The Virtual Professor: A New Model In Higher Education, Randall Valentine, Robert Bennett Apr 2013

The Virtual Professor: A New Model In Higher Education, Randall Valentine, Robert Bennett

Administrative Issues Journal

Traditional colleges and universities face a unique challenge of increasing the scope of educational operations to accommodate the growing demand for online education. While online enrollments in higher education have grown at a rapid pace, faculty resources have remained stagnant at many institutions due to budget constraints and a sluggish economy. Many administrators in higher education struggle to find a balance between meeting course demands and maintaining quality of instruction while adhering to financial constraints. This paper proposes a model to manage costs by supplementing traditional faculty with virtual faculty who would operate primarily in an online environment and work …

Actualizing Organizational Core Values: Putting Theory Into Practice, George J. Byrtek, Mark Dickerson Apr 2013

Actualizing Organizational Core Values: Putting Theory Into Practice, George J. Byrtek, Mark Dickerson

Faculty Publications - George Fox Digital

The literature on organizational culture and leading by shared values suggests a prescriptive model for use by leaders in actualizing stated organizational core values. Utilizing a qualitative case study approach, this study sought to examine the efficacy of this theoretical model in representing actual efforts by practitioners to embed diversity as a new organizational core value. Leadership actions to embed and actualize diversity as an institutional core value at two private universities were examined and compared. Findings suggest the theoretical model inadequately addresses the critical role of contextual assessment and under represents the dynamic cyclical nature of value embedding and …

The Perceived Value Of Counselor Preparation For Student Affairs Professionals, Jake J. Protivnak, Matthew J. Paylo, J. Carol Mercer

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

Student affairs programs share a common goal of developing master’s level professionals for employment in higher education. Approximately one-third of student affairs training programs are counseling-based and half of those programs are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). However, there is a lack of literature regarding the preparation of student affairs professionals trained in counseling programs and the importance of counselor training to the student affairs profession. Based upon a review of the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education Professional Standards, CACREP standards, and other related research, this article will …

Perceptions Of Creativity Among Faculty In Higher Education, Ellie Melissa Potter Apr 2013

Perceptions Of Creativity Among Faculty In Higher Education, Ellie Melissa Potter

Masters Theses

Higher education instructors do not sufficiently incorporate creativity in the teaching and learning environments within which they operate. While there is a great deal of research available regarding creativity and primary or secondary education, there is little research available regarding creativity and higher education. This study contributes to that gap of knowledge by surveying faculty members in one institution of higher education in order to understand their perspectives regarding creativity, both as it relates to being a creative individual and to teaching others to be creative themselves. There were 358 faculty members who participated in the online survey designed specifically …

A Preliminary Study On Curation Concerns In Higher Education Anthropology Programs With A Focus On Archaeological Collections, Sarah Cain Apr 2013

A Preliminary Study On Curation Concerns In Higher Education Anthropology Programs With A Focus On Archaeological Collections, Sarah Cain

Research Papers

Curation is the long-term care and management of collections, which is essential to preserve objects, artifacts, and records for future generations. Yet, in the past, there had often been little concern given to the curation of archaeological collections, especially in higher education archaeology programs in the United States. This attitude began to change in the 1990s, when the federal government passed two critical laws, the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation act (known as NAGPRA) and the Curation of Federally-Owned and Administered Archeological Collections (36 CFR 79). Despite some positive changes over the past two decades, research suggests that archaeological …

Is The Sat The Root Of All Evil? Reviewing The Evidence On Admission Policies And Diversity In Higher Education, Loris Fagioli Mar 2013

Is The Sat The Root Of All Evil? Reviewing The Evidence On Admission Policies And Diversity In Higher Education, Loris Fagioli

LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University

It is imperative to achieve diversity in Higher Education. With affirmative action policies under fire, it is becoming difficult to enroll a diverse student body. Many critics see standardized tests, and the SAT in particular, as contributing to the problem. This paper reviews research on such criticism, about suggested alternative approaches, and regarding recommendations on how to improve the current situation. In general, this review finds little evidence against a judicious use of the SAT. Also, alternative approaches such as percent plans or abolishing the SAT have had little success in increasing diversity. However, most specialists agree that a comprehensive …

International Collaboration Of Distance Learning Universities For Online Learning In Indonesia, Diki Diki

LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University

Indonesian higher education must improve its enrollment as well as its quality. One possibility for improving the quality of distance learning universities is collaboration with foreign universities.
