Work/Life Boundary Management In An Integrative Environment: A Study Of Residence Life Professionals Who Live At Their Place Of Work, Pressley Robinson Rankin Iv Phd May 2013

Work/Life Boundary Management In An Integrative Environment: A Study Of Residence Life Professionals Who Live At Their Place Of Work, Pressley Robinson Rankin Iv Phd

Dissertations

How individuals manage work/life boundaries when they live at the place they work, as opposed to working from home, is a gap in both work/life literature and in higher education literature. An obvious example from higher education is the resident life professional that lives in the residential facility that she or he oversees. Living in a residential facility creates challenges to boundary creation. The job requirements; pressures from students and staff; supervisor expectations, both spoken and unspoken; and the physical location of their home within the building creates a highly boundary integrative environment making the establishment of boundaries difficult. The …

Private Student Loan Asset Backed Securities: A Default Curve Analysis, Nicholas Gentile Apr 2013

Private Student Loan Asset Backed Securities: A Default Curve Analysis, Nicholas Gentile

Honors Projects in Finance

Business and mainstream media devote significant attention to the student lending industry and its possible threat to the economy. While the private loan component of student lending may not be largest part of this one trillion dollar industry, it is likely to be the space where evidence supporting the media’s concerns are found. This paper examines the variation in cumulative default rates for private student loan asset backed securities issued between 2001 and 2007, revealing the dynamics of these opaque financial instruments. The study analyzes internal pool data and external economic data, uncovering the primary factors that shape the respective …

An Assessment Of Diversity Competence Among College Seniors: An Exploratory Study, Lung-Chiuan Chiang Apr 2013

An Assessment Of Diversity Competence Among College Seniors: An Exploratory Study, Lung-Chiuan Chiang

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In our increasingly diverse global workforce, both employers and institutions of higher learning want to know if colleges and universities equip their students with adequate cultural competence skills. Reliable instruments to measure cultural competence levels for a general student body are not widely available, however. In this report, a self-developed 33-item instrument was designed to assess college seniors’ cultural competence levels, including sub-scales for cultural awareness and cultural knowledge. An expert panel was selected to establish content validity. A pilot study was conducted to improve the design of survey format. The Cronbach’s alpha was .770 according to the reliability test. …

Impact Of Hathaway Scholarship On Wyoming Higher Education, Jason Despain, Dr. Eric Eide Apr 2013

Impact Of Hathaway Scholarship On Wyoming Higher Education, Jason Despain, Dr. Eric Eide

Journal of Undergraduate Research

A commonly repeated axiom states, “Life is what happens when you make other plans.” In other words, most endeavors in life rarely go as planned or according to proposed timelines, although the end result is most often positive and desirable. Such has been the case with this research assignment. It continues to go forward, and I continue to learn about the overall researching process, but it has not yet gone according to plan. This final report details the last six months of the project, its current state, and the expected future.

A Phenomenological Study Of Mid-Career Female Student Affairs Administrators' Experiences Navigating The Career Labyrinth Including Obstacles In Catholic Higher Education, Michele Starzyk

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

While the role of women in the Catholic Church has been a topic of much discussion, there has also been a call for the Church to partner with the laity. However, women who choose to work in Catholic co-educational, male sponsored higher education institutions may find a gendered organizational culture to embrace. Little research has been done in regards to the experience women have navigating the career labyrinth at mid-career while employed at Catholic institutions.

This study attempted to answer the grand tour question of what meaning do mid-career female student affairs professionals make of navigating the career labyrinth, including …

To Stand On Their Own Legs: Independence And Other Motivations For Women’S Pursuit Of Post- Graduate Studies, And Their Parents’ Influence On Them, In Vishakhapatnam India, Colleen Mcdermott, Dr. Charles Nuckolls

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In recent years, there have been countless studies on the benefits of educating women. Though there is a general consensus on the positive results of women’s education, their access to education is still rather limited in many areas of the world. One such area is India, where traditional views of gender are still very widespread and female education levels are extremely low. Despites these rates, a minority of women in India are pursuing higher education. I interviewed female students living at a hostel (college dormitory) and attending the post-graduate institution Andhra University inquiring about their motivations for continuing school, their …

Getting In Bed With Our Customers: How Did We Embed Our Services To Push The Library Mission At Vaal University Of Technology, Ntombizodwa G. Thomas

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Emerging trends in technology have changed the academic libraries’ landscape and services. These changes will forever impact and influence how libraries conduct their businesses to satisfy the most important people in their lives; that is; the customers we serve, especially in academic libraries.

In the 21st century waiting for customers to come to the libraries to is no longer working and is also no longer relevant. Getting out of our comfort zones, getting close to our clients, invading their space when they least expect and getting in bed with those customers to satisfy their information needs is now a …

Blended Learning In Information Literacy Education. How To Make The Resources Stretch?, Marja Talikka, Iris Tahvanainen, Hanna Varri

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Many small university libraries struggle with lack of resources for teaching information literacy (IL) skills to the students. There is not enough time or personnel to reach all the students in need of IL education. On the other hand, the faculties expect students to use high quality academic information sources while writing their papers. However, the teachers have neither time nor knowledge to instruct their students in information retrieval.

The paper describes one solution model to the problem. In the Lappeenranta University of Technology the library personnel have created an IL education package which requires few resources but works well …

An Exploratory Framework For A Study On Designing A Research Focused Advanced Information Literacy Program For Engineering Postgraduates, Karien Du Bruyn Apr 2013

An Exploratory Framework For A Study On Designing A Research Focused Advanced Information Literacy Program For Engineering Postgraduates, Karien Du Bruyn

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Efforts to improve information literacy levels in academic institutions are often focused on undergraduate students, and mostly address the improvement of information retrieval skills. This practice is also evident in information literacy programs offered for postgraduate researchers, if offered at all. Although there have been radical transformations in scholarly communication and practice in recent years, there is still an assumption among many that researchers on postgraduate level are sufficiently information literate to deal with the new challenges. A gradual awareness of the unique needs of postgraduate researchers in a dynamic and demanding academic environment is, however, developing. Literature in this …

Finishing On-Time: A Qualitative Examination Of Contributors To Timely Undergraduate Degree Completion, Diane Vermaaten

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the most significant factors that contributed to on-time undergraduate degree completion. On-time degree completion requires that a student complete all the requirements of their degree within 4.5 years or less. A grounded theory methodology was used to conduct the study. Narrative data was collected through semi-structured interviews. Thirty former students who completed their undergraduate degree at Virginia Commonwealth University were recruited for this study. To be eligible for the study, participants had to have completed their undergraduate degree in 4.5 years or less and graduated between 2004 and 2011. The analysis of …
