fashion and momentary stellar performances more often than they recognize adventurous dissent or long-term projects. Although not inexhaustible, the topic of higher education after our present calamities merits a bit more consideration, especially with regard to structural changes that might advance our institution even in the midst of economic distress. Having commenced its career as the cultural equivalent of a fortification, LSU has always …

The Digital Mind And The Future Of Liberal Arts Education, Harlan Stelmach, Martin Anderson Apr 2011

The Digital Mind And The Future Of Liberal Arts Education, Harlan Stelmach, Martin Anderson

Collected Faculty Scholarship

Today higher liberal arts education is challenged by the continuing emphasis on vocational, business, and science majors among administrators and the decline in the demand for humanities majors among students anxious about their economic future. More fundamental and far-reaching, however, are the historic changes in the physical form in which ideas are preserved and communicated, the time people allocate to contemplating those ideas, and the ways people process them as society shifts from the book age into the digital age.1 Those who grew up in the book age can visualize the problem by thinking of this question: What is …

Persistence In Learning: Expectations And Experiences Of African American Students In Predominately White Universities, Brenda W. Wright, Donald W. Good, Jim Lampley

ETSU Faculty Works

This study addressed the academic, cultural, and social expectations and experiences of 20 African American juniors and seniors at two predominantly White universities in the Southern Appalachian region of the United States. The participants’ described experiences revealed how institutional practices promoted or obstructed their persistence to graduation. Findings indicated a dissonance between the students’ academic, cultural, and social expectations and experiences primarily caused by unanticipated racist experiences in the classrooms, on the campuses, and in the campus communities-at-large. Positive relationships with administrators, faculty members, and staff emerged as the most significant contributors to the students’ capability to safely and successfully …

Latino Educators Of Tomorrow: Culture-Specific Mentoring For The College Transition, Anna Trevino Mar 2011

Latino Educators Of Tomorrow: Culture-Specific Mentoring For The College Transition, Anna Trevino

Theses and Dissertations

The population of Latino students is growing faster than any other ethnic group in U.S. public schools today; however, the number of Latino teachers throughout the nation has remained low. The Latino Educators of Tomorrow is a new and ambitious Latino educational career program designed to increase the number of Latino students entering teaching as a profession. This research addressed the following questions: 1) What do participants identify as influential in their trajectory towards becoming an educator, and why?; 2) How do LET instructors, acting in the role of mentors, influence participants' desires and plans to become educators, and why?; …

Student Perspectives On How Higher Education In Ireland Can Help Meet The Needs Of The Irish Economy, Ann Conway, Noelle O'Connor Mar 2011

Student Perspectives On How Higher Education In Ireland Can Help Meet The Needs Of The Irish Economy, Ann Conway, Noelle O'Connor

Conference papers

This paper will be in three parts; the first section will examine the current tertiary education situation in Ireland amid the global economic crisis and will review what higher education’s contribution be to help alleviate the crisis. Building stronger links with the academy and the economy to help raise skills, efficiency and productivity is becoming more important in ensuring global competitiveness and retaining equality and accessibility in the academy (see Gaffikin and Morrissey, 2003: 98 [14]). The second section will look at the merge of entrepreneurship and education. As the lifelong learning society is conceptualised largely in terms of maintaining …

Strategic Directions For Gettysburg College Update & Upcoming Major Facilities Projects, March 2011, President's Office

Reports from the President’s Office

The four central themes of Strategic Directions-Engagement, Distinction, Access and Connection-remain the best guideposts to lead us towards our goals and aspirations for Gettysburg College. However, the current context does require us to sharpen our focus, prioritize further, and better capitalize on opportunities and synergies. [excerpt]

Advising Task Force Report, Angie Bomier, Kellian Clink, Sarah Glaser, Sara Granberg-Rademacker, Sarah Koenen, Dan Kromer, Jane Mcconnell

Library Services Publications

There is compelling evidence that advising is considered very important by students, that academic advising is an important factor in retention, and that many students at Minnesota State University, Mankato, feel that their advising experience is less than ideal. Many faculty feel frustrated with their lack of time, their lack of training, and the lack of a centralized advising resource that quickly and reliably provides information about policies and procedures necessary for good advising. The following report describes the issues uncovered by Noel-Levitz and NSSE, a pilot study matching survey done in 2006, an in-depth conversation with graduation evaluators here, …
