Multicultural Student Services Center
The eMCC is a bi-annual electronic publication from the University of Rhode Island’s Multicultural Center. It features original creative works from undergraduate/graduate students, staff/faculty members, and guest contributors. eMCC is a growing branch off of an idea that a wealth of diversity exists in our daily lives. Often, we continue on our ways without noticing the smallest details or the most simple gestures. eMCC strives to give light to the beauty we sometimes forget to see. In our first ground-breaking issue, we celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in a theme that questions, “How has community service …
Strategic Directions For Gettysburg College Update, February 2011, President's Office
Strategic Directions For Gettysburg College Update, February 2011, President's Office
Reports from the President’s Office
Much has changed since the Strategic Directions for Gettysburg were articulated in 2007. We have had transition in the leadership of the College in key positions including the president, the provost, and the vice president for development, alumni and parent relations. The economy has shifted seismically and in ways we certainly would not have predicted in 2007. Demographic projections related to the diversity of high school students and their geographic distributions have become a reality. The emergence of online learning opportunities and for-profit education, together with a high unemployment rate and significant increases in student financial need, have created a …
Adjustment Problems Among International Students In Malaysian Private Higher Education Institutions, S. Malakolunthu, P.S. Selan
Adjustment Problems Among International Students In Malaysian Private Higher Education Institutions, S. Malakolunthu, P.S. Selan
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
The Malaysian government aims to internationalize tertiary education in the country. In order to attract more international students, it is important to understand and develop measures to overcome the various kinds of adjustment problems they face. A quantitative survey using the 'International Student Problem Inventory' was conducted on randomly selected international students from five major private higher education institutions in Malaysia. Data analysis revealed that the adjustment problems related to academic, religious, personal, and social adjustment problems were rated high, with financial, and language adjustment problems showing the least impact. Based on the findings, some recommendations are provided to help …

Message from the President: Spring is the season in which metamorphoses routinely occur. It might also be a good time to consider the control that a dark old demon called habit can exert in even the bright days of renewal. Those who seldom sally through the ramparts of the many Boyd Halls and those who see the necessity of quick and often excruciating decisions by the administration may not see the grip that habit exerts not on any one campus executive but on the culture of administration as a whole. The most obvious and often the most prestigious form of …

Developing Students' Capacity For Innovation, Creativity And Critical Thinking Through Contemporary Forms Of Assessment, Sean P. Kearney, Tim Perkins
Developing Students' Capacity For Innovation, Creativity And Critical Thinking Through Contemporary Forms Of Assessment, Sean P. Kearney, Tim Perkins
Education Conference Papers
In continuing with the forms and methods of assessment that for decades have pervaded higher education, are we devaluing the education we provide and disengaging students in the process?
Why do we assess? What is our purpose and for whose benefit do we assess? Are these benefits achieved through current practices? These are the questions that need to be addressed.
The demands on educators to provide valuable, student-centred assessment and feedback have never been greater. Feedback is one of the most powerful influences on learning and achievement (Hattie, 2007), and how we construct and evaluate these tasks to provide feedback …

Improving Engagement: The Use Of ‘Authentic Self And Peer Assessment For Learning’ To Enhance The Student Learning Experience, Sean P. Kearney, Tim Perkins
Education Conference Papers
The University system in the United States has been criticized for depersonalizing education (Tae 2009). The depersonalization of learning shows a lack of engagement on the part of the educator and the student and consequently the university. We ask the question: Can incorporating self and peer assessment into tertiary studies help to reengage students in their education?
Innovative assessment practices have the capacity to significantly change the perceptions of students with regard to their tertiary studies. Assessment drives learning (Boud, 1990); however, the wrong type of assessment drives the wrong type of learning. Traditional tests, meaningless essays, research projects that …
