Poor Queer Studies: Class, Race, And The Field, Matt Brim Nov 2018

Poor Queer Studies: Class, Race, And The Field, Matt Brim

Publications and Research

This study asks, What are the material conditions under which queer studies is done in the academy? It finds a longstanding association of queer studies with the well-resourced, selective colleges and flagship campuses that are the drivers of class and race stratification in higher education in the U.S. That is, the field of queer studies, as a recognizable academic formation, has been structured by the material and intellectual resources of precisely those institutions that most steadfastly refuse to adequately serve poor and minority students, including poor and minority queer students. In response, “poor queer studies” calls for a critical reorientation …

Is Students’ Energy Literacy Related To Their University’S Position In A Sustainability Ranking?, D. R.E. Cotton, J. Winter, W. Miller, L. Dalla Valle Nov 2018

Is Students’ Energy Literacy Related To Their University’S Position In A Sustainability Ranking?, D. R.E. Cotton, J. Winter, W. Miller, L. Dalla Valle

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

University rankings are increasingly important internationally, and in the UK include a sustainability ‘Green League’. However, there is little evidence about experiences of studying in ‘sustainable universities’. We report an empirical study at five universities in varied positions in the Green League, exploring students’ energy literacy, environmental attitudes and perceptions of their institution’s energy-saving efforts. Although the link to energy literacy is not clear, findings suggest that there are significant differences between students’ environmental attitudes at universities placed at different points in the league. In addition, students at higher ranked universities are more positive about their university’s energy-saving efforts, suggesting …

Between Paralysis And Empowerment: Action In Mathematics For Social Justice Work, Lidia Gonzalez Nov 2018

Between Paralysis And Empowerment: Action In Mathematics For Social Justice Work, Lidia Gonzalez

Publications and Research

In this article, I focus on my experiences teaching a seminar in critical pedagogy and the math for social justice (MfSJ) work that grew from of my students’ reflections as to how they might promote change towards justice. The course was designed to acquaint students with the research literature in critical pedagogy as we explored the social, political, cultural, and economic realities around our system of public education. Yet there came a point where students questioned the value of such exploration as they genuinely considered what to do next. I, too, struggled both to support the students I was working …

Examining The Relationship Between A Co-Curricular Service-Learning Experience And Moral Competence, Jamie Burns Burriss Oct 2018

Examining The Relationship Between A Co-Curricular Service-Learning Experience And Moral Competence, Jamie Burns Burriss

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Short-term service-learning experiences such as alternative breaks are increasing in popularity due to the focus on service in higher education and the institution’s responsibility to ensure students are graduating with the skills needed to succeed in an increasingly competitive, global economy and contribute to a democratic society as citizens who address societal needs. To meet this demand, colleges and universities continue to explore ways to increase civic engagement in the form of curricular and co-curricular programs. Additionally, faculty and administrators in higher education are intensely seeking a revitalization of the public purposes of higher education, which include educating for moral …

The Socialization Of Students Serving On United States Public Post-Secondary Education Boards, Erin Renee Bendily Oct 2018

The Socialization Of Students Serving On United States Public Post-Secondary Education Boards, Erin Renee Bendily

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study aimed to explain how student members of United States public post-secondary education boards are socialized into their roles and how specific strategies influence their engagement and effectiveness. Researchers have studied student involvement and leadership, including why and how students become involved, individual and institutional benefits, challenges that students experience, and perceptions about students’ involvement in decision-making. Literature also addresses organizational socialization and that of post-secondary education board newcomers, including strategies that organizations use to support their engagement and effectiveness. Little research, however, has been done on the ways in which those boards attempt to support and facilitate students’ …

Utah Women's Postsecondary Education Roundtable, Susan R. Madsen Oct 2018

Utah Women's Postsecondary Education Roundtable, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Utah must harness the power of education for its residents, as the state’s future economic success and high quality of life rests squarely upon having an educated population. Increasing the number of Utah residents completing a postsecondary certificate or degree is a powerful strategy for maximizing the quality of life in Utah. An educated population increases both the social and economic capital of the state. Cultivating an educated populace requires creating a college-going culture and assuring that both women and men earn postsecondary certificates and degrees to the maximum extent possible.

(In)Visible Men On Campus: Campus Racial Climate And Subversive Black Masculinities At A Predominantly White Liberal Arts University, Quaylan Allen Oct 2018

(In)Visible Men On Campus: Campus Racial Climate And Subversive Black Masculinities At A Predominantly White Liberal Arts University, Quaylan Allen

Education Faculty Articles and Research

There is an emerging body of literature examining the academic success of Black men attending predominantly White colleges and universities, though less is known about Black college men’s experiences at liberal arts institutions. In this paper, I draw upon semi-structured and photovoice interview data from a study on Black male college students attending a predominantly White liberal arts institution in the USA. Specifically, I will present narrative and visual data of how Black college men perceive the campus racial climate and make sense of their (in)visibility at the university. Drawing upon poststructuralist theories of gender and critical race theory, I …

Black Middle Class Parental Investment In Their Children's Higher Education, Michael George Flanigan Oct 2018

Black Middle Class Parental Investment In Their Children's Higher Education, Michael George Flanigan

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The persistent negative racial disparity in the higher educational achievement of Black students in the United States has societal implications for employment, income trajectory, home ownership, and wealth accumulation. It is widely accepted that parental investment is crucial across all races in enhancing the academic performance of students and, ultimately, facilitating intergenerational socioeconomic progress. Although numerous studies have looked at the ways in which parents invest, a paucity of research has examined how Black middle-class parents engage in preparing their children for higher education. This narrative study explores how Black middle-class parents perceive the value of college, their understanding of …

Charlottesville, Troy Tribble Oct 2018

Charlottesville, Troy Tribble

Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs

Since taking office President Trump has been leading America into a downward spiral. Instead of uniting everyone, he has divided us as a country. It feels As if we’re back in the 50s with racial segregation and discrimination an example of this is the Charlottesville Rally where white supremacists went to protest the city’s plan to take down Confederate monuments. The event turned violent after protesters clashed with counter-protesters. After seeing this play out on CNN I was inspired to make an abstract representation of the event that took place during the rally as the counter-protester was attacked.

Holding Onto Dread And Hope: The Need For Critical Whiteness Studies In Education As Resistance In The Trump Era, Brittany A. Aronson, Kyle Ashlee Oct 2018

Holding Onto Dread And Hope: The Need For Critical Whiteness Studies In Education As Resistance In The Trump Era, Brittany A. Aronson, Kyle Ashlee

Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs

The purpose of this article is to critically examine how white higher education instructors work through the tensions of dread and hope while supporting and preparing educators during the Trump Administration. Dread is a result of the permanence of racism while hope seeps through a collective effort and commitment to dismantling white supremacy. Aronson is racialized as a white, ethnically Latina female teacher educator who educates predominantly white female pre-service teachers and Ashlee is a white male doctoral candidate who teaches master’s level student affairs courses to predominantly white students. Using critical autoethnographic narratives, they reflect on their experiences using …

The Personal Is Still Political: A Feminist Critical Policy Analysis Of The Rollback Of Title Ix, Leslie Duadua Cabingabang Oct 2018

The Personal Is Still Political: A Feminist Critical Policy Analysis Of The Rollback Of Title Ix, Leslie Duadua Cabingabang

Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs

The rollback of the previous guidance has left college campuses uncertain about the future of Title IX. I hope to disrupt the discourse by using feminist critical analysis of Title IX reform and provide a reframed course of discussion for higher education professionals. The fact that gender-based policies continue to be governed by lawmakers keeps the personal political. I begin with an overview of feminist critical policy analysis and explain why I chose to use it to analyze Title IX guidance. Next, with the intent to expose sexism and other forms of oppression, I use critical feminist thought to (a) …

Exploring The Career Satisfaction Of Counselor Educators, Regina R. Moro, Rebecca Scherer Oct 2018

Exploring The Career Satisfaction Of Counselor Educators, Regina R. Moro, Rebecca Scherer

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

In this article, the authors report counselor educators’ career satisfaction through a descriptive analysis. Seventy-five counselor educators from all across the United States completed an online demographic questionnaire and four self-report instruments related to career satisfaction in general, work environment, and mentorship experiences. The results indicate that counselor educators report satisfaction with most aspects of the job, but report dissatisfaction with pay/promotion and mentorship. This is important for consideration for current and future counselor educators, due to the amount of time and cost associated with obtaining a doctoral degree. The researchers discuss and suggest future research recommendations.

Access For Whom? Oer And Disability Services, Michelle Reed, Joshua Mitchell Oct 2018

Access For Whom? Oer And Disability Services, Michelle Reed, Joshua Mitchell

UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive

A common misconception is that open educational resources (OER) are accessible for all students, in part, perhaps, because of the belief that digital content (as is typically the case with OER) is accessible by nature. As the situation at the University of California (UC), Berkeley, clearly demonstrated, however, this is not the case. UC Berkeley removed free online content from its website rather than adapt it to be accessible to those with disabilities following a U.S. Department of Justice investigation indicating online learning materials (i.e., YouTube videos, MOOCs, and iTunes U courses) were "not accessible to individuals with hearing, vision …

Resilience, Resistance, And Reclamation: Changing The Narrative Of Higher Education, Cobretti D. Williams Oct 2018

Resilience, Resistance, And Reclamation: Changing The Narrative Of Higher Education, Cobretti D. Williams

Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs

At every turn and post on social media, we encounter images and reminders of the tumultuous sociopolitical climate of today. Scholars, educators, and activists are now being challenged to resist and reclaim our stories and identities in the face of extreme adversity. In order to honor the work of our community, we curated this special issue to challenge the status quo of higher education policies and practices used to divide us during the current Trump-era administration. Furthermore, this special issue speaks to the nuanced experiences that dismantle oppressive practices, illuminates the collective knowledge of marginalized voices, and hopefully, changes the …

Utilization Of Information Technology As Instructional Support In Higher Education – A Case Study, Linda C. Gordon, Erin Gratz, David Kung, Leeshawn Moore, Shelley G. Urbizagastegui Oct 2018

Utilization Of Information Technology As Instructional Support In Higher Education – A Case Study, Linda C. Gordon, Erin Gratz, David Kung, Leeshawn Moore, Shelley G. Urbizagastegui

Communications of the IIMA

Despite significant increases in the growth of online education, a review of research reveals few studies of faculty perceptions of the use of technology in classrooms in higher education. Research can explore and illuminate how to bridge the gap between faculty perceptions and institutional goals and objectives for online programs. The study at hand presents the views of full-time and adjunct faculty across the colleges, both on- and off-campus, and the online community, at the University of La Verne, a private Tier II doctoral degree-granting institution located in Southern California.

Gendered Identity And Investment In Language Learning: A Case Study Of Heritage Spanish Speakers, Farah Ali Oct 2018

Gendered Identity And Investment In Language Learning: A Case Study Of Heritage Spanish Speakers, Farah Ali

Friday Forum

Much of the existing research in second and heritage language acquisition (S/HLA) takes a traditional approach of focusing on the cognitive processes involved in S/HLA, as well as the resulting outcomes. A relatively recent approach that has emerged in S/HLA scholarship, however, relates the learner to the social world in terms of how sociocultural contexts may shape an individual’s language learning experiences and their personal investment in the process. This emergent approach also challenges traditional categorical conceptions of identity, positing that it is dynamic, fluid, constructed, and negotiated in social contexts. Following this approach, my objective is to demonstrate how …

Non-Traditional Students At Public Regional Universities: A Case Study, Lizabeth Zack Oct 2018

Non-Traditional Students At Public Regional Universities: A Case Study, Lizabeth Zack

Teacher-Scholar: The Journal of the State Comprehensive University

This paper investigates the topic of non-traditional students enrolled at four-year public regional universities and addresses questions about who they are, what makes them non-traditional and how they experience college life. The analysis is based on survey data collected from 187 undergraduates at one regional public college in the southeastern United States. The study found a higher portion of non-traditional students than expected and that the non-traditional students tended to break down into two types, a younger worker-student and an older adult student, rather than conforming to a single profile. While the findings highlight other similarities with the broader population …

Stories Of Success: African American Speech-Language Pathologists’ Academic Resilience, Sarah M. Ginsberg Oct 2018

Stories Of Success: African American Speech-Language Pathologists’ Academic Resilience, Sarah M. Ginsberg

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

Approximately 7.7% of the membership of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association identifies itself as being a minority in contrast with 23% of the United States population (ASHA, 2016; U.S. Census Bureau, 2014). In order to address this gap, undergraduate and graduate preparation programs need to be able to effectively attract, retain, and graduate clinicians that represent greater diversity. The academic resilience framework suggests that by learning about how students who are at-risk for failure were able to succeed, we can learn about how to improve the outcome for similar students. In this qualitative study, 11 African American speech-language pathologists were interviewed …
